Title: Anyone know anything about this Model M?
Post by: Regal on Fri, 17 July 2015, 10:31:40
Just found a bunch of old keyboards at a university overstock place (again!).

1) A Model M 1390120

2) A working but dirty Model F (which I'm typing on now)

3) And 4 of a model that I've never heard of before that has some crazy keycaps. It's Model M 1399680 and looks like this (see attached pics that I hurriedly took, as I really had to go to the bathroom).

I already bought the first two (were selling each for $40 and gave me a pretty decent discount), but I was wondering if it would be worth it for the 4 Model M 1399680s? There're also $40 each, but I can probably talk them down to $30.

P.S. Those keycaps!

The old ones are nice because they have the heavy plates, but if they aren't 1390120s then they are probably terminal boards that will need a converter.

$40 is a little high for a terminal.

Thanks fohat for your fast reply. You're always on your game! I noticed they were terminals, but was hoping they were especially collectible or something. I have no idea what the university was using them for up till now...

I think I'll return the first one too, as I tested it out and there seems to be something wonky about the connection. But hey, $30 for a model f is a pretty great haul by itself!

Terminal conversions are pretty cool, considering I am using my 1392595 now.  You could buy a controller for them and an LED panel and overlay from Unicomp.  And you will need an SDL cable as well.  So figure that $30 terminal board will cost you about $20 for the controller, $10 for the LED panel, $1.50 for the overlay, and $15 for the SDL cable.   A total of about $46.50 plus shipping....

But worth it if you really really want to use it on your PC.  I have done several.

A couple Phosphorglow bolt-modded ones as well....

It's worth it to me.

Hmm, I'm tempted to do that Snowdog. Maybe I'll exchange the first one I mentioned for one of those and set it up. They are pretty darn cool, after all :)

My experience is that the heavy plates were used until at least early-mid-1987.

The 1390120 is a very nice keyboard in it's own right.  It can be used with your PC right away.  Did it come with the SDL cable?  If not, you may need one for it, and you're good to go.

Oh! I didn't see that reply you had to Fohat.  Nevermind.
