Title: Has anyone ever colored an HHKB case
Post by: Overside on Wed, 13 May 2015, 16:45:57
Basically I don't like the boring greyish white of my HHKB type-s case anymore and want to try some new exciting colors but I'm not sure which way is the best to paint/dye a plastic keyboard case...or if i even should attempt it.
If anyone has done it before pleeeeease let me know how it worked out.
Thanks,

People have used idye poly in the past to success with their keycaps, I would be hesitant to dye my HHKB, though. As it's much more risky and not replaceable.

I have never seen it done with an ABS case before. You'd be much better off getting it hydro dipped or something of that nature. The only cases I seen dyed are the IBM cases that are PBT.

How is dying the case more risky than the caps? The stock caps aren't that easy to come by AFAIK.

And are you sure it's ABS? If so, I know idye poly is best used with PBT.

Could always plastidip it. Not sure if hydro-dipping is the best option since I don't know the process so I won't comment on that.

Because the case is ABS

Someone that was selling clacks on eBay a while ago had a pink HHKB case and it looked pretty cool I think.

Because the case is ABS

Meaning the case is more prone to plastic deformation if heated?

You can get sets of HHKB caps on demand, as they are still in production.

And the case is ABS for sure. I don't know a good dye for ABS. You can use iDye on abs at a lower temp and it should be fine. *Should

But if you mess up on the case, you can't get another one without a lot of work.

Exactly.

Quality spray paint is fine. I've done a ton of mice and QFRs (some multiple times). I like the look of the HHKBs at home, so haven't done one yet. Maybe when I get really bored...

Do you happen to know who/where provides hydodipping for the average guy?

I feel like plastidip adds like a layer of paint that peels off, i want the paint to be more or less part of the plastic itself, would spray paint be better at that? don't know too much about painting :/

You can buy hydro dip kits from ebay all day and they are extremely easy to use!!!

I've been kicking the idea around for my HHKB and if I ever get around to it, I'll post pics/write up!!!
