There was already a company called Logitech in Japan when the Logitech we know and love set up shop. So they became Logicool.

This.  Logitech - sounds like a reasonable hardware company name.  Logicool - sounds like some off-brand bullsh*t you find at flea markets.

Filco?  That sounds like the brand of TV my great-grandfather used to own.
 
Some of these tech companies have weird names.

I was thinking how "iRocks"-ish it sounds. Either way, I agree, it's a rather stupid name.

Also, how come us 'gaijin' ended up with a variant that lookes like it had a jackhammer taken to it?

i thought it was a 1st gen/2nd gen thing, but it doesnt appear so, but i know ive seen the gray version in the US.

i have the hammer version.  didint think these still sold for as much as i paid for it years ago.  might have to sell it since i now own a g9.

Were the buttons on the 518's side clicky?

I bought a G5 recently expecting the clicky side buttons of the co-worker's G7.  Sadly, they don't click at all, compared with the MX400 I had been riding.  I find they actually boost productivity for a web developer/.

The texture on the Logicool looks nice. I wonder how well it wicks away sweat compared to the regular Logitech 518..

the Logitech G3 (MX-518) uses the Avago 3080 optical sensor and the Logitech MX-518 Rev 2 uses the Avago 3080E optical sensor they both have the same performance but the Logitech MX-518 Rev 2 has a data saturation problem.

the graphs above show when Setpoint is installed there is going to be data saturation no matter what value the resolution is set to. to minimize this it is recommended not to install Setpoint, overclock the usb port and set the resolution to a lower value than 1800 CPI because at 1800 CPI it is way too erratic and the performance loss brings it down to a OS MLT 04 optical sensor (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0).

Logitech MX-518 Rev 2 owners shouldn't have a problem with this information since the Setpoint drivers can be difficult to install and if you manage to get them installed they are next to useless.

basically setpoint lowers the maximum movement distance (in a set amount of time) (ie, physical speed) before it starts to drop data
which is really ironic
its nice that all functions of my g9 work without setpoint, and it has onboard memory for the options so i dont even need setpoint for custom DPI settings
