Title: Model F is the MX blue's father???
Post by: snarfarlarkus on Wed, 29 July 2015, 01:48:47
Just received my Model F XT... All I can say is WOW! I thought the Model M felt good... The F is on a whole new level. I'm typing this with my 87U 55g and although it is buttery smooth and a heck of a lot quieter, it just doesn't feel quite as nice as the Model F. I am posting this because I just realised something... To me, the Model F almost feels like the 'father' of a MX blue??? It feels lighter than a Model M and very similar to a MX blue but with the pingy-goodness. Hopefully my AT that is arriving soon feels like this XT too. Anyone else feel the same how the Model F almost feel like a blue or is it just me??

It makes no sense for it to be its father, the mechanisms are completely different from top to bottom. In fact the whole idea of Cherry switches is pretty much orthogonal with that of capacitive buckling springs.

I got an IBM Model F AT 84 recently too, but I don't feel it's like cherry mx blue switches.
For one thing, you will notice that Model F's actuation point is much deeper than that of mx blue.
And Model F is further crisper, more smooth, and its metallic reverberation is larger.

I meeant more-so in feel not how the switch was made or functions. it feels like an mx blue to me with more travel time and more crispness. MX Blues although a completely nother switch feels like a 'shallow' version of the Model F but that could just be me haha.

Comparing Cherry switches to buckling springs is sheer blasphemy.

MX blue is a lame copycat wannabe at best.

Maybe MX Greens. Not MX Blues.

That being said, different switch mechanisms so yeah, it's not that close.

If anything, it should be like this:

Beamspring/DisplayWriter > F > M > M2 > that weird buckling sleeve switch

Buckling Spring (Model M)

Though in my experience - pressing a Model F switch against an MX Green switch, the Green actuates before the F, and during release - the F resets before the Green.

There really isn't a father to the MX blues. Their mechanism is completely different from their predecessors. MX blues are really just linear switches that have been manipulated to simulate a true tactile clicky switch. They can't even be compared to alps.

buckling sleeves feel more like domes than anything... wouldn't even consider them to be in the same category as any of the spring switches...

i can agree with this

Buckling springs feels 'organic' compared to the plastic feeling that mx blue has.

It helps a little bit that the keycap is in direct contact with the metal spring.

It is a true offspring of the M then. M got so famous, buckling sleeve couldn't be about that life, decided to set about it's own path and lost its sprunk.

For some reason I thought it had a spring sticking out of it like the IBM keyboards, but apparently not so this is good to know  :thumb:

Uh-oh, Snowdog's not going to like this... I think I'll clear out of here before he turns up.  :?)

As for what Snarf meant about the relationship between the Model F and Cherry blues: I don't think he was making an analytical, scientific observation, but rather a more experiential one—like comparing how one feels when experiencing the works of two artists. It's just as legitimate.

It's interesting and fun to know about hardware's discrete physical properties, but the people who use it are also an important part of the equation, and you omit them at your own peril. Okay,  just wanted to wind up by saying something dramatic and artsy-craftsy.

The use of imperial units on the IBM chart clearly establishes its superiority.

We got to the moon inch by inch, not cm by cm.

EDIT: your username quote bug is still a thing.

Thank you! That's exactly what I meant. I didn't even remotely consider how the switches were made or functioned but moreso on the feel and of the switches. After a few days now, I am stilll loving the Model F but I the cherry mx just feel too light and not as 'organic' as the model f. I am still leaving my 87U 55g plugged in and use it at night as its quieter. Coming straight from the model f, the 87U is buttery smooth and not as aggressive but more-so slick and sublime which I quite like. Still better than the Model M.

Everyone has their own view and comparisons.  It's what works best for you that matters.

I know what works for me.  *WEG*
