Just got back from der Microcenter...  Sry everyone I didn't die.. (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/sillyp1.gif)


UD5H   vs  Gaming 7

6 true phase + doubler (12choke)  ,  UD5H

vs

8 true phase, no doubler (8chokes) , Gaming 7


I went with the gaming 7... it's $124 after rebate, pretty solid..

The UD5H is $130 after rebate

4690k for $200.. meh...

Which colour goes best with the build? ;)

Other than that, it's about practicality. How many SATA ports, position of PCIE ports, number of USB 3 ports on the back, etc etc

Well,, it's geared towards "kids now."

So, it's whatever they think is necessary,  which is m0re SLI,  even though only small portion of the population can actually afford SLI..

I definitely think there are less SATA ports. I think that because optical drives are getting less popular, and HDDs and SSDs are both growing in size, manufacturers seem to think we need less SATA ports. You will be very lucky to get more than 6 full speed SATA ports on any mid range mobos today.

And, like you say, if you want mATX/mITX mobo with more than FOUR SATA ports, you've gotta be REALLY lucky.

The only thing that matters on motherboards  is   Power delivery, Overclocking,  and Bios design/stability..


That is it..    NOTHING else matters,  it's all fluff..  like fog-lights... YOU don't need um.

power regulation is actually handled by the CPU nowadays.

the mobos are there to route, not to control the 'quality' of power (much simpler task overall).  the bar is VERY low; you're mainly buying circuitry that has a long enough lifespan rating, not the best throughput.

it's like saying that you need a good mobo before you can OC a gpu

You still need to be able to handle 200-250 watts at low temperatures,  that's only possible with M0re vrms.

It's a diminishing returns trade-off. Beyond a certain point you're putting in too much effort for too little reward. This point is entirely personal and based on:

1. your enjoyment of the process itself.
2. the actual real-world performance increase.
3. your perceived value of the performance increase factored over the lifetime of the system.
4. the time and effort put in balanced with your current salary and time availability.

When I was a student, every Hz counted, I had the time, no salary, enjoyed the process and valued the increase more since it meant getting closer to a decent FPS in the twitch games I used to play on my "out-of-date but all I can afford" hardware.

Nowadays I don't bother to put nearly as much effort in, but get around 90% of the way to the increase I would achieve with student-level effort.

Oh and... WATERCOOLING! ... with a large radiator, large diameter tubing, quiet high-flow pump and big slow fans.

Many of the 12v ones sold for PC's are quite noisy, but there are tricks that help. My current one is standard 12v mounted with silicon tubing so the vibrations don't transfer to the case.

The best quality ones are quieter than a case fan when you mount them properly. I like to use mains voltage aquarium circulation pumps (submersed in the reservoir) on a relay. Quiet, high flow rate, designed for permanent operation, job done.

Then again, I do have quite an "industrial" approach. I have a car radiator on my current PC. Big surface area requires lower air flow rate so I can use a big slow fan.
