Found this at the recycling centre today: 8 Cherry boards. 7 are G80-11906, 1 is 11900 (see if you can spot which one :P ). All are LPMGB (lasered PBT caps, MX black). They're also all missing their cables unfortunately, and some are missing some caps.

I'll probably keep one for myself for my collection, but the rest I'm not too sure about xD . Anyone know if there is an interest for this sort of thing? Maybe the caps or something?
-
Nice haul! The lasered PBT caps aren't bad but they're not super sought after. You could probably sell the boards for switches and stabilizers.
-
give um away <3
id love one
-
Seems good for harvesting switches.
-
Damn... I envy you. Do you know how hard is to get a proper ISO Enter key?
If you don't know what to do with them and want to show a little charity to some Spanish guy, let me know :thumb: (I take care of the shipping, of course)
-
The little touch pads are so cute!
-
I'm guessing then that these will be most valued for the caps, then? How about £5 plus shipping per board or set of caps, would that be a fair?
I need to raise some money for a somewhat expensive project atm anyway xD .
-
I played spot the difference and failed :))
Do the PCBs have switch holes to rearrange the bottom row or is it fixed? The funky spacebar is not helpful and I really don't need more switches, even if they are a bargain. Must resist!
-
Found the oddbal!
Bottom left. Newer Windows logo.

My son gamed on one of these for a couple of years and loved it.
Although the touch pads are the old-fashioned kind (no 2-finger action) and small, they are especially nice.
It would be good to save them for other projects if you are parting out the boards otherwise.

Yeah, I guess if no-one wants them I can disassemble them for parts or something. I'll keep one for myself for sure, anyway.

We have a winner! :D

I think the switches and stabilizers are the most valuable parts unless people are hunting for ISO caps. Like I said, lasered PBT isn't really sought after. That's a solid price though.

Would these be considered vintage blacks for smoothness' sake?
-
Very cool find! Have you tested them yet? That would be an interesting board to own.

I don't know enough about Cherries to ascertain that. I opened the case on the one I'm keeping for myself, turns out it's from 2000. I'm guessing the others will be from very close to that date.

Haha well they're all missing their cables so obviously testing them isn't possible xD . If you're interested though, I have opened a classifieds WTS page that's awaiting approval atm :) . It's already open on DT.

Bummer. What happened to the cables? How hard would it be to replace it?

If you're interested in getting rid of some of the bottom row keys from one of those I would be interested.

They were cut off before they were taken to the recycling centre, presumably to make it easier to transport them.

You can! I opened a Classifieds page for sale of these things: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=75697.0 :)

If there was a way to get around the logistical problem of getting anything to anyone that needed it, recycling for scrap would not exist except for bad parts, ICs, etc.

This is actually not true, at least, not over here. I've visited more than half a dozen recycling centres around the area and the first thing they always do to keyboards is cut off the cable. Originally they used to harvest silver off the membranes, but no-one does that anymore because it's not worth the effort. Now they just take the cables and harvest the metals out of them instead. From a recyclers' point of view, keyboards are very unattractive because they have virtually no resale value (hence why I can get away with paying them 50 pence per board) and they're not always easy to get rid of.

That's interesting that the cable is worth more than the keyboard, so cutting it off makes perfect sense.
But my point was that if there was a way for scrappers to know that a keyboard like this (even in bad shape) was worth more than the scrap value for the metal in the cable, and if it was easy for them to obtain that sale, then more things would end up being re-used vs scrapped, completely bypassing a big chunk of the 'recycle' workflow process.

In the big picture, time is money and margins are slim. It's not worth the time for them to chase down specialized buyers for stuff like this when they can just dump it into a bin within seconds.

I completely agree, and that's the challenge/problem--connecting buyers and sellers of anything anywhere instantly. Mark my words--whoever will figure that out will create the next big revolution in the business world.

Well, loads of people already do that, they're just specialised merchants. Cindy at DT is probably the closest example of this.

Agreed. Now expand that by an order of magnitude to anything anyone anywhere worldwide instantly--something with Facebook's reach and any classifieds forum's power. That's going to be the holy grail.

Nice find!
I'm still hoping to find something like that one day.
Something remotely like that.
One day.
Maybe.
