Title: Logitech Marble Mouse unresponsive at speed
Post by: CrapTypist on Mon, 28 September 2009, 18:51:30
I use Marble Mouses on all of my computers, and love them a lot, but I just got a second big monitor on my work computer, and am now recognizing a problem with the way the ball tracks when it's flicked at high speed (to cross large distances).

It seems to track fine up to a certain speed, then it seems to move the pointer inversely proportionately to higher speed- it just seems to lose the plot at some point.

I've cleaned all the workings really well and investigated control panel settings.  Is this just a limitation of the optical reader tech?  Is there a way to optimize this?

Thanks,
-CT

I noticed this a lot when I tried using my old Trackman Marble FX (partly because it's old tech, maybe also because I didn't load a version of SetPoint that works for it.)

I bought a new Marble Mouse and didn't notice the problem. But I haven't used it for anything intensive.

One thing that messes up trackballs is mouse acceleration, which is always active in some versions of Windows even when you think it isn't. I used the info here and from some other sites to defeat it (try googling):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q149228/
Basically this allows you to set mouse speed high without acceleration sending it crazy whenever you flick the ball.

Having said that, if you have the right version of SetPoint loaded, it should be overriding those settings for you.
