Keycap Crafting Project

First time here?  A little about myself and this project....

Main reason I make these?  I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY AND ALL YOU GUYS!!  It is great to contribute to it in my own way.

I started crafting keys in March 2015.  First thing to know is that I am a one man outfit, and this makes my keys a little hard to come by.  This is something I am trying to fix... but I can be a bit of a perfectionist, and would rather scrap a key with a minor defect than ever sell it to the community.  The members that look for these things have a quite discerning eye,  and want quality caps to collect and display on their boards.  I am this way myself!  So if I wouldn't be happy with a key on my board, I wouldn't sell it.

I have spent a LOT of time selecting the best possible materials as far as resins and molds.  Through trial and error I have come to what I believe is the best materials for a given key.  This was expensive to say the least, but I really think it was worth it.  This way you get a really high quality key that will last forever, and I can be proud of making.  For instance, one single key depending on the mold can take me up to 16 hours just to cast.  After casting I do finish work to make sure the key looks tip top before I can sell them.  This involves a lot more work, but I want to be proud of my productions so that anyone who gets one will wonder where it came from and come find me.

I am known for producing some really funky caps.. this is because I might come up with an idea and need to see it through.  Most of these I do not mass produce because they are so unorthodox.  An example would be my campfire key, flux keypacitor, space race, angry face, and more.  But if someone expresses an interest in a key,  that is when I will make a few of them and put on a sale or giveaway.  I do this as a hobby,  and not as a reliable source of income, so my sales and giveaways are few and far between.  But if you watch this thread you are sure to get every update.

FAQ:

Q:Why are you in "Making Stuff Together" instead of the Artisan forum?[
A: I have a thread there too but it is mainly now for sales.

Q: You said you spend a lot on this, why don't you do more sales?
A: As I said earlier, this is more of a hobby than something I can do full time.  I really love making caps, but with other stuff on my plate it takes a back seat from time to time.  If I ever start going into full time you all will be the first to know.  I also really value input so if  you see something you like, tell me!

Q: How can I buy one of your keycaps?
A: The best way is to watch this thread regularly.  Because we are in this forum you have a bit more time to respond and can get a key you will likely want.  If I do small sales / giveaways here and I don't have enough traffic to my thread to get rid of them all,  I may consider doing my future sales in the Artisan forum.  But as I said, right now it is more of a collaboration with the community here and trying to get myself a good reputation as a crafter.  I also run a loyalty program called "lootscore" so the more you do business with me the better chance  you have of grabbing something you would want.

Q: I have a question about one of your earlier keys,  and want to buy one, but will it ever go on sale again?
A: Best thing to do is post on this thread.  I would prefer that to private messages,  and if someone is really interested in a cap and I still have the mold I can certainly do my best to accomodate.

Q: What are your most popular keys?
A:  Right now people seem to really like the simplicity of my "Ice Cube" which is a semi transparent key with a nice texture and lights really well on LED boards.  I am now making them in different colors but mostly blue and clear.  My other most popular has been my "Äbductor" keys which are the alien head ones with the bumps on the sides.  Feel free to scan this thread and you will see almost every prototype I have come up with, most of which I still have the molds for.

Welcome to LOOTKEYS and enjoy your stay!

Wow, pretty amazing for just starting out. Are you using pressure, vac, or both?  Seems bubble free.

I'm loving the dude in the second pic.

Thanks... I am using vacuum degassing with a little pump I got and a chamber I made using air tool parts and a cookie jar with a seal...  I just got a pressure tank that is normally used for painting houses but I made it into a pressure chamber because what I am using now is a product that should use pressurization.

Thanks for the kind words, I am trying new designs and working on getting the keys looking as good as I can.

When you said you like the dude in the second pic do you mean the multi-color alien or the biggie smalls key? hehe

I thought the alien looked huge but biggie definitely wins that contest!  Is the alien designed to go with tall SA caps or does it just look tall because of the angle?  I like it anyway :)

I'm also intrigued what the burgundy and green ones next to biggie are, especially the green one with spots?

Keep up the good work!

Post by: whizzard on Sat, 11 April 2015, 01:31:16
Thank you!  It was not designed to go with any specific type of cap, I just happen to have the Deep Space on the keyboard it has been living on.

The one you are talking about in the pic with the spots was one of my first sculpts, I liked it as well but thought it may be too simple for most people, but it does have a kinda cool look so maybe I will work on it again.

I am going to post works in progress a bit more just for fun and feedback... I have been just doing this in my spare time and was too lazy to post about it :P

So what I am working on right now is my shield key.  It is a sculpt that I have been working on lately, and the reason I wanted to make it was because with all the zombies, skulls, killer robots and whatnot on our keyboards... I thought it would be nice to  have something positive to protect ourselves with!  What better than a shield with a cross on it?

Anyhow, the pic in the first post was the inside part and I just finished with the outside of it.  This part will be cast, centered, and hopefully finished.  This kinda shows my design process.  Sometimes I make one part and build on that.  I am also going to use silver for the shield part with a red or white cross.  Anyhow, this is where it is for now ready to be cast and fixed up hopefully tonight or tomorrow.

Next step:

This is the cast of the outer part of the key.  Next step is to modify and carve this to look more sharp and detailed.... getting closer to the final product.  Very bright white, made the pic not easy to see, but just a potato to show progress.

Carved the shield a bit, also working on making some "face keys" as I call them.  This one will be scrapped but I learned some good stuff working on it.  Still really enjoying crafting these.  Of course, these are just tests, and are not cleaned up.

I have gotten the "Abductor" alien style key finished and decided to use the first post in the thread to update my finished designs.  Now I am working on the key that looks like the grimacing face.  I am still not 100 percent happy with the shield key and I am going to modify the symbol on the front a bit more as well before considering that one finished.  But these two are definitely going to be key numbers 2 and 3.  I am trying to keep things numbered because it makes them fun to collect if there ends up being an interest in them... as well as a way to check the names and design types.  As long as I keep having fun making them I might end up with a lot of different and unique key designs, and that will help me keep track of them all.

I had a strange idea of making a campfire key... you know little logs with a flame on it, only transparent in the middle so it lights up from a LED.  Might be a bit too intricate but when I start a new design I might give it a shot anyhow!

Hahahha!!  Yes, very angry key.

I have a new process that makes the eyes and mouth completely transparent,  I really like the way it looks on a lit up keyboard.  This is a blurry phone potato pic but I have a lot of pics of keys to take with my good camera later.  This is the latest thing that I have learned how to do, basically a 3 shot,  a few pupils + base + transparency.

I am very excited today because after testing quite a few different materials I have found what I will make all my caps out of from now on.  It has only one drawback, it takes a long time and multiple steps to get it right.  But because I would rather make a small amount of really quality caps instead of a ton of mediocre ones, I am going to stick with this material.  It is very strong, dense, and tough... even with the small thickness of most keycap walls.  I was pretty amazed when I finally took it out of the mold and I couldn't tell the difference between this cap and a standard injection molded one from a factory.

I will post a bunch of pics of all the caps I made using various materials later.  I really feel like I am starting to make quality progress with this project.  :thumb:

Most of the good artisan keycap makers seem to make a small quantity of very high quality keycaps, so you must be on the right road!

Thanks for the encouragement!   It is nice to hear, this is a tough hobby.. but really fun and addictive once you get into it.  I am working on it a little every day even though I don't post in this thread often.  Really fun to do these.  So I am posting a bunch of prototypes of a few designs.  They are made with different materials and colors as well as different attempts at trying new things.

Abductor Keys:

Angrys:

I made some with translucent eyes and teeth so it looks cool on a LED lit switch.  They came out OK but are hard to capture in a photograph properly ... :

This is just a clear keycap that I call an icecube.. I like it as my FN key... :

(http://www.adamfalwell.com/projects/lootkeys/icecube1.jpg) (http://www.adamfalwell.com/projects/lootkeys/icecube2.jpg)

And yes... I am strange enough to make a campfire key.. I have no idea why I had the desire to make this, but it was fun!  Also looks better in person, this photo didn't get the detail on the logs, so it looks like a flaming pile of dog crap in this pic LOL ... but the firey translucent flame part came out well.  The white granite base is a new effect I have just learned how to do.

Through all this I am getting better and better at working with the materials to get the look I want, and the right material to use.  As I said in my last post, I have a great strong material that I am using from now on.  I am going to work on some new sculpts and possibly a new tool for switches next.  Really enjoying this project!  I also have a new idea to make the base for the "Abductor" alien key that will be black with white dots (to look like space).  Anyhow, thanks geek hackers, I will update again soon!

I have a background in 3D modeling, and plan to eventually add a 3D printer that can make micron size designs in the future.

I could help out with that, depending on where you're located.

What kind of machine do you have?  I am planning on getting a stereo-lithographic unit because they have really good resolution and I can make my prototype with it, then use conventional methods to copy it.

Just an update... I now have found a really nice method for casting clear "icecube" caps.  I am also going to do a giveaway soon of a bunch of caps, so stay tuned for that!  I was thinking of giving some of my test keys away, but I want to give you guys the result of all my testing and madness by using the method and material that I prefer for rigidity and quality.

The giveaway will be "Abductor" keys as well as the clear "Ice Cube" keys as well as my newest sculpt that I am very excited about.  I have 3 different "Ice Cube" molds for both DSA, DCS, and another custom size.  If anyone is interested in any of the more esoteric and strange keys I have made (flux keypacitor, madface, campfire) just let me know on this thread and I will include a few of those too.

Thanks for your feedback and thanks for stopping in!

I was lucky enough to receive some keycaps from whizzard. They are awesome. Here's a quick write up of the keys.

Abductor:
This key is really fun. The colors are great and visually it's great. I noticed that the plastic is quite soft, I'm able to squeeze my thumb and forefinger and the sides of the keycaps bend. Still, for a tri-colored cap it's amazing.

Alienssssssss
(http://i.cubeupload.com/c3jY5q.jpg)

Angry face:
One of my all-time favorites! The style and the expression is funny/scary/crazy, and I love how they look on a board! They are all triple cast, which just boggles my mind. For an artisan just starting out, this is indeed quite an accomplishment and I can't wait to see what you'll come up with next!

So rad on my keyboard:

It glowssss:

NEW keycap, I like to call it the Punisher, heh
This one is really fun, similar in style to the Abductor key. It too is triple cast and unlike the Abductor key the plastic is firm and the black and white color is really solid. Viewed from the top, this key looks really neat.

Ice Cube:
My other favorite of whizzard's creations. Simple, clean, beautiful. It has a permanent place on my SPRiT 60% board. Whizzard was generous enough to send me a few of these, I can see the growth and experimentation of his craft in them. The first couple of ice cubes are a bit soft, the second batch better, and the third batch is solid. I do like the diffused glow of the second, harder plastic better than the third batch, however the 3rd batch in terms of keycap feeling and smoothness is awesome. Whizzard if you're reading this, I'd really like to know which resisn/plastics you ended up using for your respective batches. I'm looking into making some teal/aqua topre keycaps for my HHKB and I think you've basically got a solid formula here with these Ice Cubes. :thumb:

I want to thank retrochick for her generosity in posting such an extensive review of the samples I sent!  Seeing that really makes me proud of the work I have put into this project.

As far as the keys reviewed,  the final material that I am using for the keys (other than ice cubes) is the one used in the "Punisher" style key.  As stated it is very solid and has a great feel.  The casting time however is much longer as it takes a day or so for each key to be made, but it is worth it for the quality of the final product in my opinion.  So for new keys and the upcoming giveaway I will be sending out only keys made with that material.

As far as the ice cubes,  I tested 3 different types of resin for those.  One was called "Crystal Clear" with a 24 hour set time, and it came out fairly solid but with a bit more of an amber tone to it.  The other one was cast with "Epoxacast 690" and that came out similar to the "Crystal Clear" with a bit of an amber tone.  I ended up preferring the last material I used called "Color Pro Clear" which gave that pure white ice cubish color.  That is what I am planning to use as the material for the clear ice cube caps... because it looks very clear and is very solid when finished.  The work time is short, but keeping any bubbles or stains out of the final key is a challenge.  Unless retro gives me an argument the other way I am going to stick with that.

As far as the project goes it will slow for this week as I  have a lot of CG work I need to get done, but once I have made about 15-20 quality keys of different types using the material I have decided as the best quality I will do the giveaway.  I want to send out the final product and what you can expect from my keys in the giveaway.  They take a while to make but getting the feedback will be worth it.  I sent retro the "Punisher" key in the final material along with some beta test keys and ice cubes.

Anyhow thanks again retro for your work and all of you posting the kind words here... it really makes me want to push on with this hobby!

I wonder if you'd consider doing a WASD set of the Ice Cubes? I guess its kinda hard since wasd sets aren't a uniform profile etc.

I wonder if you'd consider doing a WASD set of the Ice Cubes? I guess its kinda hard since wasd sets aren't a uniform profile etc.

That is a pretty good idea.  I could do that, not as hard as you might think.  I would probably go with the OEM profile... 3 keys (ASD) of row 3, the W row 2... and then the one that I already have for the "esc" key that normally comes with WASD gamer sets (row 1).

I am surprised at the demand for the ice cubes.  It makes sense though... the clean and polished look is popular, and as much as we like collecting the artisan novelties... not all of them get a place on our everyday keyboards it seems.

The ice cubes are both easier and harder for me to craft.  On one hand I can make them in a shorter time than the other artisans, but making sure they are perfectly clear and free of bubbles or defects can be a trouble.  Rest assured though, I am not afraid of adding to my giant jar of tests and duds.  Must be 100 keys or more in there.

Luckily, since keycaps are so small, you can afford a lot of trial and error without breaking the bank.

On another subject... I am going to stick with the lineup of keys I have made so far until I get my SLA 3d printer.  Since I work with 3D artist programs all the time it will greatly open up my creative avenues.  A mixture of 3D printing and conventional sculpting will hopefully enable me to make some really neat keys.  3D is much like sculpting with a computer, but this project has taught me a ton about the basics of physical sculpture and I have grown to enjoy it.

Because sculpting can take so long for me on each key,  I am going to go into more of a production mode and build an inventory for the giveaway that I am hoping to do very soon.  So stay tuned folks!  And thanks again for the encouragement.  Every positive comment makes me want to keep at it more and more.

Yeah at lot of people like blanks and other artisans whose shapes don't deviate from the general shape of a keycap too much, because you can retain the clean look of a board while adding some colour. That being said, I don't mind having a funky designed key as an esc key, because it's pretty segregated from the rest.

Looking forward to what you can do with a 3d printer!

These look really cool.  I'm a fan of the "punisher" in particular.

Not to be a creep but  just noticed you are in Boston. Me also! Is there some local meetup that I could go to once in a while?

Not to be a creep but  just noticed you are in Boston. Me also! Is there some local meetup that I could go to once in a while?

Not that I know of, let me know if you find something!  I am not right in Boston, about 45 min from the city.

Also, I wanted to give everyone a quick update on my project.  I am sorry the giveaway is taking so long for me to get going..  I don't mean to be a tease!  I got my SLA 3D printer last week and I have been tinkering with it a lot in my spare time.  The good news is that it will be a great tool for me as an artist to make the keys even better.

For the upcoming giveaway I am planning on doing Punishers, Abductors, and Cubes.  I was wondering if you guys would rather have one standard color scheme for the Punishers and Abductors or would you rather have a bunch of different colors.  I want everyone to get a key they will like, just not sure if I should keep them all looking the same or make a big variety.  For example a purple abductor head with green eyes and a black base?  A Punisher with a Blue face Orange eyes , ect.

I am planning on making around 15 keys for the giveaway.  If there is a higher demand, I am going to do something fun!  I have some geeky 20 sided dice and I will have you "roll" for your keys kinda like a MMO or something if there are too many requests for keys in the giveaway.  I will start an email just for the giveaway and allow people to enter for a day or two, because I want people to have a chance at a key even if they don't always have time to search the forums like some of us.

Let me know what you guys think about the colors being standard and the same or wide variety.

As long as there are some red/green abductors!

It might be fun to mix and match, but perhaps only 2-3 types of each in order to make them unique, rather than a bunch of colors for the sake of simplicity?

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to trying my luck!

Hey guys... just providing an update.  I added Punisher to the official keys index at the top of the thread... the picture came out a little blurry so I will re-take it at some point.

Giveaway news:

The giveaway is right around the corner,  I only have a few more keys to produce to be completely ready for it.  I hope you will all be happy with what you get if your in on it.  All I ask is that for the free key shipped to you is that you give me some feedback and/or post pics on this thread of the key.  I have some unique ideas about how this will all work that should make it more fun to get these and collect them, even if they aren't on your everyday board.  And keep in mind this giveaway is a sort-of beta run for future keys and sales so lets hope it goes smoothly.  I also have a new 3D printer that will make things very interesting for this projects future!

Please keep an eye on this thread, the giveaway will probably be within the next 7-10 days!  Thanks everyone!

Just wanted to chime in and say that I whizzard's caps are awesome, esp. the ice cubes. Thanks for the reply by the way - it was really informative! I considered making my own, but you know, there's also the thing called time that I never seem to have enough of. Anyway, you should look into making some colored ice cubes - maybe an awesome trans blue or CMY set?! I'm totally into blanks right now. Keep up the good work!

More
LOOTKEYS FIRST GIVEAWAY DETAILS

The giveaway is going to be a beta test for possible future key sales.  It should give me an idea for demand as well as the process of running a sale.  While not a requirement, I would really appreciate pictures of the keys or a fast review on this thread if you do get a free giveaway key.

The keys are nearly completed and I am just waiting for a few packing materials, so my cost is lower and the presentation is nice.  I want it to be fun even just opening your loot, and add some little details that make it more interesting.  I also want these to be as fun to collect and trade as they are to put on a keyboard.  I am going to try a system that makes sales and giveaways more fair for those who don't get what they want, and rewards everyone for being involved! (more on this below)

HOW IT WILL WORK:

I will post in the subject of this thread when the giveaway is actually on.  An email address to send a message to as well as instructions just like most key sales will be provided.  If you mark this thread as watched/notify I will also make sure I post so that members can get notified of the new activity.  I will ask for your geekhack account name as well as your address.  I am footing the bill for shipping so I will not need paypal accounts this time around but will use paypal in the future when I do key sales.  If you are not located in the USA or Canada, I may need your paypal to cover the extra cost of shipping.  I will figure that part out by the start of the event.  I will put the email and instructions for entry in the top post of this thread here in "MST" when I begin the giveaway.

LETS MAKE IT INTERESTING:

I want everyone who may want a key to get a chance at winning.  Instead of having a countdown and cutoff, I am going to take all the entries for a few days and I will determine the winners by doing a roll off.  The roll off will be a dice roll for each eligible member of two twenty-sided dice.  If I only get a few entries, those few will still roll against each other.  40 being the highest score of course.

When the sale starts I will post a picture with the keys avaliable numbered in the photo.  In your message to me you will put the keycap number that you want the most, and I will do my best to give you that one.  The person with the highest roll in the giveaway will win both their preferred keycap as well as a one-per-sale and one of a kind golden keycap!  The worst roll will get a special "donkey" prize of the key they won as well as a unique strange keycap.  Each sale and giveaway I will include these exclusive keys.

I will also include a message in the shipment of what you rolled for all winners.  This will add some fun and excitement to entering.  The higher you roll, the better chance you have of getting the key you choose.  But as usual, if the key you wanted was won by someone that rolled higher than you, you will get a similar or possibly completely different key.  I will do my best to determine what you may want most.  If you had bad luck, you will get a bonus on the next sale/giveaway.  The method for this will be clear after the giveaway.

The idea of the lottery was to give people a bit of more of a fair chance, and reminds me of rolling for "loot" in online games and lottery contests.  Just stuff I always think is fun.  I hope everyone who gets a key enjoys it, and sees the large amount of effort I put into getting the keycaps to where they are now... and I promise you they will even better.  I have a few extra tools that I didn't when I designed these that will make them even more unique.  Nevertheless, I am proud of the caps I have created thus far.  Plus they are totally free this time so be nice :)

Keep an eye out this week (hopefully), it only depends on when I get the packing materials I still need.  Then the giveaway will kick off.

Lastly I want to say thank you to all of the supporters of my little project.  I would not have gotten this far and had the motivation to do so without it.  Also thanks to the GH community and operators for giving us a place to enjoy this niche hobby.

GOOD LUCK :)

-whizzard

Can't wait!

Nice idea for the mechanics of the giveaway as well.

For some reason I haven't checked this thread for a while - I've missed a lot!  That highlighter orange Abductor is awesome.

As long as you stay hidden away in MST you should be fine with your selection method as many people don't come in here, but if you go outside you might find yourself rolling dice all day.  Just a friendly warning :))

Yeah, I was thinking that... I am thinking this giveaway will give me an idea of what I am getting myself into.  Right now the lottery seems like a lot of fun to me, lets hope it doesn't become a chore :) I just hope everyone who wins is happy with their keycap.

Who doesn't like rolling a couple d20s around!  Sounds like a cool idea.

Good news,  tracking says I will have the last of the packing stuff I need for the giveaway so it will be sooner rather than later.  I still need to go over the new keys I made for the giveaway and clean them up and smooth them a bit more and thats it!  I am excited to get these out into the world and hope plenty of you want them :)

Other good news is I have gotten the 3D SLA printer I got working pretty well... just a few more small bugs to work out and I can start using zbrush to help model keys.  I am going to use both 3D and sculpting putty for future designs because I have gotten a bit attached to the physical sculpture.

More updates soon!

Hey everyone, just a little update.  The winners have .. well... won.  Right now I just need to get estimates on international shipping and contact those from outside USA that won a key.  Once everything is set I will let everyone know.  I don't want to send out keys until I know everyone is good with shipping fees and all that just in case it changes who gets what.  I think most of you will be happy.  I was interested to see what keys were chosen the most,  it will help me in figuring out what to cast more of next time.

In other news, my new 3D printer had a part break.  And this after I spent a good part of two days modeling my newest design idea.  All I needed was one print so I could hit it with some clay and putty detailing and make the prototype... but isn't that how it goes sometimes.  So I am waiting to  hear from the company so I can send it out for a warranty repair.  I am going to try making the same design using standard sculpture though.  It is pretty neat, it is modeled after a 1960s-70's Russian Cosmonaut helmet.

Anyhow... I will get the invoices out to the international winners within the next day or so, hoping to ship everything by next Monday.  Shouldn't be too much to ship, like 7-10 dollars or so each due to the small light package.  I will update soon.

I would let you know what you won, but it actually depends on if everyone that is international decides they want a key.  If you wanted an ice cube, I am trying to get them to everyone international that picked one.. because I have a few of each I should have plenty but just to be sure.  If you picked Abductor, Punisher, Angry, then I can't garauntee you will get that exact key .. but as I said I am doing my best to get everyone what they wanted.  If you get the key and are completely unhappy with it, I will refund the shipping fee.

I want everyone to be happy, but it isn't always possible.  But I am going to do my best  :D

**edit:  Just for clarity... I already have everyone's rankings and roll scores figured out, but if an INT winner drops out, it will change it all up.

Highest roll was a 34... and the invoices were not sent out in winning order, just the order of my inbox from the giveaway.  There were also 3 ties, and I had to do tiebreaker roll offs.  Lowest roll was a 5, and wins the weird donkey key.  ;)

*edit: in the future, I think I will keep track and if someone ties, just re-roll.

You guys are quick!  Already have half the invoices paid.

Just a note on INT shipping... the amount I sent was made using a shipping calculator and the estimate of 5oz. If the shipping goes any lower I will refund everyone the difference.  If it goes higher don't worry about it.

Thanks everyone, I am really happy to see all your excitement!  I hope the keys live up to it :)

Just as a reminder, I am using the shipping address you sent me in the entry email and not your paypal registered addresses.  Everyone sent their addresses in the mail so it shouldn't be a problem but I want to be clear.

Unless we discussed a change in shipping or whatever, as long as you put the right address in your entry email, everything should go smoothly.  And I am glad so many of you are in on the ground floor of this little project, and if for any reason you aren't happy with what you get.. send me a PM when you get it and I will do what I can to make ya happy.  I called it an "ALPHA" giveaway because it is my first foray into this sort of thing but it seems to be going pretty smoothly.  Hopefully I don't mess much up  :p

Most invoices are already paid, and I will start putting together the packages tonight.  I am hoping to send them all out to the world on Monday.   I will keep ya all updated.

So I got invoice number 003 and insta-paid, temence was before me and I guess there are at least a couple of Americans up there...  Did anyone score a perfect 40?

Highest roll was a 34... and the invoices were not sent out in winning order, just the order of my inbox from the giveaway.  There were also 3 ties, and I had to do tiebreaker roll offs.  Lowest roll was a 5, and wins the weird donkey key.  ;)

*edit: in the future, I think I will keep track and if someone ties, just re-roll.

Interesting - quite a good spread of numbers!  I'm really looking forward to seeing the donkey key, but hopefully not in my package :))

I deleted the giveaway pic when I cleared out the top post.  In case anyone was curious or trying to remember what they requested, here it is:

*edit: interesting note:  The top key picked other than ice cubes was "H" the green/purple abductor

So the ice cubes were the most picked?  That surprises me, but now you know what the people want :)

Those were my third and second choices respectively - hopefully that means no-one else wanted the awesome orange Abductor!  Why did I go for an ice cube over the orange Angry though?!

Lol the donkey key is just as I said it would be... random, strange and esoteric.  I think it is funny how people are rooting to have the low roll just for it.

Now to an update.  Since the OEM style of ice cubes were coveted in the giveaway, (even though I think the high profile are cool too) I might craft a couple extra just so every winner who picked either "O" or "P" as their first or second choice will get what they want.  Unless they give me problems (they have before.. hard to get them with no errors) it shouldn't delay things and I can have them ready for shipping Monday.  If it does I will let you all know.

Reason I want to do this is to make more of ya happy... I don't see why this should be an issue.  Even if it takes a day or two longer, I think it is worth it for everyone to get what they asked for.

Good news is after I figured out who gets what, 95 percent of ya got either your first or second pick.

Good news, the molds for the few extra ice cubes is coming out great!  (I forgot the other molds broke due to a mistake of mine so I needed a new one)... I wouldn't be able to do this for the Abductor, Punisher, Angrys, because those keys take over 24 hours "in the oven" as I think of it, plus each key takes at least a half hour of finish work.  Luckily, the ice cubes are pretty fast and is more of getting the formula right to get a good key.

So we are still on schedule.

Yea the double / tripleshot keys are a real labor of love, takes a lot of time and you can waste an entire day on a key that duds out.  The ice cubes really come down to how fast I can work and make no mistakes, hard to explain but not quite as much time and difficulty.  Yeah, right now I am enjoying it, hope I continue to!  I just wish my 3D printer didn't break because I was going to make a really sweet key using that and some hand sculpting.

I RMA'd it should be a week or two to get it back fixed.

Love your work, they're all so cool, especially the angrys, and the fact that you're giving some away makes them that much cooler ;D I think another really cool thing you can do is add some stuff into the ice cubes like glitter (as you know it's all the rage rn) or maybe just a little bit a dye to make very subtlety dyed, trans caps

Thanks everyone for your positive words, it makes me feel more confident going forward.  It can be hard to share your work with strangers, especially here where quality is so important.  Putting out your personal art work can be a little stressful, but you all have been very kind and supportive.  This is still an "Alpha" project but it is moving right along.  Really fun little hobby to have.  I am casting the last few extra caps so most all of you should be happy with what you end up winning from the giveaway.

I have gotten a few messages asking about donating a couple bucks to the project... if you would like to donate, the paypal email is:

Anything donated will be folded back into the project itself.  This of course is completely optional, and any support is of course appreciated.  I have never taken a donation before, but I think just sending to that address should work.

I will let you know if there are any delays on shipping out the giveaway caps, thanks!

All keys are now off and away!!  I went a little overboard on the packaging and presentation, but I like when I get something that someone took pride in not just the item but the package it comes in.  If someone does an unboxing pictorial you will see what I mean.  :))

Delivery is First Class Mail / First Class International.  USA usually 4-7 days delivery time, International 5-10 days average I believe.  catdogpaw will probably get his first because he is only about a half hour from where I am.  This was a blast!  Lots of work, but fun anyhow.

I know when you get your stuff you guys will ask this so I will answer it ahead of time... what does "Lootscore" mean?  Lootscore is basically just extra points that you can use on future sales/giveaways.  I gave different amounts depending on how you did on this series.  If you got a great score, you got less bonus points for next time... if you got a terrible score, you got more points for next time.  I hope this system works out... keep in mind this was called "Alpha" for a reason.  It is hard enough making keys and putting on a sale / giveaway, I want to be careful not to make it too much work so I will continue enjoying doing this.

I REALLY HOPE YOU ALL LIKE YOUR CAPS!   :thumb:

This sound like a cool idea I hope it works out well.  It will be nice to have a chance to increase your number if there is a cap you really want.  Any chance of a full ice cube key set?

I don't think I could do a full set without going mad... it takes a while to do each key, and if it doesn't come out perfect or close to it, I dud the cap.

I can definitely consider doing an ice cube gamer set though if there is enough interest, like WASD and ESC.

Actually I made that cap... came out pretty good too!  Its exciting that these are all heading out across the country, even the world!  Hopefully this is just the beginning.  I will have to graduate to the artisan services forum and do sales next time so I can afford to keep crafting and sending out caps.

I am not going to be abandoning these designs, I like each of them... but I have some ideas for new designs that I think you will all really like.  Now I can start working on those.  I want to incorporate my mini 3D printer to help take things to the next level (just sent it out to be fixed).I also just got a new group buy keyboard that I want to throw together... so plenty of mech keyboard tasks to be done.  :thumb:

I'm in England in the UK which is what makes it so impressive - that package cut my previous speed record in half and I doubt it will ever happen again, but you never know!

Holy hell man... that fast to UK first class is absurd.  I have had to wait upwards of 2 weeks going the other way round getting something from UK "Royal Mail".  You Brits are so distinguished... even your mail is royal.  ;)

Thanks, whizzard! This is a very generous giveaway, and I am really impressed with the thought that went into the design and the packing. Also I really like how the green has a matte finish while the red is glossy. Looks incredible.

Thanks again for the kind words... I will have a sale not to very long from now I am sure.  I will build up a larger stock for the next one, and make plenty of cubes.  I had fun making the cards... gave me an excuse to use my typewriter and with the date created stamp (I forgot to type "created" on your card) gave it that old retro personal look.  16 was just about middle of the road... as far as the scoring went.  :D

I am hoping both the guy who won the 1st place gold key and the donkey post pics when they get their boxes,  they had a little bit of a different package.  The donkey key will always just be a random strange key that is a consolation for scoring lowest (not one that looks like an actual donkey, to be clear  ;) ).  If they don't post it I will let ya know what the donkey key was.

edit: oh yea and thank you so much for the pics!  really enjoying them!!  I also had a funny thought, right now a few of my little key dudes could be 30,000 feet in the air flying over the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.... godspeed little caps!

Wow. Sorry about that. Gonna resize the pics in the morning so they don't take a gajillion years to load.

On that note, I LOVE IT! Unfortunately the Leopold numpad is the only Cherry board I own but I plan on getting a KUL soon.

I am glad you are happy with your cap  :D

I always thought that one had really cool and striking colors ...  I spent a long time designing the angrys, my favorite thing about them is the "neck" that took a long time to carve and sculpt to seem organic.

Congrats, looking forward to them!

That means either I got higher than you (not likely) or I'm one of the unlucky 5% who didn't get one of their top two choices as H was my second :-X

I couldn't resist sending you one of my megaman caps when I saw your username  :p  I had a few printed up because I am also a fan...  you also picked the only glow key in the whole lot.

fliptrick's key looks good but the color bleed under his chin is driving me nuts!  Oh well, gives it some character I guess :)  matches that keycap scheme nicely as well.  Thanks for the snapshots guys!!  So cool  :thumb:

I'm a huge fan of megaman.  I am planning on making some caps that are based off of the games when I have the time/resources.    The glow key looks sweet.  I will add a photo of it glowing when I get home (no leds at work).

I'm proxying one of these for a Canuck.  The unboxing was an experience in itself.  I arranged all the packaging in one photo to show everything.  First the big box filled with confetti.  Then the small box.  Then the burlap bag.  Then the plastic bag.  Then the small clear plastic case.  Then the keycap.  Took half my evening just unpacking the keycap.

I was thinking about making a mini website for running sales and keeping track of everyones lootscores and open it up for sales when I have inventory... it would be so fun if I could run contests on it too where you guys can roll for a score yourselves ... just thinking out loud :)

I used to do web design and it can be fun when your working on something you like.

Just an update since I have been quiet on this project for a little bit.

I am working on my first 3D Printed / physical sclupted key.

I wanted to do a space helmet for a while, and while looking around this picture inspired me.  I think it is just great.  I am now making a "cosmonaut" key based on it.

Right now I am trying to figure out how I want to orient the key, as it could face up or forward.  I made two sides flat for the purpose of figuring out which way I wanted to go.  Right now I am leaning towards up.  I have 3D printed the following models and am VERY happy with how they look.  The next phase will be casting the prints and doing some physical cleanup and detail work as well as adding the stem.

If I can pull it off, I want the model with the face to be encapsulated in a clear resin that will represent the face shield.

Here is a quick crude render of the parts I have modeled and printed.  Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.  Stay tuned!

If I can't get the face shield to work, using the one with the face will not be as ergonomically pleasing as the straight helmet.

**oh yea, the eyes look creepy like that because it is easier to color with resin when they are cut in like that.

I've been stalking this thread for days, waiting for you to report in Whizzard.

First of all I want to say that I became a huge fan of your work after reading a review on RoastPotatoes (http://roastpotatoes.github.io/keycapspotlight/2015/07/30/keycap-spotlight-lootkeys-project/). The Sub Zero keycap is one of the most incredible novelties I've ever seen. It is absolutely spot on to what I've been looking for recently, a pure ice blue OEM profiled blank. I'm not sure you will ever replicate such keycap, but I'm going to join your next buy anyway because I just want to support your work. To me, this Sub Zero design is a piece of art, absolutely gorgeous. It is the missing piece on my board, which looks exactly like this (http://i.imgur.com/RkSFt1A.jpg).

I got very excited when I read about your work and your approach to the artisan market, it's a honor to have such a talented and passionate maker.

Regarding the Cosmonaut design, the closed helmet one is looking fantastic. A face shield dark enough to not show the face would be great, in my opinion, because I'm not a big fan of the detailed face with nose and mouth (even though they are very subtle). The encapsulated design is fantastic and if you somehow use the colors of the painting that you used as inspiration, it would look pretty good. The font you chose for the CCCP looks great too.

However, I'd like to see what you managed to make in the forward orientation, as I much prefer the "BroBot" orientation instead of the Krytone's Brainy Skull (http://i.imgur.com/QBRputG.jpg), for example.

Congratulations for your amazing work, the Sub Zero keycap is extraordinary. I love it and won't rest until I find one!

Thank you so much for your kind words!!  RoastPotatoes did a great write up and I really appreciate his effort and time put into writing it.  Very kind.  And do not worry about missing out on the Ice Cube keys.  Due to their popularity and because I like the way they come out as well, they will definitely be for sale again.  Just keep an eye on this thread and I am sure you will get one  :thumb:

I hear you on the orientation issue.  Basically I am going to make it both ways and see how it looks and feels in use before deciding on exactly which way to go.  The face also looks a little different when printed to a model than in the actual 3D model... I will post pics of those soon.  Either way I want to include the face-mask part, so that the key is not totally uncomfortable to press.

This is so amazing - esp your 3d model! It kind of reminds me of the helmets used in the movie Prometheus:

I think the orientation will be tricky, especially since the design allows for a large round surface, I can see your preference for it being oriented up. One suggestion is to try a third orientation and do it sort of 3/4 or 2/3 leaning, facing upwards, if that makes any sense. That way, you get the maximum surface area for the helmet, and perhaps you avoid the fitment issues.

I can't wait to see more pics of your progress. Awesome work as always, Whizzard  ;).

Yea retro, I actually tried the different orientations with some rough prototypes, and the straight up looks good.  Because of the slant of keyboards, it gets that little slant of a few degrees so it is not at a 90 degree angle.

I just have to do some putty work and sanding and I will have the final key (w/o face)

Sounds good :)

I just got back from vacation and I have to say that the key is great! Unfortunately, I can provide no pictures of mi Hi-profile Ice cube because my camera is ****ty, and I am still waiting for keyboard parts from Gon. The only thing lacking in my case is that the key is too "loose" and can be removed from the switch too easily. Other than than, I really like it! :)

HEY GUYS!!! I am really sorry for not taking a moment to post in a while.  I still have all my equipment and love making caps, I have just been SUPER busy with other projects the past few months.  Things have slowed since the summer and I will have more time to devote to the hobby.  Thanks to everyone for the support, and I am very happy some of you like my stuff.

I noticed that both the basic ice cube blue clears and the more drastic designs are popular with many of you, I was wondering what direction I should take when I start up again casting caps.  So post what you would be interested in buying and any ideas you may have for me and I might be able to go that direction.

And yes, I have finished the space helmet cap... my most complicated to date.  It is a loooooong process to make just one cap, so I am not sure it would be viable to sell.  I don't want to seem greedy.  The reason is it has multiple colors, and multiple casts (shots) and one mistake will ruin the key... so I would be lucky to make more than one over a few days.  And I don't mean in the normal way, I could explain but once you see one complete you will understand what I mean.

Anyhow, I miss you guys and GH.  I finished my Red Scarf SE and I love it, just waiting for my Hyperfuse GMK that I built it for.  After that I might sell one of my keyboards as well.  I have a lot of stuff, and was thinking of possibly opening an Etsy store to sell my wares.  Any thoughts or comments welcome... and I will post again soon and let you know the progress, as well as some pics of the "Space Race" CCCP Helmet.

Until then....  :thumb:

No, it was not me... I don't mind at all that the keys are traded / sold.  That is one of the fun parts of this hobby.  I understand it was a free key, but he was lucky enough to get in on it... and you guys can do whatever you want with them.

I still have the molds for all the keys I have made as well so if there is one you really love but missed out on it is never too late.  I have had a lot of messages and interest in the keys so hopefully I can make some money back on my investment in this hobby and put together a sale.  I really appreciate everyones kind words and each message makes me really proud.

So I finally cleaned off my work-space and have room and some time to work on crafting keys.  Hopefully I will have an update sooner rather than later.  I have a new pressure pot that I dropped way too much on, but it should make the keys much more consistent and solid.  I am picking up where I left off with the "Space Race" key (bit off a bit more than I should of on this one.. super complicated).

Oh man that's really nice of you—I applaud your generous outlook here.  :)

Looking forward to your new work!

Nice! I know some artisans get a bit bothered by marked-up aftermarket sales, and understandably so, but that's incredibly generous of you.

I'm actually very interested in the cap that was sold/in your avatar. It grew on me quite a bit after the giveaway, and I'd love to own one.

Of course... One thing the sale did was show the demand for certain colors and color schemes.  That was the popular one for the Abductor keys, and when I make more I will surely make a few of those.  Thanks for the suggestion!  :)

Yay! When my wife saw the abductor on my board (I have the one with a red base), her first comment was that this should be even better with a purple base! I'm looking forward to the sale because I hope to snag one with a purple base for her...

"Space Race" keys first cast was finished last night.  WARNING!! THE EYES WILL HAUNT YOUR NIGHTMARES!!

Info on the key:
This key was very challenging, and is not completely finished in the pics.  It is entirely plastic, the only place I "cheated" with some paint was the eyes, and the eyes because of (well reasons) had to be that wide open, but the next one I cast will have much more subtle eyes.  I really get scared looking into this guys eyes!  The reason I thought it was ok to cheat with a little paint for the eyes was because it is encased in clear plastic making up the "glass" part of the face shield.  This key also has not been sanded and polished to a shine like a space helmet should be, but I will do that once I get the eyes / face right.

5 different colors and 3 different types of plastic.  The lettering and face are one material and use two colors... and the face shield is a clear plastic.  The face is flesh toned (obviously) and the helmet is quite detailed with a silver brim.  It is hard to take a pic of this one due to its 3 dimensional(ism?) and really is different than most keys.  Left, right, top and bottom are all different... the helmet has a tube piece coming out of the helmet for oxygen / pressurization, and the bottom of the helmet has a round bracket for securing it to a space suit.

The design was inspired by Yuri Gagarin,  an early Russian cosmonaut.  Although it ended up looking like a dead or shocked cosmonaut due to the large eyes.  Again, the eyes need work and I will work it out on the next castings..  I tried doing a fully plastic eye, but it ended up being too big and strange so I had to paint over it.  In the future I will just paint the eyes and details and encase it in the clear plastic, making it completely durable.  The main body of the key is made with the strongest plastic I have, and I always use that for the base and stem... but it takes 16 hours + 5 hours in an oven before it cures so I don't think I can mass produce these.  I think that this is more of a specialty key anyways and not really mainstream so I don't know how many of you will be interested in one.

Anyways, these are Potato pics, because this is just the first cast, and once I get it how I want it I will do a full high res pic showcase.  Please be kind.. .this one was way more work than any of my other keys.. and it is not sanded and polished yet.. so it is not shiny as it will be and there are some small defects.  Anyways.. here it is... and keep in mind the future facial features and eyes will be much more sublte... and wont scare me as much as this one does.

Thanks,  it is certainly unique.  Keys like this are really fun to make... although they are so wacky, and most people like keys that are one solid color with a design that looks kinda badass and matches their board.  I make stuff like this for myself and those that like esoteric strange designs.  I will do more mainstream designs as well for sales.  It is just fun to imagine something up and even though it never comes out as nicely as I imagined, it is still a great process.  I really like the way I could put the face under the clear shield and make embossed text on a key, those were the main lessons I learned with this one.  Now I just wait for inspiration for the next one and finally start making you folks some ice cubes, abductors, and space races so others can enjoy the keys.

I will sand and polish this key and sell it for sure, so I will remember you like the shocked dude.

I had a thought, any chance you could do a clip system like the lego helmets do?  Then we could remove or swap shields with different colors.  I know I would be willing to buy a pack a shields that I could swap around.

Whoa this is amazing! I love the crazy eyes too—the cosmonaut must have seen an abductor in space, only that could explain the expression! Please add me to the queue of people who will want to buy this key (or one like it).

Well, it is possible, but would be difficult as heck for me to do.  The one thing I could do though is change the color of the shield.  I could make it a solid color or a transparent color.  Right now I am working on getting the first prototype finished up right, but I will bear that in mind.'

Hey Krytone!  Great minds think alike right?  Lol seriously though I bet yours would come out awesome you have crazy skills.  When I started you were very supportive and helped me out;  and encouraged me to share my stuff here... I really appreciate that.

The helmet was a lot more work than I thought it would be and of course you need to double mold it to get the clear part but it was fun.  It came out a little different than I first envisioned but it has character for sure.

Just try not to make me look bad with your space helmet  ^-^

Cheers!

Now would be an interesting time to tell the story of how I came up with the idea for the Flux Keypacitor.   It came to me after slipping and bumping my head while standing on the toilet to hang a clock. The idea came to me in a vision I had after being knocked out. I drew an inverted Y-shape with wires and stated "flux compression" on a sheet of paper. I also performed some mild calculations on the paper.

A bit of a sad update.

Somehow or somewhere in my process the clearance for the Yuri key was thrown off.  The key works, but doesn't press down as well as I would like.  It does function nicely for a key that is not commonly pressed, but I am a bit of a perfectionist with these things, and if the key does not serve its main purpose (being pressed of course) than I can't consider it good enough for sale.

I have two options... either scrap it and make the other keys for a sale or try to fix it now.  I think for now I am going to try to make the keys you are all asking to buy instead of trying to fix Yuri's clearance issues.  I may revisit this key again in the future, but as I said unless someone really wanted one for the aesthetic as a Scroll Lock key or something I can't consider selling them yet.

Hopefully within the next few weeks I can dust off my older molds and give Yuri a break so I can cast some caps for you fine folks.  Talk to you later!

Can't see timestamps as I'm on Tapatalk, but I'm almost positive Lootkeys showed his in late summer, whereas CC revealed his around Back to the Future Day. Pretty sure it's just a coincidence.

It could of course be a coincidence but I'm more likely to believe they agreed to share it or something. I mean, they have the same design and the same name.

I came up with the Flux Keypacitor I think as my 3rd key, you can see earlier in this thread when I posted pics of it.  I have never talked to CC, and I think it is just a coincidence that he came up with the same design and name.  I am a big BTTF fan and made it earlier this year (edit oops last year),  he made it because of the anniversary.  I have no hard feelings about him using the name / design as I am sure he did not "steal" it from me, unless he did it unconsciously.  If you like BTTF and give it a thought, it is pretty obvious.

CC is an absolute legend,  if it was anyone else I might have been bothered.. but when you see the best using the same design ideas as you it makes you feel good.  Shame is I will probably never get one of his to check out in person.  Trust me, I wish it was a collaboration...  would love to pick that guys brain, but we have never communicated.

Anyhow, here are some cubes I made yesterday... still got it!!  :thumb:

Thanks so much!

Thought I would give an insight to my process... this is what a new sculpt looks like before it is made into an actual key.  I use putty for sculpting.  This one probably won't become a key but I have made a lot of these just for fun and cast the ones that really stick with me.  I basically dremel sand down a regular key and use it as a base.  Sorry for the potato pic but I am too lazy and just used my phone heh.

This one scares me a bit... I am afraid of it being in my apartment. lol

Hey Suicidal Orange; made one with you in mind... ignore the white dots, that is because I am waiting on proper release and the cheap stuff leaves spots.  (Lesson learned: never buy the cheap stuff)

Oh wow, thanks for the thought!  My orange board is Hack'd by Geeks, I think you made some SA "ice cubes" last time so would an SA "fire cube" be possible?

I like the scary face too, though the nose doesn't look very comfy to press...

For sure, I think I still have my SA mold... and ya the nose is a little extreme.  Thats the beauty of putty though, I can sand it down, take it off, replace it, whatever I want!  I am waiting on some supplies, hopefully be here in a few days and I can craft some more caps.

On the SA thing, unfortunately the mold that I was using for that key was destroyed (due to a foolish maneuver by yours truly).  BUT while I can't make a fire SA right now, I still have some clears and blues, that were cast before the mold got ripped up... if you are interested in SA I will definitely include them in the mini sale coming up.

RIP mold :(

Sadly Hack'd is a dark set so trans or ice blue will not go well with it, but hopefully they sell well so you will remake the mold.  If you do can I suggest you (also?) do deep dish homing keys?  No-one's made F&J sets for SA and there have been a lot of sets run recently so they should be popular :thumb:

Sounds like SA is popular right now, I actually use SA right now myself.  I will make that my next mold... super easy, just takes some time... I will let you know when I have the SA mold up and running again :) you know I aim to please...  :thumb:

Sale has been moved to Artisan Services - helpful link (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=79058.0) or see OP for pics.

I have not gone for the orange one, tempting as it is!

Has anyone gotten invoices?

I am not MIA.. invoices should be out to everyone tomorrow, or at least a message about what you got.  I had to wait on some shipping boxes,  then I am going to send out invoices.  I don't want to send them out until I know the keys can go right out.  Thanks for your patience!

Pictures don't do it justice. This cap is really striking in person.

I didn't know what it was at first, but knew right away by the stuffing!
No LEDs this time, but the packaging still was top notch!

I have been making some new blanks... they are "SA" Row 3 I believe.  Basically matches my Symbiosis caps.  Since these are the caps on my main board I might make quite a few, especially if others are interested.  I know most really like OEM but I love the feel of these when typing, and that they are all the same profile.

I spy orange!  Would be awesome if you made homing keys as Hack'd is not all row 3 so a wasd set is not going to work, though I daresay I could find somewhere to put a couple anyway :D

SA artisans? Never hear of that before - I'm sure people will be interested, are you planning on sculpting on these?
