I wanted to share some work I have been doing here:
http://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/designing-a-custom-topre-board-t11734.html
I will keep updating the deskthority thread (don't want to over complicate things) but will be reading this thread to answer any questions if there is any interest.
-
Best of luck in this project.
-
I don't think anyone's done this before - good luck!
And please keep us updated :)
-
Definitely interesting. Keep us updated please!
-
Wow, this is really exciting! I can't wait for updates :)
-
i was a little worried until I saw the update that you are looknig into temperature anaalysis and long term stability. Exactly what I wanted to see! Best of luck with the project.
-
Stoked to see what you come up with!
-
Thank you guys. Posted a small update to the thread, I got one of the columns for the keyboard manufactured:

Looking good so far ;)
-
woah, what an awesome project!
too bad your current housing is a bit too thick, can imagine the cap hitting the metal wouldn't be too pleasant ; p
and nice to see hasu sharing some thoughts as well!
-
Cool idea! I will try to follow along, although I am rarely on DT.
-
Such an ambitious and passionate project. This would be sick to see, and I'm not even that much of rubber cup head. :)
-
topre ergo style setup... pinch me I must be dreaming!!!
-
Whoooaaaa this is really neat. :D
-
Fascinating. I LOVE the ability to adjust all the columns on the fly to dial in the perfect setup. I know squat **** about the engineering part, but if you make this work, you are a hero.
-
I suddenly have the urge to donate money to a kickstarter.
-
Actually, sell your idea to PFU, take a percentage of the profits from their newest model, the Split HHKB, and let them do the rest.
-
Thank you guys, it's good to see people are interested. :D

This sounds like a firmware issue, should be easy enough to solve but that would be much later on.
For now, I posted a new update: http://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/designing-a-custom-topre-board-t11734.html#p272441

Dumb question, but would this be something you'd want to distribute Ergodox-style (w/ open source everything) or would this be a totally one-off deal like kurplop's customs?

It is highly unlikely that I assemble any boards for others: I just don't have the time. I wish to open source this when it becomes mature enough.

I think if you open source it, someone will come along and be willing to produce parts for it. This is a pretty radical leap forward.
-
wooow , I'm very excited for what might come next
-
After taking an extended break I am back working on the board, keypress detection is going well:

Just today I have managed to reduce the noise shown there significantly. The firmware I started is coming along, complete with analog mouse keys which are really cool.
I have been working more in the last couple of days on the metal parts, I want to get a full keyboard produced soon. PCBs are still going through revisions. Here is a render:

So many great keyboards posted this week.
-
Good god, thank you for sharing
-
This looks amazing and that's ony talking about the case - that it's Topre takes it to the next level
-
Looks like you're doing the impossible. I'm very impressed and can't wait to see this project get completed (hopefully soon)!
-
Thanks, should be sorting it all soon.
Some more renders with slightly refined design, still need to put some thought into the base and feet (tenting)

I have ordered the prototype controller PCBs: (left side pictured)

Hopefully everything will go smoothly.
