Title: Best gaming keyboard unlimited budget, help!
Post by: Gaming on Wed, 24 June 2015, 00:13:56
:llama: :)So I am looking for the best gaming keyboard. This will be my first real keyboard, and I am coming from a Microsoft keyboard you get with the computer. Not: I live in the middle of nowhere. I drove 2 hours to Chicago to look in stores to test different switches but found nothing. Currently I feel that topre, red, or brown switches would be nice for gaming but I need your opinion. Please note that I do not want the keyboard that gives me the best bang for my buck. I want the keyboard that gives me the most bang for any amount of bucks :P. So just reccomend the bets keyboards here and please tell me which which switches to get if the keyboard model has different switches. I currently play chivalry (first person slasher) Cs go, tf2, data 2, lotro (mmo) and aoe 2 (rTs) thanks! Currently I really can't decide to counting on you guys!

I would look at the Razer Blackwidow Chroma (or Tournament Chroma which is a tenkeyless version) with Orange Switches

or wait for the Roccat Ryos MK Pro RGB coming out this Fall, you can research the Roccat Ryos MK Pro current version.

Some people really like the Razer Deathstalker Ultimate (or Steelseries Apex) with chiclet style keys. But I say go with a Logitech G13 or Razer Orbweaver before that....and get you a better typing keyboard.

There is also the Steelseries Apex M800 that's worth consideration, if you are looking to stick with a keyboard only solution and value mechanical switches.

Well the thing is that the *best* board might be a custom one. But then your choices get a lot more difficult. What layout, angle, or caps do you want on them?

Those can go from anywhere between $350 to $1000+ depending on your preferences.

Since you haven't put forth what you like except for a general switch type (and even then the range is pretty wide) I think most people on here would be uncomfortable telling you where to spend that much money.
It's a very personal choice.

Also, how much patience do you have?

What you want is a custom tenkeyless (TKL) keyboard, which is fully programmable, with an aluminum housing. LED backlighting would be nice to have. You also want customized switches, with your favorite stem, a custom weighted spring, and lubed with Krytox or RO-59.

Examples of this would be a KMAC, LZ-S, LZ-GH, LZ-FE, 356 DGE, 360 Corsa, etc.

I can't afford a 1000 dollar keyboard but I can afford 300 dollars or a bit more. I just want the regular key layout, 104 keys, preferably with the 10 key for extra coolness :P, and maybe some macro keys. I I would prefer a keyboard that faces me at about a 5-10 degree angle, and I am find with pretty much any caps as long as they feel solid. I have an almost unlimited budget but can't go splurging 1k on one.

Also, I would prefer to have a big keyboard. Not a 40% or something. I just think it looks better. Also I would like something that doesn't look like the standard ibm work keyboard. I would like it to look good, just a bit.

I play almost the same games as you. I am playing csgo (fps) and ff14 (mmo) right now.

The keyboards I am using right now is Ducky Shine 3 TKL Cherry MX Red and Filco MJ2 TKL Cherry MX Brown with thick PBT keycaps.

Now, I find myself type better on the Filco than the Ducky because I feel the browns are made to type. While gaming, I usually almost always use my Ducky because the linear motion really suits the key spams you are going to do. Once in a while I do a swap to my Filco for gaming just because I feel like it. The browns can be used for gaming too in my opinion, just that the reds are better since it is more responsive.

All this is my opinion and I hope it will help you out.

I think a topre board will also do very well for gaming since it is close to your "microsoft" rubberdome keyboard. Transitioning to a cherry mx board from a membrane will take a few days, at least for me. I am actually interested in trying out the Realforce since everyone in this forum recommends it. TKL version of course :D

So please don't use the word "unlimited", you would go bankrupt within a month on GeekHack  :))
My recommendation would be something like one of these :
- Ducky Shine 5
- Filco MJ2
- Leopold 750R
- KUL
Plus, you must find a decent keycap set. You need to try out whether ABS or PBT plastic is suitable for you. Definitely, you can find it on the classified or GB area.

I just really want topre but is it gonna work for gaming?
Also, I am willing to pay 500 for a custom keyboard so tell me about some of those please.

XD, I heard some people say it was good and some people topre was bad, but I am mixed.

- Ducky Shine 5
- Filco MJ2
- Leopold 750R
- KUL
KMAC
 LZ-S
 LZ-GH
 LZ-FE
 356 DGE
 360 Corsa

So this is my current list to look into. any additions? How expensive is it to make a custom keyboard? I don't want the best, just something I can be proud of.
Title: Re: Best gaming keyboard unlimited budget, help!
Post by: Air tree on Wed, 24 June 2015, 09:35:39
Korean customs aren't going to be any better for gaming than a Leopold 750r, but if you insist.

But topre wise a realforce 55g might be your best choice, MX wise, the hubble mira on the interest check sub forum is looking very interesting. And most other customs you'll find on the classifieds, you just have to keep an eye out and once you have enough posts, you can make a thread.

And topre is my favourite switch thus far, I'm wanting to get a hubble mira once it comes to market, and put some ergo clears into it.

This is how it starts. You don't know what you want so you buy a cheaper board to try whether it is clicky, tactile or whatever then you decide you don't like it so you buy another one etc, etc until you find what you like. Of course you'll have to stick around and participate so you build up your post count so you can then sell all the boards you don't like. OR just pile them up and be a hoarder like some of us.

There have been dozens of threads about gaming with topre https://www.google.com/#q=site:geekhack.org+gaming+with+topre (https://www.google.com/#q=site:geekhack.org+gaming+with+topre)

And you are just trolling yourself honestly it doesn't matter what keyboard you get for 'gaming' it has more to do with the user than the keyboard. Unless you need something like extra macro keys on one side or the other or if specific key backlighting would help you with the games you play.

The thing is not only are you going to want to buy a keyboard but then there are tons of aftermarket keycap sets to go with it. Then custom usb cables and don't even get started on artisan keycaps.

I will say pick the Ducky Shine 5 since I think you are the type that will like the shiny colorful LED on your board instead of the plain-looking old boring Filco. And pick red switch, trust me :D

Also, I would take some time and research everything before being so eager to throw $350+ at your monitor in a flash. We can't really know your tastes and what switch type you'd like. Korean Customs, Topre, stock boards (Filcos, etc...) there's a lot to think about and you should probably look at what switches you might like...

Take a look at this list I have here: Keyboards - Pearltrees (http://www.pearltrees.com/jaccow/keyboards/id5502169).

- I'm kind of partial to Déck (http://www.deckkeyboards.com/) with their doubleshot PBT backlit caps. Some people hate the font though.
- WASD keyboards (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/) have standard boards with some customization. They are one of the better quality ones.
- And if all else fails, MechanicalKeyboards.com (https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/search.php?switch_id=2&size=Full+Size&keyword=&backlit=on&in_stock=on) has a decent collection of fullsize models.

As for custom boards:
- GON has the GON NS NerD 108 (http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/custom-kbds-w-assembly/77-gon-ns-nerd-108-w-tuningassembly.html), starting at $485. But keep in mind he has a big backlog and it will take a few months for it to arrive.
- Datamancer.com has the Diviner (http://www.datamancer.com/cart/the-diviner-keyboard-p-204.html?zenid=aYAjIEznBRppH6xFe,P8c2) @ $500
- LZ (http://lzlife.tistory.com/), Duck0113 (http://duck0113.tistory.com/) and various other Korean builders have limited edition boards but those will be both hard and expensive to come by unless you are in the original GroupBuy.

A custom can get very expensive fast:
I'll do some calculations on my current board.
ItemCost
Orion set€354
SkiData keyboard for parts€91
Transparent keytops€31
Stabilizers & Stickers€26
USB cable€27
Various small parts & shippings€75
Total€604
(all prices in )
Now, I did add some more small things and splurged a bit here and there so the end result is a +$1,000 board. Starting from a base of $400

Backlit topre is coming soon they were shown recently at computex.

If you want to compromise get one or both of dante's royal kludge tkl boards (rgb backlit topre clone) he just put in classifieds, $85 each or both for $160 shipped conus.

So... you don't know what switches you like yet and you want to jump straight to the endgame of "gaming mechanical keyboards"?

I don't thank that's an impossible scenario, but it's highly unlikely. I'd suggest getting a board for around $100 to $120 with most of the features you want and MX Browns. Then you'll get a good feel for what type of switch you'd prefer.

In terms of feel:
Less tactility / more linear (if the bump irritates you) = Reds / Blacks.
More tactility = Clears / ErgoClears / Tactile Greys (they also have an earlier start to the tactile bump).
More "click" = Blues / Greens.

In terms of spring weights:
Same weight = Reds / Blues.
Just a touch heavier = Korean 62g springs -> ErgoClears.
Heavier = Blacks.
Much heavier = Greens / Tactile Greys / Linear Greys.

So I'd suggest a Ducky Shine 3 or 4 with Browns or the WASD Code with Clears. They all come in full size. Then take some time with it to figure out if the switches suit you or not and what you'd prefer in terms of both switch type and spring weights. It took me a while to figure out my favourite mechanical switch for gaming and typing (they've ended up being the same for me, but for some people they're different from each other). Also if there's some other characteristic of the switch you'd like to be different, that can be achieved through mods (such as adding orings, trampoline mod, switch stickers, latex mod, lubing, etc).

Another factor that I found made a big difference is going to TKL (or smaller, but TKL is the best "space gained" / "functions lost" ratio). It makes a big difference to be able to move the mouse and movement hands closer together and positioned more symmetrically. Also allows the centre of your typing position to be closer to the centre of your display, so you're not twisted more towards the left when typing. Good ergonomics. So, unless you really NEED a numpad, I'd suggest trying a TKL.

Long sorry short for switches: you'll never know what you like best until you try them all.
I thought browns were my best for gaming when I first researched years ago. Hate those switches!

Some people really like the Razer Deathstalker Ultimate (or Steelseries Apex) with chiclet style keys. But I say go with a Logitech G13 or Razer Orbweaver before that....and get you a better typing keyboard.

Guessing you've never dealt with Synapse before...

How has nobody mentioned the Romer G?

Wondering this too. For gaming, it's quite nice. I just type a *lot* more often than I game so I'd never drop the cash on the G910.

For strictly gaming, the G910 is a great choice.  It is definitely NOT a keyboard for other purposes however.  It is strictly made for that purpose.  Run the G910 with maybe a G303 (or similar) setup.  That would work.
It's really designed to be used in conjunction with your smartphone or tablet for games that utilize those features as well.  The macros are simple to program, and you have a lot of flexibility with the lighting.
All told, it may be an awesome keyboard for a gaming setup, but using it for a regular keyboard?  No.

Ok, guys, Maybe I should have said this but because of my current situation I HAVE ONE SHOT AT FINDING THE RIGHT KEYBOARD. I can not buy multiple ones, even if they are cheap. I have one shot at finding the best AND FIRST gaming keyboard for me so I can't just buy a $120 one. I need the bets ones you can come up with. Do you guys feel backlighting is necessary also? It just feels like extra price to me. So just give me one good, keyboard of your choice. Switches I want are topre/red/brown. I am find with a tkl but nothing too small.

Backlighting is not necessary at all, you have to inject some of your own thoughts into the matter.

55g Realforce 87u is a very good choice it seems.

The Korean custom is a good choice, it just matters for the most part what custom you think is most pleasing to the eye and the layout you most want.

The thing that can go wrong with the korean custom is you might find out you don't like whatever switch you chose.

It's very hard to recommend something like this.

I can't imagine why this is only a one shot scenario, but that's your thing I guess.

Whatever.  The Logitech has Romer-G switches which have a longer lifespan than an MX and are very responsive.  You wanted a mechanical keyboard and can't decide on MX or Topre, and INSIST on that?

AKA what would be a good topre keyboard for around $250? I can go a bit over, but not that much. Would an hhkb be good? or a realforce? Also is there any chance that the filco kb is better than this? Because after reading amzon review that blatantly said filco was worse than the u87 55g realforce I was swayed.

You have to make up your mind on some things. You said you wanted a full size at first, now you might want an HHKB?

https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards just browse.
https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=pfu_keyboards,hhkbpro2

Topre is vastly different than anything inside a filco, just make up your mind on some things, do you want topre or mx for starters, they aren't just like each other.

an leopold Fc750r is better than the filco. just FYI.

The HHKB is an 60%

All these boards are pretty high quality.

Dude, from the beginning I already said it is either Ducky or Filco for you. Realforce is designed for typing and it looks really plain and boring, you will not like it since you stated that you want something that looks good. Filco is really good for gaming because it is such a solid board, however if you want pretty looks then the Ducky shine 3 is better suited for you. Quality wise Ducky and Filco is about the same. They will last for a very long time.

Don't need to think about other brands since Ducky Shine 3 is the best one suited for you based on what you said in the previous posts. It is the best for gaming (TKL version). Full layout keyboard is not for gaming IMO.

And you do not want to get a HHKB since it doesn't have the F1-F12 buttons. In MMO games, those buttons are going to be very useful unless you are someone who mouse click their skill actions  :-X

Give it a thought between Ducky and Filco. Other brands or topre can wait after you tried Ducky or Filco board. Trust me, you will not settle with one board at the end of the day  ;D

Just believe me!

What information are you exactly looking for? You're just naming off a bunch of boards with little to no information at what you want, and you are expecting people to tell you get a board. You have to Make your own decisions.

We can only give you so much.

I don't think the Shine 5 is available yet, and the Shine 4 isn't available in a TKL model.

Stay away from Realforce / HHKB / Novatouch / Royal Kludge / Topre unless you like the feel of rubber dome switches.

So, again I recommend a TKL with reds. Ducky Shine 3, Filco Majestouch-2, or KUL ES-87.

or wait for the Roccat Ryos MK Pro RGB coming out this Fall, you can research the Roccat Ryos MK Pro current version.

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt.

So assuming you really do need a gaming keyboard.  I'd suggest you try a few cheaper board first.

Like everyone says switch feel is a very personal thing.  Though for gaming a good starting point is MX Red or MX Brown.  (MX Brown is a bit better for typing)

Now depending on your need, if you want LED:

Ducky Shine 4/5 (5 you have to wait), Ducky Legend (Cheaper than Shine but less LED modes), or WASD CODE (MX Clear and MX Brown only).

If you just want a good solid board to try out the switches:

Rosewill RK-9000V2 (supposebly fixed the connector issue), CM Storm XT, WASD V2, or Filco.

After having 3-4 boards under your belt THEN you can start looking for your ultimate board.

You gotta try a few different ones first before you know what you want.

Hope this helps.  :thumb:

TKL with reds then. Ducky Shine (not Zero) if you need backlighting. KUL ES-87 or Filco Majestouch-2 if not.

Yup. Not nearly as complicated as everyone is making it sound.

If you want a more familiar feel I think Realforce 55g Topre are amazing for gaming as well. Think I prefer Topre for RTS/MOBA over FPS though. Easier to strafe back and forth with linear Cherry (Red or Black) but the springiness of Topre make lots of rapid keypresses very nice.

You should focus more on getting a good mouse, mainly an optic one without any forced-acceleration or so, that will have more impact on your 'skillz' then a keyboard.
I use a Steelseries Rival and I'm VERY happy with it.

First of all, it is a matter of personal taste when it comes to keyboards.

We can assume that the worlds best player in some random game is going to have the best keyboard suited for gaming or for that specific game/genre, but in the end you might not like that type of switch/feel/size/setup.
From my personal experience and what everyone else is saying is that Cherry MX Red and MX Browns are the most commonly used for gaming with MX Red being somewhat in the lead even if MX Brown is more common these days.
Quality and brand does matter, for example the Ducky Shine 3 is more 'robust' then a CM Quickfire board. Stay away from Razer IMO.
LEDs is a personal thing. I find them distracting and also I'm afraid of LEDs dying after some time, can't be arsed to repair them myself or having to go through some warranty support.
Keysets and profiles is also a personal thing. Cherry and OEM profiles are the most common ones.

I use MX Brown and play A LOT of competitive games, mainly UT4. I think that MX Red feels to 'light' for me and I like the subtle bump in MX Browns.
I always use TKL sized keyboards because I never used numpads and it's a lot more ergonomic and faster to move your hand between the keyboard and mouse.
I recommend getting a Ducky keyboard with MX Red or MX Brown! Any model will do, Shine 3 is my favourite, size is up to you. :)

Yes, absolutely.

Firstly, you didn't listen to jd: He recommended a Ducky if you want backlighting AND recommended NOT getting a Realforce. Secondly, you spell Majestouch incorrectly. Thirdly, despite being advised by many to get a Ducky if you want backlighting, but you buy a Filco and then want to ADD backlighting? Fifthly, if you did a little research yourself (you know, put some effort into answering your own questions instead of asking stuff that's been answered before), you'd know you can't add LED's to a Filco.

So yes, very trollish... or just strongly ADHD.

he says he wants a good keyboard for gaming, and ppl are suggesting cheap plastic crap.

XD, I heard some people say it was good and some people topre was bad, but I am mixed.

- Ducky Shine 5

- Filco MJ2
- Leopold 750R
- KUL
KMAC
 LZ-S
 LZ-GH
 LZ-FE
 356 DGE
 360 Corsa

So this is my current list to look into. any additions? How expensive is it to make a custom keyboard? I don't want the best, just something I can be proud of.

+1 on these, one of these will cost you alot, but if you get into this hobby, you wont regret getting one of these. You should also get some board where you can change the switches without soldering(switch top removal, read about it).

and some more suggestions:

GON NERD TKL,
Kaliet,
Any Duck keyboard to your preference.

Take care of your eyes and they'll take care of you. Or something like that. You really should have some contrast-reducing ambient / back lighting to reduce eye strain. Which renders keyboard backlighting pointless.

I've heard of several people with Corsair boards that have failed LEDs... Even the RGB boards. That being said, it's an issue with just about all LED boards, and Corsair's RGB setup is arguably the best out there. I would go with the K70/K90 (5?) or I would use the Cherry MX Board 6.0 with Real-Key, if you want to be crazy about latency (or lack thereof) that you literally can't tell was there in the first place. Plus, the low profile caps are pretty cool. (I have one, and it's pretty good, but reds are weird to get used to if you're used to browns... Great keyboard though, and the aluminum top housing is excellent! Oh, and I love that some of the keys have double color LEDs.) Well worth the $200-$250, if it has what you're looking for. I bought one, and once I got used to the switches, I quite like it, although I do have to admit that I will be selling it and going for something like a Pok3r, and trying to put some LEDs on it. (Oh, and some blank PBT caps...)

Personally, I have the razer blackwidow chroma, and it is amazing.  After using some other keyboards at the local best buy, I personally find the blackwidow to be ranked lower after testing the other boards.  I say if you want something silent almost like a rubber-dome, (which I'm assuming comes with you pc}, you should get the new corsair strafe rgb with the new silent switch.  It would be really helpful, and since you like reds, I'm assuming you will like this because the mx silent is almost identical to reds, with the exception of no sound.

Have you considered a scissor switch keyboard with trackpoint?
Trackpoint instead of mouse is the future.
I read that Razer is already developing a new high end gamer trackpoint, coming summer 2016.
For unlimited budget buyers: RGB lightning, f**k yeah!
