Agreed. I can always put on another shirt or sweater, but for some reason I cannot walk around outside in my underwear. Plus it's way easier to get warm then it is to get unsweaty.

Agreed. Though I have been spending summer in Italy for the last couple of years and it's nice to be able to relax on the beech and go for a little swim when its 30C... though I'm glad when I can come home and the heat is a little more manageable lol

That's said, it's very much depend on how's your regular temparature most of the time. Back when I was in Vietnam, Saigon to be specific, the outside temp was like always >35 in almost the whole year, my room was conditioned to around 26, and sometimes I felt cold.

And now in Finland, you know, they laugh at the thread's title.

About temperature, 72F aka 22C is generally regarded as "room temperature" in common usage, around here at least, and I think that it is a very nice temperature.

However, if it is that temperature indoors and you walk in through the door on a hot day outside, it feels like an icebox, but if you walk in to it from a cold day in the winter, it seems like an oven.

To me, 80F is uncomfortably warm by several degrees, at least.

It's 80F in your house??? I would be miserable. Anything above 74 inside and I'm sweating like crazy. Outside I'm not very sensitive to temperature, but inside it's important.

It is exactly because of the precedent that is set. Especially since Canada didn't switch until 1975.
As someone who did not grow up with the Imperial system it doesn't make a lick of sense. At all...

I'm Dutch but I have a hard time dealing with cold even though I love winter and cycling in the snow. Probably because I'm too tall and skinny.
25-30�C is the most comfortable temperature but it depends heavily on humidity.
At 90% humidity, 30�C is uncomfortable but at 30% humidity, 45�C is downright nice with the exception of the need for a hat and lots of water... and the constant nosebleeds. **** I hated those last time I was in the SouthWest during August.

Big agreement, folks.

Actually I have this fantasy since childhood. The country where I live in is perpetually 30+C and global warming is making it even hotter. Average temps should be 34C by 2100.

With so much energy blasted at us from the sun everyday, surely we can do something with that excess energy. What if we constructed a gigantic dome covered with solar panels and used it to cover the city? Most of the heat would be absorbed and could be used to do things like power the lights and subway. It would be quite nice to have an ambient temperature of 20C or lower and we'll all be as well dressed as people in London. And the excess god knows how many joules will make us energy independent.

If solar panels are $1000/sq meter, it'll cost only 350 billion to cover half the entire country. Solar energy at the equator is about 1500kWh/m2 per year, taking in account more clouds. At 20% efficiency, 350km2 of panels should yield 105 billion kWh of energy. That's about 2.5x as much total energy as this country uses currently. Furthermore a significant usage of electricity in Singapore goes towards air conditioning now, and a lot of oil is imported to refuel ships calling at the port rather than being used by locals.

I could allow my fantasy to continue. As an island we are surrounded by water. Our neighbour Indonesia kindly supplies lots of carbon dioxide every year by burning their forests. If we have spare electricity we could create our own oils via the 'Power to Liquid' method. Then we would be totally self sufficient in energy and not even need to import bunker fuel for ships.

Singapore has the funds, the technical skills, and the population density to make this worthwhile. The political will for massive projects is already there. Already large parts of the country are underground, we have sections of the city covered by sunroofs and fans which make the street below cooler. Investing in a project like this is only a question of scale. It'll make us a genuinely air conditioned nation, energy independent, etc...

I'm sure some geek will come in to shoot down my fantasy, but of course that's the purpose of posting in this thread. It's a TP thread, so intellectual rigour is totally not needed. :p

Fohat, in the 1990s (recall, Persian Gulf War I was to prevent Saddam from getting too much control over oil) I once had a conversation with an American college schoolmate about how the US could get out of dependency on the Arabs.

USA has the technology and the money. And it has tons of deserts where the sun does nothing but shine all day and there are no clouds.

Even with the technology back then, it wouldn’t take up half of Nevada to supply all energy needs of the USA. And you could shut down all the polluting oil derricks in Texas and coal mines in Kentucky.

And what was that guy’s response?

We don’t need to. We now have troops in Saudi Arabia. They’ll sell us their oil because they have to.

That was really memorable.

It is slightly cooler than I prefer at 80F. I think 82F works better for me in my house. Saves a lot of energy during the summer months too which translates to a cheaper electric bill.

Hm? The Mission is a mostly residential area, with some mixed-use buildings of small shops, etc. Historically, it was a working class Irish neighborhood and then for a long time a working class Hispanic neighborhood with a pretty diverse group of residents. In the last couple decades like many parts of the city, for better or worse, it has been gentrifying, and many newcomers are yuppies, especially people in the tech industry. Definitely not a business district though.
