Title: remapping caps lock to command on OSX
Post by: o2dazone on Mon, 28 September 2009, 20:06:27
Is there any method to remapping Caps Lock on a MBP to Command? I've successfully remapped control <--> command but the Modifier Keys option in System Preference ignores my Capslock -> Command setting...is there something I'm missing here?

Neverrrrrmind. I realized that with the HHKB plugged in, the Modifier Keys setting acts differently. Plug in the HHKB, set the keyboard you want to modify to "All" and swap Caps Lock with Command. I'll leave this here in case anyone else was bewildered like I was

Actually, there's a really easy way to do it.

You just go to System Preferences -> Keyboard and click the "Modifier Keys" button, and you can remap
Caps Lock, Control, Option and Command how you see fit. Also, you can select which keyboard to apply the remapping to.

This is for Leopard, and Snow Leopard, I don't know if Tiger or lower has the same functionality.

I did this in my first post. What I didn't notice, is that if you do this while an external usb keyboard is plugged in, it has odd effects.

Well, you do have to select the specific keyboard. I don't have any keyboards that are USB hubs, so I couldn't tell you how that misbehaves.

Indeed, very strange. None the less, glad I figured it out. If I have access to an HHKB, I'll be using that, but for when I'm on the road, bringing a keyboard around is more of a hassle than it is a joy. Now to bind \ to delete :P

System Preferences -> Keyboard -> "Modifier Keys" settings does not have any effect on my keyboard for some reason (tested on iMac and MBP). I had to make custom keyboard template with Ukelele in order to swap 'command' and 'option' keys. After all, my Realforce 105 is listed on "Modifier Keys" select box and that makes it even more odd 'cause the settings does not have any effect.

Though the remapping of caps lock key with Ukelele is not possible AFAIK due the stickiness of the key, so no victory there..
