Title: keycaps height problem
Post by: wangdora on Mon, 10 August 2015, 09:44:47
hello i just bought ducky shine 4, to replace my logitech g100s keyboard

and the problem is, ducky shine 4 has a pretty high keycaps , and when i play cs:go or dota2 , my hand quite often accidently press CTRL keys.

(maybe it is because i used g100s which has low profile keycaps)

and i need Lower Profile CTRL set keycaps.

does anyone has any recommendation for CTRL set keycaps that fits in ducky shine 4? (of course lower height compared to ducky OEM keycaps), and also is translucent for my LED

thanks a lot. (sorry for my bad english)

Jason

There are no really good quality, low profile backlit (translucent) caps, except perhaps for the ones on the new Leopold boards.

If you're in such a dark environment you need backlighting to see the legends, you should turn some lights on anyway. It's not good to have a bright screen and dark everywhere else, the high contrast is bad for your eyes.

So, if you give up the need for backlighting, there are lots of keycap sets to choose from. The lowest profile that is still "sculptured" (different height and angle across rows) is Cherry profile. GMK keycaps are Cherry profile. Signature Plastics DCS profile is quite similar, but the bottom two rows are more steeply angled. DSA profile is also low, but it is not "sculptured" and has spherical tops instead of cylindrical.

In general, mechanical keyboards are taller than most rubber dome boards and this can be a problem in the beginning, until you realise that for normal typing you should not have any part of your hand touching the desk. For gaming I recommend getting a piece of wood or similar material that you can rest the hard "heel" of your palm on so your wrist stays straight while playing since it's hard to keep it raised for long periods without support. If you do this, you won't need to change keycaps.

They are not exactly Ctrl keys, but Portal 1.25x modifiers: http://www.maxkeyboard.com/products/cherry-mx-keycap/backlight-keycap-mod-packs.html

Doesn't say if they are OEM profile or not.

rowdy, your post reminded me of these: http://www.originativeco.com/collections/keycaps/products/portal-polycarbonate-modifiers

They're Signature Plastics DCS profile, so they're lower profile than the OEM keycaps on the Ducky and they allow the backlight to shine through (although they have the white "grid" that blocks some of the light). They will fit on the Ducky Ctrl keycap spaces and may be low enough to make a difference.
