Ive been looking into the ergodox for a little while now, and Im still just unsure about it. Do people generally like it? Ive heard people have a hard time with tenting and the thumb cluster. Whats your thoughts?

For me, it's the best keyboard currently available in the market, because it's not only split, but also rich in thumb modifiers (the 80key version, to be specific).
Print out a template of the layout, and play with it a bit.

It's my only keyboard at home. I use it for gaming. If you have average-to-large size hands you should enjoy it.
The newest version recently available on Massdrop appears to have a few advantages over the first generation. Check it out.

Making mine ALPS compatible (WIP). Not the best layout possible, but is the best layout that's readily available and mass produced (quite a few cases exist for it as well).
Split is just more ergonomic.

Not really, everything aside from the screen has either been done already or isn't worth it. And I'd rather have something known to work and not have a screen which I may look at once or twice a year rather than something not tested from a company known for screwing up and with firmware that's very overcomplicated just because of the screen.
And for crying out loud it's not "the newest version", it's just a crappy fork.

Um... OK.

Some people find that the thumb keys are a bit too far, but that is really different for different people.
I have attached a file with the ErgoDox's layout. Print that at 100% and test for yourself!

In the current absence of an updated 'dox I think it's still one of the best options available. Just be aware that you may have the desire to make your own custom board after you've spent a lot of hours on it.
Plenty of updates exist but none have really become widely accepted yet.
