Title: Planck PCB
Post by: JalfResi on Tue, 24 March 2015, 15:14:58
Hi Everybody!

This is my first post, so please be gentle!

I've been interested in building a mechanical keyboard for myself for a very long time and have only recently started to look around for options. Originally I was going to settle on a Phantom as my first, as the PCB is pretty easy to get hold of (that is, a website called mechanicalkeyboards.com sells one) and there are plenty of instructional videos out and guides there. I've watched a few and even though I haven't soldered anything since school, I reckon I could handle that.

However.

I've been lurking on /r/mechanicalkeyboards and came across the Planck. I'm smitten. Exactly the sort of thing I'm after; portable, unique and different enough to make taking the plunge worthwhile!

I'm out of the loop in regards to this keyboard but I believe that there is a PCB design out there which utilises surface mounted diodes and mircoecontroller.

So my question is this:

- Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase the PCB (or a complete kit)?
- If so, where might I find that?
- If not, I think the PCB designs are in the Github project. Can anyone recommend a company who might be able to manufacture a one off of the PCB for myself?
- And to throw a spanner in the works; I'm in the UK, so any help with these questions and my locality (to keep postage costs low) would be marvellous!

Anyways, thanks for keeping a very informative and lively community! Can't wait until I'm part of the gang!

Cheers!
Ben

Hi there.

First off I think what you're asking is something that's been buzzing about for awhile with varying amounts of input I would not know that much about current PCB gerber files in the Github repos, but I think just by looking at the information, guides and resources currently on the plank website it would not be such  a large stretch to create your own.

Though that being said I wouldn't mind helping seeing as I was looking into making one myself. As for the PCB manufacturing there are a number of UK based board houses that are capable of supplying boards of that size.

I you want some assistance I'd love to to help just send me a PM and maybe we could get something started (also in the UK).

1 and 2) http://ortholinearkeyboards.com/ and http://planckkeyboard.com/
3) PCBWing and OSHPark come to mind
4) I don't know anything about postages to the UK. Sorry.
