Title: say'n hi!!!!
Post by: williamjoseph on Fri, 25 September 2009, 01:51:56
thought i would anounce myself and say hello.....well...   hello.   found this sight after finding the daskeyboard on thinkgeek.com.  after that started looking around and found on accident the sub culture of clicky keyboards.  well, i ordered myself the 104/105 key on-the-ball keyboard by Unicomp.

included file photo hopefully......

thought it was a better buy rather than the daskeyboard......

anyways, glad to find a sight that likes the old but still usefull things in this world.....

Do you plan on using that trackball exclusively when using the keyboard?  If so, I'd be interested in knowing how you like it after some extended use.

BTW, welcome to geekhack!

Hi & welcome.

Looks like a good choice of keyboard, the trackball doesn't impact the size or layout of that board at all. Win-win situation.

Does it come with the blue ball like that, or was that your addition.  Either way, it looks great.

Welcome to GeekHack. The only question now is which are you going to take?

Most of us that hang around here for any length of time took the red pill.

This site will make you buy keyboards.. lots of them.

I've just got my new toy today, and have more on the way. If an enterprising GeekHacker set up a Betty Ford's for Keyboard Fetishists, the majority of this site may as well just put their paychecks into this account.

But welcome, nice keyboard. Buckling springs are fantastic.

Hiya and welcome to the club williamjoseph.

Your recent purchase looks very dapper - I hope it makes typing a worthwhile experience for you.

I`m a new bloke on this intriguing forum myself   -   I only joined a couple of days ago

and the members have been unfailingly curteous and accomodating as I know next

to nothing about keyboards but I`m learning more every day

In fact, I just got my first decent buckling spring keyboard on Monday last.

It is a 102 key British layout IBM 1391406 that is roughly twenty years old and it sounds

and feels gorgeous to me at least.

I think you`ll like it here williamjoseph

well, its reasuring to know that i am not the only one in the boat that is reasured by quality.....   i have previously worked upon a mechanical keyboard....   it was vintage with my parent's first computer, a win 3.1 machine with a 40mb HD with 4mbs ram.   oooo, those were the days.  i kept that keyboard through one other computer running win95... had to get a fancy adapter to get it to fit a ps2 port.  still, the one i have comming, i probabbly will keep using the regular mouse, this monkey just wanted more buttons.... he he he.....

this is my current keyboard.....

its great for games, however typing does tend to get slightly anoying as the number pad and the keys typically associated with "home, end, del, insert...." are integrated and require an installed driver and shift functions to activate or deactivate.  even though it is a rubber blister keyboard, its still great for my games.....

I have a trackball keyboard like that, except it's one of the original Lexmark ones. I think it's great since it's got the nice clicky feel and an integrated 25mm trackball. I actually use the trackball without a mouse due to limited space in my computing setup.

Good luck with your new purchase!

Oh, I know that, but is the ball they give you blue, or did you replace, say, a beige ball with a blue one later?

I'm tempted to get one of the Unicomps+mouse device, like the Endurapro or one of the trackballs.  Too bad the nub in the Endurapro isn't as good as the modern Thinkpad nubs, they're actually quite nice.  Anyway, +1 for hearing how you like it. :)

GOT IT!!! it types great and looks just like the file photo, however i am a little unimpressed with the trackball, it is clunky to say the least.  i may open up the keyboard and try to find out if i can change the guts of the mouse to an optical of i can squeze it in.  its a great keyboard, but the trackball is functional, but just a tad choppy....

I suppose I could Google it, but what would the fun of that be:  Is the trackball mechanical or optical?

I love how that works!  Thanks for indulging me.  Endurapro looks like it's my board then. ;)

While I would prefer the trackball by the arrow keys, I don't think the top right is terrible.  That is, until you start typing random numbers every time you go to use the mouse.
