Title: Driver woes....
Post by: C5Allroad on Tue, 23 June 2015, 13:00:55
So, installed nvidia drivers, 353.83 I think. No clue what the number is anymore. However, I did a restart after so I can get windows aero back, it never liked to come back after driver installs, but now, here's the part where it gets interesting. After I did the restart. The PC turned on, and then immediately turned back off, then back on. No display. No bios, nothing. I am in windows though. Both monitors stay in sleep mode and nothing happens.

It seems that this is a long known problem... (https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/648176/geforce-drivers/monitor-display-blank-screen-issue-after-driver-update-updated-1-23-14-/1/)

I can't even see the bios when I'm on HDMI...

Crazily the last post in that thread is that someone "fixed the problem" by using a 1ft HDMI cable vs. a 3ft cable...

Guess if all else failed you could get an adapter an run it from the mobo until fixed.

Tried to run hdmi to my TV, no juice.
Guess I'll try dvi again...

I had an issue once where my display would stay black even though the pc was on, I fixed it by unplugging the monitor from the wall and plugging it back in. Not sure if this will fix your issue though.

Glad it worked out.

I apologize for glomming onto your thread but I want to vent a bit and/or ask for help.

My son and I built a computer for him, which he wanted to dual-boot in Windows and Ubuntu. It is a relatively new-ish Gigabyte mobo with decent but not earth-shattering specs, everything else good solid stuff, new or only lightly-used, which would have been excellent gear 2-3 years ago but is mostly 2nd-tier now.

Everything booted up and worked perfectly with a new install of Windows 8.1, but Ubuntu 14.04 stubbornly refuses to allow me to get online.

I have the built-in on-board Realtek ethernet socket, a Tenda 322 wireless USB dongle, and a Linksys ethernet card to choose from. Windows sees them all and accepts them all happily.

Ubuntu shows the Linksys with the ethernet cable plugged in with the little double-arrow icon in the corner, but will not actually allow anything to connect, ie Google or sudo update. The others are recognized as "something" in the connection drop-down menu but will not actually hook up to anything.

I have been to the Ubuntu forums numerous times, but nobody seems to know how to fix it. Naturally, they want to see the outputs of lists and configs, but then none of them seem to have any actual answers. It is always "well, it SHOULD just work .... "

I have the discs that came with the hardware, but there does not seem to be Linux equivalents of "drivers" .....

I am a Noob here, any suggestions?

I'm afraid I'm no help in that aspect. Bit of a noob with Linux still. I haven't booted into Ubuntu since I've switched to Comcast. Not sure if that'll change anything.
In Ubuntu, is there a way to manually add a network?

I don't wanna say reinstall...

I would gladly reinstall Ubuntu. That will not be the problem.

A few years ago, when I got my laptop, it took hours of tinkering and aggravation to get the wireless to work.

Somehow, it seems like Linux chokes and refuses to work with even common standard networking hardware without a lot of pain.

I'll look into it. I'm stumped at that lol.
