Title: Got my new old Lexmarks
Post by: ironcoder on Mon, 26 October 2009, 05:58:13
Today I received my NIB 1993 and 1996 Model 52G9658s. I was going to use the newer one but the box was factory sealed and the '93 was already opened (it was the poster child on Clicky) so I'm using the 1993 right now.

What an aircraft carrier this thing is! I have 22 inch LCDs and this thing is as wide as the screen housing.

Man these things are built like tanks! The action is heavier than I remembered but I'll use it for a few days to see how I adjust to it. Surprisingly the Filco pad works ok with it.

Edit: it feels wrong using Emacs on this thing...

I heard they went out of business and the product is offline. Do you have a link?

Nice stuff. Is there any difference in feel or weight between the 93 and 96 one?

The only difference I'm aware of is the 1996 model is supposed to have 2 piece key tops and the '93 has the one piece key tops. I didn't break the seal on the 1996 so I can only tell you what I saw on clicky's site before I ordered it. I guess I'll keep it sealed until I really need it.

I'm using the '93 now on my main system. Typing is now an event!

My wife came into my office and noticed something was different. She said oh you went back to the old keyboard? I said no, this is one of the new ones I just got. She said what? It looks old...

I said yeah, isn't it beautiful?

Yeah, the 52G9658 is meant to be the double-pieced model, but there are a fair few exceptions. The 52G7000 is meant to be the part number for the single piece keycaps. I've never seen a '7000 with double piece caps.

I intend on getting an Industrial Model M made in 97 soon enough. Plan to do a 'Welly' mod.

One of these days I'll probably get an industrial M. But right now, I'm looking at an old AT keyboard made by PC's Limited (They changed their name to Dell in 1988).
