Title: Too much ping (Poker ll)
Post by: Sed8op8 on Tue, 28 April 2015, 05:05:44
Hey fellow Geekhackers
I have a problem that I'm hoping someone here can help me with. I just recently added LEDs and swapped cases in my poker 2. Before I swapped cases the clears in the stock case sounded slightly pingy not too loud but loud enough. Now that I  swapped it into an aluminum case the ping sound has gotten quite loud. I know I have read about people adding stuff to the housings to silence this but I am not sure of what material to add? Specifically where to place it  and how much to use? If anyone has any experience with this a few pointers would be much appreciated!

Some shelf liner in the bottom of the case should help a tad.

i have some shelf liner but its fairly thick(rigid) textured plastic hmmmm. So just pull the PCB out and line the bottom of the housing with this..? Thanks for the quick response !

I've used the rubbery rolled up **** from target for dirt cheap. Have no clue if your rigid stuff will work.

Lube the springs and the ping will vanish.

I was thinking the springs might have something to do with it as there was ping even in the stock case. I have some Krytox 104 coming from sprit hopefully it will work for the springs

Yeah it will probably work, just put super little on the top and bottom, so little that you don't even see the lube on it, it just needs to get the wet of the lube if that makes sense.

I pretty much used the same shelf liner as this one (http://www.amazon.com/Con-Tact-Premium-Non-Adhesive-Non-Slip-12-Inches/dp/B001AH8PLI/) inside my CODE keyboard :

It didn't fix completely the problem but it's an easy and inexpensive mod !

Does the Poker sit on the desk just like in the pictures? If it's just on wood like that, it could be enhancing the ping. Try sitting the keyboard on top of a mousepad or something similarly thick. Tekmats, large mousepads, neoprene sheets, and towels are all options.

Oooooh yeah. Padding under pcb AND case.

I'd surely use something without holes for sound absorption...
Vortex - pexon sell the aluminium case with a continuous sheet of plastic on the inside, I think for preventi shortes.

Not sure if it's too thick.
IKEA VARIERA
Drawer mat
$2.99

thats the exact stuff I have Gianni thank you!  Unfortunately I just got done adding LEDs to my poker and I'm a little hesitant to take soldering iron to it again and take the switches out to live them(kind of regretting not doing it all at once) as it Took me awhile to get everything working properly! :(
Thanks a lot everyone for your help you guys rock !

Also... The higher the frequency, the higher the mass of the sound insulating material.
So you could add the a plastic foil and something like a lead foil, which can be cut using scissors.

You want to use the thin shelf liner with just a touch of padding. Not the thick padded stuff, or anything rigid. I had a similar issue with my Poker with Blues when I put it in an aluminum case. Just unscrew the PCB, cut the shelf liner to size, making sure you account for the DIP Switch hole, put the liner at the bottom of the case and put the PCB back in. It is easy as can be and made a world of difference.

The ping is always there, yet many factors affect it, sometimes it's muted, sometimes it only appears in silence

I like stuffing my keyboard with stuff, I even love it, especially adding things that add a bit of a bulk, yet ping-wise speaking, it's pointless, the springs and the plate is going to ping the same, only the bottom out sound might be improved

Thick keycaps mask the ping well, dcs keycaps mask the ping better, o-rings absorb the force and reduce the ping, yet stuffing the keyboard is pointless in terms of ping, IMO
