Title: Unicomp has Multi-Wide keys now!
Post by: Snowdog993 on Fri, 20 March 2015, 23:09:42
I just noticed that Unicomp has multi-wide keys available!

I know a lot of people were needing/looking for them.

Looks like they have the home row indiactors for dovorak as well as qwerty listed right in the drop down menu.  The only thing I would need now is a single unit numpad 0 key for my AT.  The number row numbers look kind of funny in the numpad area, but at least they all match.  I suppose I could get a letter O instead of a number 0.  But that would probably bug me as well because it wouldn't have the correct bottom legend.

You can.  Go here.

I believe you want a Pearl (white) 0 key.
So you put in the characters.  0/ins (numpad 1u) for the description.

I had no trouble ordering a 1u + key from them.  I am pretty sure they can do a 1u 0 (numpad) for you.

Edit: I had to show what I was talking about there....  ;)

Yes, Unicomp will print custom 1x key all day long.  I am glad they now have multiwide keys available, already placed an order for some keys.  But - they won't yet custom print multiwide keys.

Excellent news!  And about time too!

Unfortunately shipping is ludicrous.  Are they serious?

It didn't even cost that much to get an SSK shipped to me from the US!

They can print custom anything, but sometimes you need to prompt them. They have done a key which says HDD and then SSD underneath for a 1x key for me. But it took a bit of back and forth i.e.. they said they couldn't do it and I said that I heard they could and described the printing process that someone posted somewhere. I was nice of course and played the dumb card a bit stating that I must have heard wrong. Well they ended up doing the cap for me and sending me all the alternate caps that I had specified in case they couldn't.

I bet they would do custom printed multi wide keys, if you asked and poked them a bit. But in saying that I bet they would do it for one person and then not do it for another just to keep it random. Its not random unless its Unicomp random.

I have asked three separate times on three different orders for some custom multi-wide keys (a 1.5x shift and a 1.3x function [interestingly enough Unicomp calls their 1.25x keys, 1.3x]); they refuse.  I know wcass was able to get some custom 1.3x keys printed for his XTant.

You got an SSK shipped to AUS for less than $24? Whoever sent it lost at least $20 on shipping.

This is great!
Now if they could only make a large white spacebar.

No, no, no, I was referring to the $70 or so shipping.  That seems excessive for a couple of keycaps.

They have the $23 option, at least. I heard someone mention once that they got in contact with Unicomp and got them to do a cheaper shipping option. I did a Unicomp order the other day and made sure to get everything I wanted (and picked up a couple of things for someone else) because paying $23US for shipping any time I want a couple of caps would be absurd.

The mwide availability could not have come at a better time for me, though. Last week I accidentally broke one of my Ctrl caps so it's good to be able to replace it like this.

Unicomp is good about working with you.

My experience is that a small number of keys are shipped in a small bubble envelope, but more than a dozen or so go in a small flat rate box via US Post Office.

That flat rate postage is about $6 domestic and about $24 international, and will hold a complete set including spacebar.

I'd be worried about the stem breaking or being squashed if they weren't packaged very well, especially on a journey to Australia.
