Title: Artisans from Tasker's shop on Shapeways (The Gizmo Bazaar)
Post by: Wuzadi on Sat, 25 July 2015, 18:36:02
Just wanted to share some pics of the artisans I got from Tasker's shop on shapeways. Sorry I don't have the best pictures for these, taken on a iphone 5c lol.
Really loving the mask, a lot of detail within the mouth portion. Big diablo fan here, so I couldn't pass that up :)
Thanks again for the caps Tasker! ;D

Tasker's keycaps are pretty amazing, I think a lot of people haven't cottoned onto how large his range is and some of the cool materials they're available in.

Here's a few examples.

Do you have pictures of the real keycaps? They look interesting

It doesn't help when those first two caps are literally bingecap designs.

Lol noticed that too. You can check out his shop, there's really a wide range of designs. I have to say tough, these caps are nice and snug to the mx stem once applied. No wobbling at all. Btw thanks for the iron man Nubs just came in yesterday.

Hi Wuzadi. Thanks a lot for ordering these, I'm really glad you like them. Is it ok if I share your pictures on twitter or my shop?
Thanks also to Bosk for the kind words and to anyone who isn't aware, Bosk does some really cool custom keycap paintjobs, you should check them out!
Jerr there are quite a few pictures on my shop if you're interested, I also posted some in the artisan services board like this one:

lol, thanks nubbinator, although I was aware of bingecaps I genuinely hadn't spotted those similar designs. I do hope no-one thinks I ripped them off (I'll admit, the hand does look extremely similar but I'd like to think that you can see the difference in my Cthulhu design!)

Yes of course! I actually have an artisan from a well known shop (won't say where) and these are much more stable on the mx stem then the others. Definitely will be ordering more. Feel free to share pics! I can try to get some better ones with my girlfriends camera for you :P

I don't see a problem with this.  The concepts are things I drummed up, but keythulhu was a design that other cap makers were kicking around at the time as well.  I just got mine to production.  You have my blessings man... not that you need them, but I support individual expression of a concept.  If you're ever up for teaching any of your 3D techniques please let me know.  I am looking for someone to teach me so I can be ready for the coming and inevitable ruin of traditional sculpting on a small scale. :p

On the subject of keycap makers borrowing designs, I think a line should be drawn between taking inspiration from the work of other artists -something as old as art itself- and flat out intellectual property theft as evidenced by K3KC's casts of Brocaps.

Like Binge I also think its a pity 3D printing is destined to supersede miniature sculpting by hand, perhaps even sculpting as a whole.. but something tells me there will always be a demand for art created via traditional methods just as there's still a demand for wet-printed photos or mechanical watches. 3D printing will entice more kids to try sculpting for themselves too.

I whole-heartedly agree with that. 3D printing/modelling is great because it gives butter-fingered guys like me the chance to create what we want to create. I know that I could probably 3D print almost exact replicas of other people's designs, but that's always felt a bit icky to me. Like, what's the point if you're not actually creating anything new?? (or in the case of my hand and cthulhu caps, things you think are new  ;) )

Thanks Binge, that's a very honourable standpoint. I'd be more than happy to teach you about 3D techniques. I don't think you have to be too worried about 3D printing though. It is certainly growing but it'll take a while to reach the masses and even then, as Bosk says, I don't think it'll ever get rid of traditional techniques like sculpting etc.

Artisinal goods are handcrafted goods by definition.  3D printed is not handcrafted.  So, by definition, it's impossible to have 3D printed artisinal goods.

There's definitely art in the actual design of these caps, but yeah, whether it be bread or cheese or keycaps, artisanal products are made in a non-mechanised way.

I can definitely see where everyone is coming from with that, and I know 3D printing is nowhere close to casting in terms of quality and artistry, so I obviously don't expect anyone to hold them to the same high regard.

Methinks this is a good idea

There's definitely artistry in 3D modeling and in properly finishing 3D printed caps, I was just pointing out that, by definition, it can't be called artisinal.

just CAD design and CNC the molds and then move to resin.

I'm actually moving to resin slowly, and using 3d prints as the master.  They're high enough quality, and cheap enough, that I can print multiple and pick the absolute best outcome.

Wait, I just read through this thread again and I have no idea who's actually making these, is it; XX7, Tasker or Wuzadi?

The caps I posted are from Tasker. I'm actually waiting for a megatron cap I told XX7 to surprise me with the coloring :P. I don't caps, but I like to show the art from all the makers I buy from.
