Title: the dumb purchases thread
Post by: bcredbottle on Thu, 23 July 2015, 13:18:02
What purchases are you regretting?

I'll start: $50 for two boards for caps I don't even like that much

Wow, I almost bid on one of those guys...

My dumbest purchase probably were 2 Model M for 35€ that came without a cable. They are still not tested, just cleaned.

In my opinion, I have only ever made 1 stupid keyboard purchase. I bought a white alps & dolch pcb w/ switches combined for 40$. I harvested the Dolch for switches, so it wasn't a total loss. But on the other hand, I have white alps..

I think my dumbest purchase was a vinyl rig which set me back about $1200 maybe 8 years ago - it has only ever played an album all the way through once in that time.

A couple of years ago I spent $100 on getting two of my favourite albums remastered on vinyl with the intention of starting to use it.  They're still sitting in the box they shipped in :-[

On topic: Some really no-no 3d printed keycaps from shapeways. Cost me almost $40 for 6 caps, and I ended up taking most of them off, except for 2 keycaps that I need on my blank HHKB to help find where the 5 and 0 are.

On the brightside, I won a nice pink swirl Fn from a raffle a few days ago, which matches quite well with the 5 and 0 pinks, so all is not lost. Credits to Roastpotatoes for the awesome work :D

My sis had one of these. OK for whipping milk or cream for topping cacao, but that's it. A method that is just as effective is to pour into a lidded jug and shake it until it is whipped.

Moral of the story, being alone allows more money for HHKBs

If whoever I marry isn't happy with doing most of the centerpieces and gifts ourselves and thinks that a wedding has to cost at least $30k, they're definitely not the one for me.  I don't get why some people insist on massive weddings.  I'd rather have $30k for a house downpayment or towards retirement than a wedding.

"Big" (up to a point...) weddings can be fun and can totally be done frugally if you try. Y'all are silly about some stuff.

My worst: 2 (2!) tek 475 o-scopes. Both have small issues. They weigh a ton, take up too much space (my home is 750sqft, no garage) and if I'm honest with myself I don't do the kind of work where cheap digital scopes "lie". The old ham would only sell the pair and wouldn't split them. I'd sell the things but everyone else is too smart to buy 2 analogue scopes with issues and a random complement of sometimes working probes.

At least I also got the service manual?

Have you tried real Alps?  Matias Alps have a lot more wobble and just don't feel as crisp or nice.  I also hate clicky switches, but give me a Model F, Blue Alps, or click modded Orange Alps any day over MX Blues.

I personally have white, orange, and dampened cream Alps. The orange Alps are from a IIGS and I used some of them on my 60% with your plate and hasu's PCB. I also have a 60% Infinity board with Matias Quiet Clicks. IME all Alps are wobblier than MX, so maybe I didn't notice the difference between Alps & Matias.

I prefer the white Alps over MX blue, but I also thoroughly enjoy the older MX blues on my Dolch PAC. I recently bought a bag of Gateron blues to swap out into a newer G80-1800. Hoping they feel more like the old blues in my Dolch.

which RF? if it's 55g, you're forgiven. ive been contemplating moving to a 55g RF lately. but the size =/

Demik's contemplating a non-HHKB board. Did I miss the apocalypse?

ive been pretty vocal about my love of 55g RF. and only board i'd cheat on my hhkb with

I have yet to try real Topre, partly because I don't want to find out you guys are right.

My first was the somewhat-less-embarassing Ducky Shine III, with white LEDs. Still a really solid board, on loan to a co-worker though so I never get to use it anymore.

Why would you buy that, such an acquired taste. For example mother makes child Vegemite sandwiches for lunch for school. Everyday child tells her he/she don't like it. She continues this for 6 years and child eventually learns that its the sandwich or nothing. 3 years later child learns to love Vegemite.

Ima go have a Vegemite sandwich now and get all nostalgic over school.

Vegemite with creamy smoked cheddar on toast is amazing though
I learnt to love it in the first year I lived in Oz

doesn't vegemite has a lot of nutritional benefit?

Bought a wedding once, still paying it off. Courthouse wedding apparently not appropriate in women's minds. Much regret. Could have used that money to fit my house out with HHKBs and secondary SSKs 5 per room.
my first wedding was the courthouse one and cost me 200 roubles. (it's about half a penny).

for my second wedding (with church, restaurant, photo session and stuff) i got so much money in gifts that it paid off.

Vintage lenses from e-Bay. Some were great but I have a few moldy and useless bellows lenses that I can't even use.

My girlfriend was laughing at me yesterday for all the expensive outdoor gear that I have but never use. She actually stole half my gear to use this summer on her trip. XP
I've got like... how many €400+ Gore-Tex jackets? Three... and a half?

I want to buy a certain tent now but if I do I have to take her camping more often.

I used to have the same problem.  I realized that I beat up outdoor gear so much that it was better for me to buy the cheap stuff that did the exact same thing as the expensive stuff.  For example, keeping water off my body.  Solution:  http://froggtoggsraingear.com/Hiking.shtm

With outdoor gear, there is a point where the ultra lightness of an item no longer is worth the price.  Kinda like Korean customs and rare buckling spring keyboards.

Tested out them costco pans..

Pretty good..  heats quite evenly..

Didn't need to use much oil..

I deliberately just let the eggs sit and fry without disturbing them..  They still slid right out of the pan with no prod-ing..

So overall.. works on eggs..     I will try frozen dumplings tomorrow which is much worse when it comes to sticking..  high difficulty test..

I'm just really not hungry right now, can't really put down any dumplings...

Yeah, I figured that out after destroying 2 expensive jackets (which were thankfully refunded under warranty). Jackets and trousers need to be sturdier in my case. And I don't mind the extra weight on those. Not if it means I can rely on them.
It helps that I work at a large outdoor retailer so the discounts make it much more viable to buy the expensive stuff. But it did made me realize these were made for a reason.
A $700 jackets is damn cool but it is not much more durable than a $400 jacket. Just more suited for the job.
If you're thrashing about a $100 (or cheaper) jacket might be a much better fit for you than the expensive stuff.

But seeing as how those are often my daily jackets and I'm European I want them to look good too. :D

Mine was an X8. We all make mistakes :P

In reality, it's not that terrible a board, I mostly just dislike the nonstandard bottom row. It taught me that backlighting is overrated, and that browns aren't the switch for me.

Purchase I regret the most at the moment is probably my SSK, because I haven't had nearly as much of a chance to use it as I wanted.

Didn't realise it was a stupid purchase until recently but I'd have to say my Hammer knock off case. The angle on it is far too pronounced, I always kind of felt like finding the right keys was a little difficult on it but it wasn't until I started using my other 60% that I realised how bad it is. Hoping I can find someone to swap it for one of Feng's current 60% cases because I'm pretty much done with new purchases now that I've got a couple of customs.

EDIT: Add lubed 62g clears and unclipped Cherry stabs. My new board feels a million times better with unlubed 62g clears and the stabs clipped.

7 Days to Die...

Was persuaded by a friend to get it. It's kind of interesting at first when you're trying to survive long enough to actually care about collecting stuff for crafting, but then when an update hits and it makes your previous saves unusable and you realise how much time you're just throwing at what's really an unfinished and quite rubbish game... deleted.

Oh also with the X9 I bought the MadCatz M.M.O.7 too, which broken itself after just half a year of use. MadCatz's sensor is just a joke.

The Tournament Editions have a good sensor. And the RAT3's (both optical and laser). All the others are pretty bad, sensor-wise. Not sure about the side button quality on the MMO TE, but the standard TE seems well worth the money.

My wife threw out my jar of Marmite (South African Vegemite-equivalent). Was a upset, but I've survived without since. You're right, it's great with cheese.

I had a little too many old-fashioneds this weekend and started going to different online skate shops and viewing reissue boards and playing with their custom build thingies.

well...my last drink probably had a little too much sugar in it and I ended up buying one of the custom builds. ><'

I'm not even sure it's a good price..  but I'm thinking,  it's windforce, so that's good,  it's on par with a 280x which is still slightly above $150..

My thought is that $250 is sort of a weird spot... cards like the 290 and 970 are a bit above it... but I'd rather have a single robust card than a SLI setup-- you'll get a bigger usable framebuffer, less software hassle, and almost certainly more power/heat/noise efficient.

My thought is that $250 is sort of a weird spot... cards like the 290 and 970 are a bit above it... but I'd rather have a single robust card than a SLI setup-- you'll get a bigger usable framebuffer, less software hassle, and almost certainly more power/heat/noise efficient.

I'm not sli-ing

I need one 670 for momputer, and another for broin'law'puter

IME, 'momputer' has been fine with IGP. I'm not 100% up on how much GPUs are worth, but that seems reasonable to me. I thought 670 was on par with 280, not 280X, but I guess it depends on applications. 280X has 3GB IIRC, so barring memory limitations they might be on par.

Magic: The Gathering is the ****ing worst. I have so much money tied up into that TCG and I can't do anything with it. It takes too much time to sell singles and you end up losing a ton of money selling in bulk.

Everytime I go the Monoprice site....ugh..

Ok,  so I needed a displayport to hdmi and a displayport to duallink-dvi  adapter  ..

$30 + $10 shipping ...  easy..

THEN,  i saw the $10 off 50 coupon.. and I'm like wow, if I just BUY MORE STUFF..

then I'm like,  wow, look at this hdmi cable ONLY $5.. buy 2 ,

Wow look at these 10 feet USB to mini-B cables,  I could use some for mah-ergodox and my fiio d3. buy 3

Then I saw, WOW 35feet Pink Cat6a STP cable for $5... Hell yea..

Before you know it.. Final out the door price $55..

I overspent by $15,  which is... 38% more than I prolly needed..

sigh.............................

I'm so weak against monoprice... (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/7f5341cc.gif)

I hate Monoprice's USB & HDMI cables. The molded connectors are huge, and the HDMI cables have those giant ferrite cores. They don't fit anywhere. And I've had them break a lot. I always spend just a bit more for Amazon Basics, which is even cheaper and faster since I have Prime anyway.

Well I need those things to get stuff done..

Hippie communes may be simpler,  but they're horribly unproductive because they're divorced of modern society.

The goal is to live SIMPLY,   but hipster communes live APART..

For me, I may be physically apart,  but with 10Gbit,  I am still part of the collective.

WHY Can't we just raise babies in the internet shack I proposed..

Relative to their size.. the Internet shack will still be HUGE and plenty of space..

And once they get ONLINE @ age 2 or 3,   They won't need ANY physical running space..

They got the Entire internet..

Ok.. so when you have the baby you construct IN the shack, a small sound dampening and ventilated segment,  with an Auto rocking crib..

Problem solved..

Apparently this does happen quite often, and that is dumb.

The putty was probably the most fun.

The butterfly in a jar was really stupid. They photoshopped out the wire in the videos but it's painfully obvious in person and gets stuck often.

The chameleon thing was meh. Didn't color match well.

I got a BBQ sear imprint from them and it didn't work.

I resold everything for pennies on the dollar.

Also, I just spent nearly $200 on a set of keycaps. Keycaps! How preposterous is that

Maybe you could come up with a new recipe for retr0bright, based on benzoyl peroxide.

I have used benozyl peroxide-based acne cream on leather items to make "highlights" where they will look worn.

The only effective treatment (age 13-21) for acne is Large volumes of exercise, followed by SPACED-out-intake of all your Refined carbohydrates.

The cause of acne comes from WITHIN,   the creams might help a bit,  but it does not treat the source of the problem..

Also, avoid hormonal treatments at all cost, it's really bad for you, and probably gives you cancer.
