Title: Keycap Fun Times
Post by: ApocalypseMaow on Sun, 12 April 2015, 01:59:41
I've been kicking this idea around since I first got here, but lots of people have been making amazing stuff...
Soooooo I didn't think I could make anything I'd be happy with.
Well I got some ideas and figured it was time to see what I could do.

Here is my start!!!

I don't like the cat at all... It looks like crap, but I figure I can get it whipped into shape soon.

They look really great, especially the shark :)

What's the underneath like?

What's the underneath like?
Just a stock dsa cap

but I would like to bulk them up if I make a cast.

THIN IS NO GOOD!!!

True - many artisan keycaps do seem to be thicker than the average OEM keycap.

The shark is awesome! My son would go nuts to get that on his gaming board.

If you are affixing them to existing caps, you should be able to do buckling springs, right?

So from the looks of it you used super sculpey? And if those are PBT DSA caps you used as the base, then you can cook the sculpey at a lower heat (just north of 200 degrees works very well for this size). That makes the mold making process a bit easier because you don't have to worry about deformation.

Apart from that I would try to smooth out the cats glasses a bit to sit closer to the face, otherwise the silicone that would be between the two pieces will eventually tear out when you try to demold it.

They are great looking caps, and I wish you the best of luck in the crazy world of casting!

I like the profile you chose for the shark's face.  The cat amuses me.

I wasn't sure what kind of medium you used for modeling it, the keycap was obvious
