Title: Hi, hello!!
Post by: Gmac on Sat, 11 July 2015, 00:29:18
Hi, I am new to the whole custom keyboard scene. So before I get started from the ground up, making a custom case for a pcb is what is the most common material that is used for the case itself. I know aluminum can be used, and I can find that in a scrape yard and melt it down into blocks and put it on a cnc machine. As for acrylic where is the best place to buy that? I've looked online but haven't managed to find a place to actually buy any.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Most common case material would probably be ABS plastic.  Or acrylic (are they different, my low level plastics knowledge is a little lacking).  Or perhaps aluminium.  It is amazing how many aluminium cases are appearing these days.

The best place to buy a case probably depends on the size, colour and style that you want, and those factors vary considerably across keyboards.

Check your local metal yard for aluminum stock.  They'll likely have scrap you can buy for cheap that's about the right size. It'd be way easier to find stock the right size than melting it down and cutting it into blocks.  You could also order the exact size you need from mcmastercarr.
