I'm thinking about picking up some bookshelf speakers for my computer. Is some kind of amplifier the only way to hook it up? I've done some research and found some videos. Is this a good idea?

YES... you also need a DAC if it's just an amp
so you need... Computer -- Optical Toslink -- DAC -- AMP -- Speakers
The reason you want toslink for computer audio, is because computers are noisy, especially when you have a high powered graphics card...
Sometimes,, the DAC and AMP are all in one device.. for example, the home theater receivers.. it has everything you need all in one.

Well it depends.
Are these self powered? Will you be using a sub? Does your computer have a descent sound card built in? And how many speakers?

DO NO buy self powered speakers.. JUST DON"T DO IT.. they're awful..
Even if they're "GOOD" , that's only happens above the $500 range..
Which isn't really worth it..

I know of a few that are not bad. But then again they are not considere bookshelf speakers. More like monitors.

OK I'll be a bit more specific. I'm looking at

(forgive links)
I'm currently hook to a stereo system with a special speaker cord which I wish not to use for just a computer and looking for a replacement. I find $35-$50 computer speakers are probably not as good as these.
Thanks

I have read many great reviews of these Micca speakers from many different sources. They would work with the amp you have shown. You may be better off buying a used receiver off Craigslist though.

Don't bother with the lepai unless ur gonna mod it up. You'll still need a dlc on top of the lepai.
Its easier to get something like the bs22 $60 pair, or fs52 $120 pair.(on sale)
Then get a stereo receiver. The big boxy things that usually go in front of TVs. They're way better quality than the lepai. And u don't need another DAC.

I currently use a complete stereo system and receiver and it feels like overkill for just computer speakers :|

it's not..
Using a sound card was enough back in the day.
but TODAY, gpu and cpus use so much Juice, that crosstalk and interference is next to impossible to isolate..
The only way is to use optical between the PC and a receiver..
