Title: Life after GeekHack
Post by: Melvang on Sun, 09 August 2015, 01:06:32
Have you ever thought about what you would do for a hobby if/after you find your end game board/sell off all but necessary keyboard stuffs?

I have actually thought about this as I feel I am very close to my end game board.

I think my next hobby is going to be RC cars/trucks.  Though I don't know what side of things I would like to go.  I think the aspects that appeal to me the most are either electric/gas rock crawling, electric drift, or just large gas trucks.

You can still have end game keyboard and another new hobby and yet hang out in Geekhack. It doesn't have to be life AFTER Geekhack.

I will probably just thin out my collection when I get what I feel is my endgame boards and I've experimented with everything.
Sell off all the boards lower quality boards and keycap sets I don't like that I've gotten on my way to endgame, but I doubt I will quit entirely as there will always be nice new keycap sets that I will want.
You can always hang out and take it easy with the spending but still buy things occasionally. This hobby isn't so bad as others with having to constantly spend money to keep up.

Probably go down to one board and my favourite artisan or two, and move to another hobby.

That would be a career change, not a hobby.

Though if I did go to college it sure as hell wouldn't be accounting.  I would go for some sort of engineering.  Either mechanical, electromechanical, or something aviation.

Um... I'm not against engineering etc..   I like technology as well..

But I do want to point out ,,  that accounting and finance CAN be engineering like, depending on your approach..

There are the pencil pushing parts,   but ultimately you are Engineering the Ways-to-steal-people's-money.

---- This is a very real job..      There may be less physical substance,  but the principles behind the task and all subsequent problem-solving are equivalent.

For example,  Programming..  it's all on a screen,  but like engineering there is room to create should you choose to.

I used to be very active over OCN, since I was into PC modding/water cooling so bad last time
than I got my end game , hang out for a while and now not active at all now

my guess is I would find that new hobby and that new place to hang out

I think Tp4 is a perpetual principle, a successor will emerge in time.

I always wonder when I'll just stop coming to Geekhack. I kinda don't like thinking about it. I just think how much I'll miss all you guys.

I've grown attached to all of you. I don't want to leave.  :'(

Just like everything else I've left in life (school, college, uni, jobs, karate, other forums...) when the time comes I'll just go, without hesitation.  It's highly unlikely I'll keep in contact with anyone after and any kind of reunion or request from an individual for a catch up will be met with so little enthusiasm they don't bother to try and convince me it's a good idea.  I still have multiple pairs of headphones and a couple of amps, some cable making supplies which have sat unused for years since my head-fi days so don't even expect a clearout sale.  I will probably sell off my artisans to free up some funds and because they are in limited supply so it would be mean to hoard them.

What's next?  Probably some kind of silent ranged weapon I think - crossbows or throwing knives/axes.

Most of the stuff I've left behind is no longer available to me.

It was sad parting with some of it, and a relief to get away from other parts.

Should GH and I be parted, I suspect the feeling will be as the former rather than the latter.

However, no plans to depart just yet :p

I used to be into RC trucks and cars. Me and my buddy were modding brushless motors and playing around with aircraft li-po batteries before any of the companies started to catch on.

Honestly i don't really see myself picking up new hobbies but i kind of cycle around back. For example i've been gaming a lot more recently as well as modifying my car.
As for GH i'll probably always pop my head in every once and a while because i always did love the forum format of socializing online but all the forums i joined weren't interesting enough and the one that i really liked, everyone ended up leaving because they got into a car accident or sold the car, it wasn't a bad car but it had horrible aftermarket support.

This.

If you like it here, stay. If you want to leave, go. What's it matter what keyboards you have or what Clacks you have? Conversely, what's it matter if you leave? Nothing wrong with moving on or staying because you like it here. It's not that big of a deal. Don't over think it.

Probably would focus on something that makes money rather sucks money.  At least that I've been saying for a year or so.

On another note, anybody know some good keyboard rehab clinics?

Bills is the best clinic.

Buy some high dollar **** that's important and see just how quickly you'll stop buying keyboards due to lack of money.

In my experience,  usually,  when people get a first "serious" girlfriend,   they withdraw from INTERNETZ...

But after the Magic period is over, ~3 months,   They come back to escape the Girlfriend, where Mucho Nagging has-engaged.

I've been a part of a few things like being a mod on some game servers and forums, and I use to spend 24/7 playing games with the other mods, but then slowly stopped because of my girlfriend (as TP4 said).

I came back to the games but when I did everyone slowly lost interest, so I left as well.

With GeekHack, I find myself slowing down a bit once I see less interesting things to buy or have at least one of each thing. I'll sell off stuff I don't like too much and keep the good stuff.

I'll come back time to time since it's not a time commitment to be on here, but I won't be fully gone unless I just don't care any more.

I doubt I'll pick up any hobbies, but continue to do what I do with computer and electronics, but just at a smaller scale.

My girlfriend is okay with my keyboard spendings and we live together, so I have the freedom to do as I please. I don't think I'll drop off the face of the earth, but I might just end up being busy and come around from time to time when I'm free.

I found some boards I was happy with a while back and took a little break from GH.  Then I came back when I needed a new board and saw all that I had missed.  Then I vowed to NEVER leave again!
