Title: How do you finger your mouses? 2 or 3?
Post by: PRISONER 24601 on Mon, 26 October 2009, 02:36:25
I use my main finger for the left click, my middle finger for the scroll wheel, and my ring finger for the right click, so a total of three fings on the clickers at all times.

My thumb and pinky are then free for easy access to side buttons. All five fingers are utilized, the perfect setup.

Good for scroll-highlighting and such.

Most of the people i know only use 2 fingers on their mouse. they actually physically move their L or R click fingers over to scroll.
I don't understand this phenomenon, it's an improper utilization of technology, and it doesn't even require a single ounce of practice, like typing with all ten does.
For me it was a logical progression when they started introducing scroll wheels. 3 buttons = 3 fingers.

I know a guy who uses his mouse sideways, in front of his keyboard. I don't get it but hey to each his own.

tl;dr: 2 finger clickers are bad, they make me mad and sad.

Also, if you're left handed the whole thing is flip flopped.

In Scandinavia, we say 'mus' (='mouse') instead of '****'. Hilarity ensues.

What do you have against furry animals?

You started it, albeit unwittingly. Reminds me of when Nissan made the 'Nissan FITA'... until the time they found out that in Scandinavian languages that means the ... same thing.

It was even stranger back when computer mice had balls in them.

I don't keep a finger on the scroll wheel, just too uncomfortable, if it were a real 3rd button like on my 3-buttons then I'd keep a finger on it but it's not lol.

I've kind of migrated from 2 finger to three finger, but it depends on the mouse. Sometimes the mouse just works better with the two finger arrangement.

I do the same as you, but...

Any 5 button mouse will not last long in my house, it is one of the things I hate most. If I wanted an accordion I would buy one, that is going too far!

Those are the same guys who hold their 45 autos sideways, with the hammer down. Too much hollywood and not enough reality bites.

Here in the States, Chevrolet had a car named the "Nova," which means "No Go" in Spanish. Not surprisingly they had a marketing problem with some North Americans.

No, it's improper design. Mice just don't fit people's hands so they can use 'proper' technique. Why should I contort my hand into an unnatural position just because the designers think the average person has hands like a six year old girl?

EDIT> Aside from the size issue, consider this. Your middle finger is the longest. So the scroll wheel needs to be further forward than the ideal activation points for the left/right mouse buttons. Can you name any mice that satisfy this simple requirement?

Who let the damn Apple magic mouse designer onto the forum ;)

Besides, maybe their target audience was six year old girls. That would explain Windoze...

After you see the cars Seat puts out you'll wonder why they didn't call their own cars Nova....

I use the claw hand method of mousing. I adopted it mostly as the result of doing a lot of FPS instagib style gaming a few years ago. The rest of the sytle was developed to accelerate my workflow when doing Web development work.

When they're not pressing buttons, all five fingers are flexed on top and on the sides of the mouse and I bend my fingers and wrist to move the mouse. My palm almost never touches the mouse and usually I only have my finger tips on it except for my pinky finger which wraps the outside edge to stabilize movements.

I have a seven button Razer Diamondback and I'm actually quite fond of the outside buttons that most multibutton mice have done away with. The two pinky buttons are used to open new documents and save them.

The scroll wheel is operated with either my index finger or my middle finger. It depends on which one is free at the moment. I use my middle finger for right clicking or scroll wheeling. The scroll wheel click is used for refreshing Web pages. It saves my left thumb the stress of having to hit Alt-R to reload pages over and over again when I'm developing Websites.

The ring finger is used just to stabilize the mouse movements. It's either resting lightly on the outside of the right click button or it's curled around the outside to get a better grip of the mouse.

My thumb is positioned to grip the inside of the mouse or to hit the two inside buttons. Those are my page up and page down buttons.

There are different ways of gripping a mouse. Some are just crappy designs, but some styles favor a different style of holding them. If you ever look at the gaming mice designed by F1tality, you'll notice they look oddly short. They look like a squarish version of the dreaded Apple puck mice bulked up on steroids. It wasn't done for style nor was it a design flaw.

You do know that F5 also works for refresh in every web browser, right?

Yes. But control r or alt r do refresh it. Bummer, I was excited about your post. Everything I can do on the keyboard to avoid the mouse is beneficial. And every keystroke that can be simplified is also good.

I'll look into the key mappings for shortcuts, I should be able to change it.

Strange, every browser I've tried works with F5. I thought SeaMonkey did too. Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, IE all do.

Is there a reason that you can't use the actual names for software?

You're asking the wrong guy. I notice most open source projects adopt goofy, cutesy, stupid names that have no connection with the application. I would prefer the people responsible for naming software actually pick meaningful names for it. Until that happens, and while they paint bullseyes on themselves with hilarious/meaningless names, I'll be singing that song you know so well...

Is there some reason you're particularly troubled by that?

I think some of you guys have too few real problems to worry about. Good for you!

2 Fingers, because its more comfortable...

To use 3 fingers they would have to look like this:

2.  Depending on what I am doing, I might use either finger for the scroll wheel.

2 fingers.

The only unusual thing is that I sometimes grab the mouse between thumb and ringfinger so I can move it around whilst keeping my wrist vertical (those sometimes give me some trouble). In that position, I sometimes click left with my thumb and right with my middle finger.

Depends on the mouse. With my Kensington Expert Mouse it's all five fingers (thumb for right button, pinkie for left, and the others for the ball)

Two fingers for me. Middle finger is too long for scrolling wheel. The Apple Magic Mouse would be a good solution (for little girls).

Do you like translation jokes? I live in a French speaking region. When I want to withdraw money from a cash dispenser, the machine asks me to enter my "PIN". Do you know what means "PIN" (written "pine") in French? An organ males use for reproduction. Imagine a machine asking you to introduce your "PIN" into it ;-)

Another one? O.K. Where I live, there's now a counter-productive habit to write everything in English, even if only few people understand that language. So, when it's the sales season, I read "SALE" on the windows of shops selling clothes. Do you know the meaning of "sale" in French? Dirty. As if the shop managers were saying "buy our dirty clothes". Stupid, isn't it?

I use a total of three fingers when using the trackball in my IBM M5-2 keyboard. The thumb moves the trackball, my pointer-finger controls the primary click button while my middle finger controls the secondary click button (They really aren't left and right buttons due to their orientation on the trackball).
