Title: Have any of you (who write in different languages) experienced this?
Post by: berserkfan on Thu, 26 March 2015, 12:57:28

I just thought of it because I received a gift (payment) from TP. And saw that he literally had Crazy as his middle name.*

But TP isn’t nuts. At least, his Chinese handwriting really looks cultured/ civilized and not at all like the scrawls of a lunatic. [Whatever TP chooses to type in English is a different matter.]

Then I had to write a message to remind family members. So I hastily wrote something in Chinese. And it occurred to me that my Chinese handwriting has substantially improved since my teens. Something I write quickly looks good.

Even while my English handwriting, formerly praised by teachers back in the days when penmanship was still highly regarded has become atrocious. I can’t hand-write English well now without making mental effort.

So is it possible that while typing too much can cause your handwriting to deteriorate, maybe it only affects the language that you type in?

I think I should address my question mainly to people like Iri, Mougrim, Hasu and Moz who might be routinely hand-writing in a different alphabet from the one that they type in. We also have Turkish members who might occasionally write Arabic but not use it enough to bother installing Arabic language support, etc.

*Or at least a homonym for it, in my language.

The topic should read as (who writes using different alphabets) to be clearer. I write in English, Spanish and French, that are different languages, but use mostly the same alphabet.

I'm white American. But I write/type in Chinese. If I only type in Chinese, my writing gets really really bad. Is that what you are talking about?

It's not about writing skills, it's about penmanship (handwriting skills).

That's what he means, I'm pretty sure. Us Americans are lazy with our language. XD

If you have access to scientific journals, there's been quite some research on the topic, in regards to both typing/handwriting and various languages. I haven't read much about it yet though, because it has a lower priority for me.
