Title: Couple of Model F 122's - $9.99 starting bid
Post by: orihalcon on Thu, 23 April 2015, 16:12:29

Just throw some model M caps on and should be good to go. If the controller for whatever reason is bad, it can be upgraded to an xwhatsit.

Spacebars are the other slight issue since M type won't work without workarounds, but that is doable too.

Damn.  Was hoping no one would post this.  I plan on bidding on one.  I need more model f in my life (for my office daily driver).

Sorry, figured someone here would want these for a project since they aren't complete, which will discourage a lot of bidders.  I bet the price will end up being pretty reasonable.

"Was hoping no one would post this" should be the tagline for this subforum.

Lately I try to only post BIN's or truly rare items, knowing that most of the others likely have people watching them and don't want the price to get driven up.

And yes I saw these before they showed up here.

After getting flak (one of our Aussie friends even called me a "rat bastard" when I was new) for posting auctions, I generally make it a policy to only post Buy-It-Now items.

And, as I have said many times, if you see a Buy-It-Now at a price that you consider fair - JUST DO IT !

Yeah, I think I will switch to posting just buy it now items from now on as a few have suggested.

I'm honestly surprised that no one posted the 4683 board over here. That kept the price much more sane than if it were to have been posted.

If you are referring to vertical Enter and small Left Shift, all 122-key terminal models are like that.

Hence my guide ....

Damn.  Was hoping no one would post this.  I plan on bidding on one.  I need more model f in my life (for my office daily driver).

maybe 3-4 years ago, but too many people watch "ibm keyboard" now. it doesn't matter if it gets posted here or not, it'll go for market price. especially if it's got "model f" actually in the title. the only chance at a good deal is for stuff so rare no one knows what it is (like parak's POS kb) or if it's mis-listed, like my "IBM system information card" (displaywriter beam spring, and even then another gh'er saw it)

^ this. if it's buy it now or best offer and the BIN price is fair, just buy it. don't try to get greedy, you'll lose the item. a good deal you get is always better than a great deal you don't.

Well, first one went for $47, the other went for $89. Hope you placed decent bids because getting an F-122 even with work needed for either of those prices is more than fair.  The first one's a steal.

I'm not a fan of these monstrosities, would have picked either of them up for those prices.

I lost the first one. (kicking myself) I bid like a maniac on the second one.  Put in a bid with 1 second left and won.  More than I wanted to pay, but damn, bidding is exhilarating.  I should have it by Wednesday.

At least they spaced the times out by a few hours.

I used to scold sellers who listed multiple similar items at seconds or minutes apart.

Sniping does not help if you can't or won't afford more than one - you will only bid once.

Assuming that it is not the middle of the night, a smart seller should allow at least an hour, and preferably 4-8 hours between end times to let losing bidders re-assess their options.

Yup, that'd be me. Sorry, Touch_It, I really didn't think my bid would be taken seriously. Complete F-122s commonly top $125 now, so I figured it'd get up to at least near that. But as fohat and others tell us: Even if you don't think you'll win, if you want it, bid something. I also realized that if I didn't bid and it ended up going for, like, $40, I'd be kicking myself. So I bid $50 ($51.50, actually—they also tell us, "Always bid odd amounts!"), and was totally amazed when I saw I'd gotten it.

I'm glad you got the other one... I'm sure anyone here would be quite pleased to get a similar deal.

I'm now the rather flabbergasted owner of two F-122's. This means that if I try to mod one and irredeemably damage it, I  can try to use what I learned to not wreck the other one. People at my skill level need redundant everything.

Me too.  I think maybe the BIN with "Make Offer" listings are best.  Make your best offer and hope to get it, or take it at the Buy-It-Now.

It occurred to me that I may have sounded like a pig above, or like I was bragging. If so, sorry—I'm really not the greedy, competitive type... Believe me, I never imagined I'd win. I bid just so I wouldn't go "Doh!!" later if it went for next to nothing. Haven't we all done that a few times? Okay then.  :?)

I am glad you got the first one.  I wish I would have bid higher, but I'm not upset and I don't think you sounded like a pig.  It should have went for more.  Even with the crack on the side of the case.

Yeah, I often wish ebay would let me specify: I'll bid up to $50 on this one, but if I don't get it then I'll bid $45 on this other one which finishes a bit later, and if not...

Surely there is some sniping service which lets you set up a wishlist of items in this way?

Ah, that's good—thanks, dude. (BTW, just to clarify: I didn't buy two of the eBay F's; I already had one I'd found locally.)

It should have went for more.  Even with the crack on the side of the case...

I'm glad you mentioned it. I'd looked at the photos but didn't notice that. It's much better to know about issues beforehand, rather than being surprised by them when an item arrives. Fortunately, the crack's on a corner and won't affect the case's integrity. I wonder if anyone's successfully repaired something like that?

That's an awesome idea, but I don't know if anyone would want to implement the considerable extra development it'd require.

Update.  Got mine in the mail today.  Awesome seller.  Even included a wire today.  Unfortunately it is a model m wire but the seller was very nice to have him include it for free.  Also the keyboard was very well packaged in bubble wrap. The case also has no damage witch I'm very thankful for.

The F-122 came with attached cable. You will likely be doing the Teensy thing so it will not matter.

You are lucky to get an unbroken case. Be gentle with it!

So, just wondering—has anyone tried to fix this kind of break on an F?:

That's the photo from the F-122 I won, and the zoom-in I failed to do, thus I didn't see the break (doh!).

I've heard JB Weld is good for cracks, but how would you replace a missing piece like that? Maybe it's just going to be that way?

I would smooth it down and live with it.

If you ever stumble across a first-generation M-122, you could replace and upgrade the case.

If I was determined to fill it in, I would cut, file, and Dremel a slice from the case of a throw-away junk keyboard to fit. I would adhere it from the back with a big gob of JB Weld, reinforced with wire.

The truly difficult part would be an inconspicuous blend on the face side.

Less is more here, for sure.

Ander, you could fabricate a piece of plastic roughly the shape of the missing piece and use JB Weld to fill in the gaps.  I don't know the extent of the damage, but it looks like you may need to do the side and the front too.
It's not impossible.  You can do it.

I was finally able to get down to WA to pick mine up. Beauty! It works perfectly on a Soarer's cable. I can even get spaces by pressing the missing spacebar's spring, LOL. Apparently the spacebar actually got broken somehow, as the seller was kind enough to tape the stabilizer wire to the case—no small favour, considering how rare they are.

The corner break's quite inconspicuous; you'd never notice it unless you were looking for it. So I think I just won't worry about it.

Thanks again for letting me know about this.  :?)

Grats on the stabilizer wire.  He was nice enough to send me one, but it was for a model M :(.

The spacebars are the same size and configuration but the wires and holes are different.

The problem is that the F tabs, which only accept the thinner wires, get in the way if you want to go to the cheap and easy M.

Wcass's elegant flat washer system my be the easy answer.

Ah, I'd just assumed he'd attached one for an F. Now that I examine it, though, it's pretty thick, so I think it's an M's. (Wonder where he got all of them?)

That's fine, though, as fohat's right about the washer trick, which allows you to use an M spacebar (and stabilizer) on an F. (Dorkvader had pointed it out to me too—you guys are awesome.) Here's the actual DT page (http://deskthority.net/w-a-n-t-t-o-b-u-y-f59/ibm-f-to-m-space-bar-stabilizer-t9420.html) where he shows how easy it is.

That washer trick is for the 107-key Model F, which I think means the PC-AT keyboard.  It won't work on the 122-key, which has two little hooks for the stabilizer wire.

I think that they all have the "hooks" aka tabs, they have to go before they can be replaced with something else.

AT's and XT's don't.  The wire for the spacebar is inside the keyboard.

The 107 keyboard is larger than an AT or XT by a long shot.  That's one of the 4704 variants.  They have the spacebar with an external wire and hooks.
