Title: Dark specks/spots in white PBT plastic
Post by: ttzhou on Mon, 13 April 2015, 23:26:14
Not sure if this has been posted before, did a search but wasn't able to find a concrete answer.

I've noticed two dark specks on my white doubleshot PBT vortex (blue/white) keycaps that I just cannot seem to clean off.

See here (dark specks near the top for the R, and in the middle side for the ";" - these are not lens specks):

I am beginning to wonder if

1. They are actual chips in the keycap plastic that reveals the black underneath (unlikely, this implies the keycaps were painted white, which I don't think is the case)

2. They were impurities in the molding process which caused some black paint or grime to get molded into the plastic (likely given Vortex's QC)

3. They are just specks of grime that are really, really freaking hard to clean off (haven't tried denture tabs).

Anywho, was just wondering if anyone has similar experience and could help shed some light? It's not a real bother, but curiosity always gets the better of me.

Thanks for reading ^_^

1) Would seem feasible if the specks were blue

2) My guess

3) My hope, based on the pictures I still think 2 though.

Whatever the case, I get your point. I have some backlit keycaps that have small specks on them where the actual LED emits through, I ignore them.

Where'd you get the caps?

Ordered from someone in UK. They were actually there on the pictures he sent me as well, so I don't think it is his fault.

Not a big deal for me. I might wait for Massdrop to get the 60% keyset back and order one of those to hopefully fix these.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and yes, I would suspect 2. I figured somebody with expertise in plastic moulding must exist somewhere in this forum.

Cheers ^_^

Looks like dirt got in the molds.
