Title: Which Topre silencing mod?
Post by: Ludovician on Sun, 22 March 2015, 05:30:10
Hi, a while ago I was looking into doing one of the various silencing mods on my HHKB, but as I now have a Type-S, it isn't really necessary. However, since I still have my regular HHKB, I was thinking of doing one for the experience, and to compare between that and the Type-S.

Does anyone know the pros and cons of the various methods of silencing?

Dental bands
o2dazone's method
spiceBar's method
Type-S (Are these just dental-banded with longer stems?)

I already have a spiceBar modded Realforce which I love, but I'd need to find a way to source appropriate material locally because EK isn't an option for me. Thinking I might try o2dazone's method for it.

How's that m0116 serving you ;)

I dental banded my hhkb and the travel distance is reduced quite a bit. I'd say that's the only con, and the pro of course is reduced noise. You get used to it though after using it for a while and changing back to a regular hhkb the difference is like night and day. If I were to do it again I'd most likely use o2dazone's method for a not so reduced travel distance.

Haha, the m0116 is fine. I don't think I could use it as a daily driver because of the layout. I just wanted to sample Alps switches.

Yeah, I'll have an opportunity to compare the dental-banded HHKB with a stock one soon, when it gets to my turn in Jersern's HHKB tour. I think that will be next week sometime.

Dental bands seem to be the easiest method by far, but with the most travel reduction. I'd be interested in figuring out the differences between o2dazone's and spiceBar's, though. I've only skimmed through the threads, but it seems to me that the main difference is the material used. o2dazone uses rubber and spiceBar uses foam, IIRC. I suppose the amount of travel reduction depends on how thin you can get the foam in spiceBar's mod.

I have performed spiceBar's method with excellent results, on a HHKB and Novatouch. No change in travel or loss of tactility. I did modify it a bit, by trimming the ironed pad on the corners with a fingernail clipper after it is on the slider. I did this because I was noticing that sometime the slider would bind in the housing a bit. After trimming I made sure each slider could move freely.
