Hey guys! I've been lurking GH for close to a year now, but finally decided to join and make it official! I have a question. Has anyone tried swapping their MX Brown springs for 62g ones? I've looked for answers around the web and forums, but haven't had much luck. I was originally thinking about throwing some Gateron Blacks into my QFR, but then I had the idea of changing the springs to 62g gold plated springs and lubing the switches. I'm sure there have been at least a few people out there that have done this, but I haven't been able to find any reviews or comments about it. What are your thoughts on this? I would rather mod my existing switches to make my keyboard that much more "mine", rather than just buying some switches anyone could buy. Thanks in advance guys! I'll post pictures of my white QFR in the other thread soon! Cheers! :D

Zealios are way better.

Any stem and spring combination will work, but what feels good to you is something only you can find out. Springs are pretty cheap so may as well try them first as long as you're confident in your desoldering abilities :)

There's very little difference in strength between the stock Brown springs and 62g "Korean" springs, they're only a little stronger. The point of using 62g springs in Clears is to make them lighter, enhancing the tactility, while still having a strong enough spring to not "stick" on the upstroke. Using them in Browns will only increase the resistance a little and reduce the tactility. Something like "tacto-Blacks", but weaker. In all honesty I wouldn't bother modding Browns like this, since the difference will hardly be noticable.
In order to open the switches on a QFR you need desolder them, so it's a fair amount of work. It's worthwhile first figuring out what you really want the switches to feel like before going to all this trouble.
In my opinion, the "best" Cherry MX switches nowadays are not actually Cherry MX switches. Zeal has worked with Gateron to produce some switches with better fitting top cases and smoother sliders in both linear and tactile variants and they're both available at a discount price until end of this month. More expensive than stock MX switches, but from what reviewers are saying they're well worth it. They have tightly fitting fully transparent casings, smooth sliders and gold plated springs. Far from "ordinary":

I like to mod my switches with the little balls from IMSTO (http://imsto.cn/index.php?route=product/product&path=61&product_id=88) to provide a softer bottom-out and I'll be doing this to my Zealios when they arrive, too. I also use a little liquid latex inside the top casings to reduce release noise. I reckon Zealios with those mods = perfection for me.

Would any of the Zealios be close to Tacto-Blacks? I feel this is kinda what I want. Something slightly tactile, but almost linear with a spring slightly lighter than Blacks.

I just swapped some springs around in my switch tester and came to the conclusion that Browns with Black springs are perfect. I tried Ergo-Clears and Panda Clears as well. I did not like Ergo-Clears at all, and while Panda Clears felt better, that bump is just way too pronounced for me. I love the ever so slight bump of Tacto-Blacks. I guess you never do know until you try it ha. Keyboard science FTW!

Ooooh! I like that!! :thumb:

My ducky has browns, and I've recently lubed them but with stock springs. Tbh, it feels the same, maybe a little less scratchier.
I think you'd be better off getting other switches.

What lube did you use on them?

Krytox GPL 206/1506.
Techkeys, thick formula lube.

Kinesis comes in Brown only, right? If/when I ever get them, gonna spring-swap them to get Blacktiles.

Nice! I can't wait to buy some Blacks so I can start the modding process!
Where did you get those PNGs of your keyboards in your sig?

From the Keyboard PNG Signature store: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=19113.0
Somewhere toward the end is a Google Docs spreadsheet of the PNGs, too.

Zealios are still better than what you're doing. Just do some research, and you'll see.
Zealios are very smooth, and as a result, the bump feels a lot more slippery and less prominent (on the 67g version), kinda like linear with a small bump. It feels completely different from Clear stems.
In the end, it's fun to experiment and try a bunch of different things to see what you like, but I'm almost certain what you described, the "linear-yet-smooth-tactile" feel would be accomplished with 67g Zealios.

67g or 65g? The 67g seem like they might be a little too heavy for me. Thanks for this! I think I'm gonna take the plunge on a set of these!

67g would be perfect if you like Black springs! Black springs are closer to 70g, but it's up to you, haha.

Cool! Thanks for the info! These Zealio switches seem awesome. Stoked for the GB!

Also the bump on the browns is barely noticeable, if anything get clears and drop the weight

Only you can tell if a particular switch is for you or not. With no intention to push anything on you, I think that you should try the linear Zealios, I think those would be very close to what you want, and even if they cost a little bit more than stock switches, if you try to do the same yourself you will end up with top leftovers and spring left overs, and you should pay more.
