Title: Request for a video demonstrating the Realforce spacebar removal procedure
Post by: rf87 on Fri, 24 July 2015, 03:35:08
A number of us purchased the Topre PBT spacebars from a group buy on Massdrop that Matt3o was so kind to set in motion and execute.

Being fairly new to Topre keyboards, I am unaware of the manner in which their spacebar should be removed. I found several videos on YouTube showing similar procedure for other kinds of mechanical keyboard, but none for a Topre.

I was wondering if somebody could possibly do a video demonstrating the method to remove a Realforce 87's spacebar. Any other Realforce with an ANSI layout will suffice as well. I am requesting a video with Realforce as I do not know whether a HHKB's spacebar is stabilized in the same way. I realize that there is not a lot of science to the thing, but I do not want to damage my keyboard due to a lack of knowledge.

You pull it off?  Not sure why you are asking.  Its very simple, and yes they are the same.

For simple tasks like these, you could get a quick answer by posting in the simple questions thread  :thumb:

Just pull it up on both sides and wiggle.

just watch out for the spring so you don't lose it. a separate video for taking off a topre spacebar would be unnecessary.

good luck with your keyboard undressing

Like with many things, the first time you try to remove one will be the worst.  Second time - much easier.  Third time and you'll be like meh.

I do this with Alt cap on both sides removed:

- use a keycap puller and hook both wires around one edge of the spacebar with one hand
- put the other hand or a finger on the spacebar, while applying light pressure
- pull the side up until it pops off the stabilizer stem
- pushing down with the other hand prevents the keycap from bending or breaking the switch stem or the other stabilizer stem to which it's still attached
- repeat the same on the other side
- now the key cap should only be attached to the switch stem in the middle
- pull the keycap off with my two index fingers while resting my thumbs on the bottom edge of the case

At this point the spring around the switch stem usually jumps out and then I'm searching for it on the floor for the next few minutes :P

Thank you for sharing that procedure ileben! Especially, that bit about pushing down on the key with the other hand. I wouldn't have done that.

Seems pretty straight forward why he's asking. Because he doesn't know and is afraid of ruining his board.
