Title: Salted Black liquorice?
Post by: Air tree on Thu, 23 April 2015, 19:24:47
Okay, here's a question mostly for the Scandinavian members, I was wondering what salty black liquorice tastes like? I was thinking of ordering some, it costs about $15 for a 24 piece little box.

I was talking about it with some friends and they proceeded to tell me that sounds disgusting. But It sounds alright. I love me some black liquorice, but the salted variety intrigues me....

I've had different types.  Some of it is okay, some tastes like ass.  I love black licorice, but the Dutch salted black licorice I had was just god awful.  It could be good with the right sea salt though.

I don't like licorice at all, but salt does sound like an improvement.

I think I'm going to order a thing of it... I hope they have good sea salt. Portland's not far, so shipping shouldn't be bad...

BTW, the "salt" in salty licorice is Salmiak = ammonium chloride. It is what gives salty licorice its special taste.
Not like table salt (sodium chloride) at all.

Have you ever tried "Fisherman's Friend" strong lozenges? The regular variety contains licorice, but not salmiak, but it is strong like salty licorice is, so I think that could give you some idea. Actually, it is stronger than most salty licorice. The salmiak contents varies.
Most licorice over here contains a small amount of salmiak.

Y, "proper" salt liquorice has Sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride) salt in.

They make it by combining ammonia with hydrochloric acid... sounds good, right? It's sometimes used for cleaning the tips of soldering irons and as a flux.

It actually tastes alright, but you have to get a good brand.

One thing that irks me here in Finland is that most locally produced bags of candy have some pieces of Salmiakki (the local version of salt liquorice) in them and it's quite a shock to the system when you're eating a bag of fruit candies.

Dutch dubbel zoute drop is definitely an acquired taste, but “ass” is not at all a good comparison.

What brand should I look for? I'm wanting to find some online, but I feel like that might be hard...

I enjoy some black licorice but the Dutch double or triple salt stuff is way too salty tasting to enjoy.

Do you have a World Market nearby? I seem to recall seeing some of the Katjse Salzinge Heringe licorice fish there for like $3. I have no idea if that is considered as good in the realm of salty licorice but it's a cheap and easy option if you have a store nearby.

much better than the sweet stuff. thing is that the taste varies immensely depending on the brand. salty liquorice is about as vague as describing every imaginable type of chocolate as just chocolate though.
