Title: Ducky Shine 3 LED Problem
Post by: rrspamrr on Sat, 30 May 2015, 23:30:01
So I recently purchased a Ducky shine 3 mx blue tkl with green LEDs and I must say that it essentially has everything I ever wanted from a keyboard. Problem is that only a few months in (with minor use) the led on the 0 key has gone out. Now, my question is twofold: one, could the death of one LED cause the death of surrounding ones as well  (I'm thinking of the Christmas light effect right now) and two how could I go about fixing this? Any help will be much appreciated!

Busted LED should not affect the others.

I've plugged in Keyboards that had 90% of the switches/LEDs removed and they worked fine.

You will have to desolder and replace the LED.

If the keyboard is still under warranty then please try that route before you even open the keyboard up.

I'd rather not deal with the long and arduous process of RMAing so I'd much rather fix it myself. It's great to know that the dead led won't effect any others, but now I need to figure put exactly how to open it up and what to solder (never done anything like this before). Does anyone now of a step by step guide for changing leds on the Ducky Shine that they could link me to?

Your biggest problem could turn out to be finding a matching LED.

Another alternative is for someone else do do the mod for you, especially if you are unsure about attempting it yourself.

The artisan services (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=160.0) lists a bunch of GHers who provide keyboard repair services (depending on which country you are in).

I don't really feel too comfertbale with the idea of shipping my keyboard to some person I've never before seen in my life... Is it really that hard to replace just one light? And I came across a pack of (100 I believe) green LEDs for $15 so that should be fine right?

Literally just modded a Ducky Shine 3 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zSINl6PTi-0&feature=youtu.be) full size that I gifted to a friend.

pm me if you have questions, this is the 3rd ducky I've modded.

And they are pretty easy to work with, especially compared to Asian boards like Keycool and Noppoo.

Edit: get LEDs off eBay.  Like $5 for really nice 100x count LEDs.
You will also need a decent soldering iron with temp control and a solder sucker.
