Title: Can Realforce keyboards be case swapped?
Post by: last100yen2 on Wed, 03 June 2015, 15:01:11
I just got Realforce 87U Tenkeyless 55g (White/Gray) which is nice, but now I am thinking about getting Realforce 87U All-45g "EK Edition" (Black/Dark Gray) and swap the case. I want to get Black case with White and grey caps with 55g.
Is this possible to do? If so how easy is it to do it?

It can be done and is very easy, swapping cases is quicker than swapping keycaps.

Yes, it's very easy to do; the case should come apart after removing the tabs from the bottom/top.

But yep, definitely keep your eyes peeled on Classifeds and possibly r/mechmarket (reddit). You can find boards that appear from time to time. .

Since it might be a while before obtaining the black case...have you considered purchasing a set of Realforce keys? You can get colored ones for around $150 from Widebasket on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/REALFORCE-Key-Cap-Set-f-Realforce-87-104-Keyboard-Topre-English-Green-Keycap-/281397512548?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4184994964), but esoomenona currently has a green set for $100 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=62635.0).

It's not quite the same as a new case, but keycaps would save $$ and you might end up liking it! Just a thought  :)

Thank you so much for your ideas! and also the information about swapping
The reason I was thinking about buying 45g is because I wanted to feel the 45g topre.

I think 55g is good, but kind of heavy and wanted to try out the 45g.

I thank you for your suggestions though

Ok update

I just purchased 45g Realforce keyboard, will swap the case and probably keep the 45g and sell the realforce 55g white case black caps!

Thank you all for suggestions

Swapped mine. The black caps on off-white body doesn't look nearly as Stormtrooper-like as I thought it would because it's more of a stone colour (unlike my KUL ES-87).

Post back what you think of the keycaps. I was surprised to find that the black keycaps actually sound and feel a little different than the white/grey ones.

You'll be in the unique position to try both side by side as I did.
