Title: Do you think Realforce is very good against dust and water?
Post by: phoenix1234 on Wed, 30 September 2015, 10:55:00
This morning, I did a silly mistake by spilling a whole cup of coffee over my RF104. At first, I thought it was over. But I tried my best to unplug the keyboard immediately, turned it up side down over a towel, waited until it dry, removed the keycap, soaked the keycap in detergent and opened the keyboard.

Everything inside is very dry, the PCB is clean, the rubber dome is clean.  I only need to clean the top of the plate by using a brush, isopropyl alcohol, a couple of q-tips and a vacuum cleaner. After cleaning and drying everything, I took this chance to lube the back of the sliders with Krytox 105 and finally assembled them back together.

Perhaps I'm just lucky or the board is very good against water. The keyboard came back to work normally. What do think about this case? Do you think Torpe switch is very good in protecting against water?

Edit: spelling error

Don't think its better or worse than other boards, but the rubber dome does protect the capacitance switch a bit. I wouldn't put it through a dishwasher though, like you can with some boards.

I think where liquids become an issue is when you have something corrosive in them, like soda does. Plain water, and probably even regular coffee isn't that bad.

Glad you were able to save it!  I almost spilled protein drinks on my IBM M a few times and after that made a rule of no drinks at the computer, period.  If need to eat/drink, I should probably take a break anyways.

Water was spilled into my lz GH earlier in the week, dried out and seems okay. Took about an hour for my heart rate to get back to normal.

Didn't use any alcohol, though, does it help?

If it is just a plain water, you don't need to use any alcohol but make sure there is no water inside the switch.
I think the Cherry MX is very weak against dust and water.
Cherry MX Blue could lose the clicky within a few months of use under high humidity and temperature like Vietnam and Singapore or in dusty environment. Switch stickers can help a bit in preventing the dust though its main purpose the reduce the wobble issue of Cherry MX. Nevertheless, it is just a band-aid solution and it will not prevent the dust and water. Water could leak into the copper contact leaves and makes it corrosion while Topre switch has the dome to protect it.

few bocks could save a two hundred dollars keyboard  ;D

Its one of my reason to start and make a cover with two others members  :thumb:
