The Girl's world Dilemma:
The social culture today is dependent on "external appearance" because the deeper interaction required to achieve interpersonal "understanding" is too time-consuming.
So, this has created the necessary industry to service the IMAGE of well-being.
This industry also determines where that "luxury" cutoff is.
To appear In-The-Money, the majority of people now MUST buy and adhere to such standards.
Phone > $500
Car > $40,000
Cloths (at any 1 time) >$300
Laptop = Macbook
The Only people who are excluded from this general "Outer-Wealth" tunnel vision and not required to Demonstrate their wealth are
Celebrities, and Financial celebrities
____ The people who obviously have money
Physically attractive people
____ Their physical appearance retains enough value such that they're essentially "born" wealthy, (despite the time limit of such form of wealth)
OLD people age 50+ in appearance
____ Who are considered for the better part Non-competitors around the world
So, ask yourself, Are you "RICH", Are you "~Beautiful"..
If the answer is yes to either query, You are excluded from the need to make a fashion statement.
If you're Neither Beautiful, Nor Rich, you will need to either Get Rich, or Get the appearance of being Rich by Buying into (luxury) accessories.
For example___
You will need to buy an Iphone or Galaxy S6/Note4
If you buy ANY OTHER PHONE, you're automatically assigned to the low to low-middle income class.. <and THIS is not fashionable>
Pocket Ball and Chain
The one often (unseen) problem as the result of external-based luxury demonstration is that the items occupy a "non-trivial" percentage of income, even for the upper-middle class..
What is Trivial-income.. if You make $100,000.. anything that costs $100 or less to replace is trivial, or =/< 0.1% of your income.. (income * 0.001)
If this person making $100,000 buys an $800 phone.. That means he is carrying around a significant portion of his "wealth" (almost 1%) in a fairly "dangerous" and "destructible" location, the Pocket.
This creates a Pocket-Protective mentality.. You must now be ever cognizant of the possession of your $800 phone, AND you must refrain from especially Large movements to avoid unintentional damage to the "Leg" area.. WHICH happens to be a highly mobile area..
This Cost driven accessory has now become the Proverbial, "Ball and Chain"
For ^^^ this reason Tp4 uses Nokia 521.
-The liberation phone.-
It only does talk text and email. Everything else is too slow
It's durable, dispensable, and prevents me from wasting time on the suite of procrastination inducing software that mobile computing has inevitably cultivated.
I have a spare 5s in case I'm banned from using my Homeless getup at social events.

Yes I moved this out of the Cell recommendations thread, because it became too long of an answer to a simple question

I still believe such a device is possible.... But my guess is I just didn't have the right set of materials.
The cup i used may be too thick/ too thin, the diaphragm diameter too large/small, the string too.

It will cost you two jokers more in threads to stretch between the USA and Sweden, than a regular phone with a data plan (ie use whatsapp calls to get free calls just like how you would have if using a couple of cans).

You made some good points! However, I don't think anything's really changed. True happiness has always come from within—not from status, or approval, or toys, but from accepting, appreciating, and having a good relationship with yourself. Everything of true value starts there.
The more materialistic and superficial our culture becomes, the greater opportunity we have to learn what's really important. There's just that much more contrast between the two. :?)

so, does shopaholic also out from the tunnel vision?

the lag on whatsapp calls though...
i doubt 28571000 ms(give or take) with that long of a string will be worse than whatsapp. :) assuming perfect conditions

@ Ander
I've always followed the same happiness-from-within prescription until they told me happiness is just a chemical reaction..
That was a turning point for me, where I was forced to recognize myself as a Machine.
There is no such thing as happiness..
Only a "happy" button.. in the program..
If happiness is what I am after, and it was all that was required to survive, then humanity has had it licked for quite some time..
After industrialization and then our second Renaissance (silicon), all manners of Happiness inductance became broadly available. Man has conquered much of its Immediate natural threats, YET the hollowness persists.
I find that this is because we've fulfilled our natural programmed motivation, and are now required to exceed it.
