Title: Come Monday...
Post by: nubbinator on Sat, 12 September 2015, 15:48:11
I will officially be student loan free.  I know most of you probably don't care, but it's huge for me.  It's nice to no longer have that starting $30k in unforgivable debt with ridiculous interest (5-8.25%) hanging over my head.

Congrats is certainly in order. This **** sucks.

Once I graduate, I will have a nice amount of debt to pay off asap as well. I can understand the situation for sure.

Is this really that high interest?

Congratulations.

Thanks.  The only reason I was able to pay it off so quickly was because I sucked up my pride and moved in with my parents.  It sucks, but it was worth it.

Congratulations.

I got subsidized student loans so my interest rates were on the low side, but they're still high considering how much I took out.  I'd have to do the math again, but I think I paid $3-4k in interest for loans that I started paying off in February of last year.

Considering that the average student loan total for undergrad is $30k, only part of which will be subsidized, and $50k to north of $100k when looking at grad school, you have large percentage of the population with a ton of money that they can't bankrupt out of with a higher interest rate than interest rates on similarly priced items.  Look at car interest rates.  You often have a 0% interest rate over several years span and tend to have interest rates that range from 2.5% to 5% after that.  Homes tend to have interest rate of 2.7% to 4%.  Higher education, which is practically mandatory in the US, is well above both of those with higher interest rates.

Edit:  I just looked at current student loan rates and students are lucky.  My loan rate was an average of 150% higher than current loan rates.

No desire to do that.  Got myself a nice Mazda 3 that I can afford already though.

Congratulations! Paying off student debt is a big deal! Any debt is good to be rid of, especially one as big as this.

Are you sure? Sounds ridiculous to me.

Much congrats man.  I am extremely grateful to have access to the GI bill and be able to avoid student loans.

That's an awesome milestone.

When are you planning to break it to your parents that you're going to continue to live there and start putting all those earmarked student loan funds towards keyboards?

Nice work Nubbs.

I'm super afraid to start needing to pay mine down when I graduate in May.

Congratulations buddy, I think that deserves a round on me.  Tell me what you are in the mood for of anything in all of San Diego and I will make sure to have a fresh growler when you come down for sorting.

Well, I plan on another tattoo and maybe a pistol, that's about it.  The only thing keyboard related may be a custom case Photeqk helped me with.

Yes, yes they are.  At least they're sub 5% now.

Nice work Nubbs.

Depending on how much you have, tough choices may be made.  It took me a stupid long time to find a job thanks to ****ty California job market and I ended up moving in with the parents, but I'm beyond thrilled that they're now paid off.

Well, Stone is doing a Black IPA...

I'll have to do some research.  I still have some awesome beers for sorting day, so I'll have to be careful to make sure I'm safe to drive back.

Congrats Nubbs... And yet life has many more loans to come - car loan, mortgage, what not!

Sounds good.  Worst case scenario, as long as we plan on a Saturday, I always have a spare bedroom.   :thumb:

Most likely Lucky Charms or Pancakes for breakfast.

Already doing the car loan thing.  Already have that about 2/3 of the way paid off.  I kept it under $25k.  There are a ton of fantastic sub-$25k cars and nothing is really worth it until you're over $50k, IMO, so opted to keep it affordable and half my before taxes salary.

Sounds like a plan.  Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, Prarie Artisan Ales, and Riip Beer Company are looking forward to making your acquaintance.

I'm all for a SoCal meetup.  We can be as nerdy or as normal as we want to be.

Yeah, I had talked to demik about meeting up to nerd out about cars but the two of us were too busy.  My schedule is clearing up a bit, though.  Perhaps it's time for an OT thread...

This is why I don't want to go back to school... I feel like I can find my own way without it, with knowledge I've already acquired and/or will acquire along the way to wherever my career goes from here...

gratz on the debt freedom tho, definitely something to celebrate
