Title: Need suggestion for good tenkey...
Post by: Xichekolas on Tue, 06 October 2009, 17:30:08
So I have a Filco tenkey-less with blues, and so far I'm loving it (it's my first mechanical switch since I was a kid, so it feels like being a kid again).

While I really enjoy having my mouse so much closer, I miss having a tenkey pad. Before, I used the tenkey for gaming and the occasional spreadsheet. As such, I think clicky switches would just be annoying (especially to my girlfriend, who already doesn't appreciate 8 hours of Battlefield). I've tried using the WASD, but it's just not the same as the nice neat tenkey columns.

Anyway, I need suggestions for what to get, both switchwise and actual models. I hear lots of people say "get a linear switch for gaming" ... but I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means. I play maybe once a month, so I want something that's also comfortable when I have Excel open. Also, it'd be nice to keep this under $50.

For an intermediate-price solution, there'd be the Cherry G80-3700 (normally with blacks) and G84-4700 (ML) numpads. Provided you can get them, of course.

My problem with that Filco is the 00 key. I like having the big fat 0.

Damn, those are pretty pricey.  My GF is looking for a tenkey, but I think she might be getting the $15 Cherry black special, or something with scissor switches.  She doesn't really appreciate keyboard quality the same way we do here.  It's a shame, but at least I don't have to spend money on keyboards for her.

The ebay auction ripster linked to has ended. Is there some other place to get this $15 special, because it is tempting...

There's a bunch of listings for the same item on eBay. They seem to be from different fronts for the same China-based company.  Ripster just updated his thread for them in eBay Listings that points to a fresh listing.

Cherry G80-3700 - $70 for lasered version, $100 for dual shot. (http://www.barcodeplanet.com/cherry/g80-3700.htm)  Spendy critters here in the US and I suspect they are out of stock but haven't updated listings.

If you're gonna spend $100 for the Cherry, you may as well spend $128 and get the the Topre Realforce 23U.  http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf_numberpad&pid=rf_wc0100 (http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf_numberpad&pid=rf_wc0100)

I have the Filco FKB22MB which uses Brown Cherry MX switches, but I prefer the feel of the Topre key switches.  Besides, it matches my HHKB Pro 2 and Realforce 87U.

If you decide to drop $128 on the Realforce 23U, why not spend an additional $4.50 and get a red Esc key.

Personally I think numpads should go click, click, click. The more tactile and audio feedback the better.   Unfortunately, the Scorpius Blue Cherry keypad is too big for my taste and I'm also in the camp that you want a big fat zero key.

The ione Scoripus-32 goes click, click, click, and it has a big fat zero key.  Unfortunately, it's also the size of a small keyboard.  I have two NIB that I will put up for sale on the classified section.

That's the one I've got with the fake Cherries, and the arrow keys, right?

Yikes. But yeah, G80-3700s are like 40..50€ here, so $70 seems about right. (The H... types are likely to be old stock.) G84-4700s are about 10 less. In any case that would still be in between the $15 special sans stabilizers and the $$$ Realforce.

If you like having the mouse closer but still like the number pad and clicky keys, why not see if you can find an M13 somewhere?
