Title: A Woodworker's Dream
Post by: kurplop on Sat, 10 October 2015, 22:07:35
Today my neighbor called me over because he was cleaning out his garage and had some things he thought I might be able to use.

He opened up a box and these were inside.

Yep. 50- 10"x 12" veneers of various hardwoods. A lot of real beauties- rosewood, lacewood, bubinga, and many highly figured woods, some I can't identify.

Then he said, "Hey, you may like this too!"

He took me behind a stack of boxes and this was sitting there.

A veneer press! His late father was an avid woodworker and my neighbor told me that the press was probably the last thing he made before succumbing to cancer. The fact that there were a full 50 sheets in the stack of veneers supports his theory. I felt honored that he would pass these treasures on to me.

So, any suggestions as to what kind of keyboard projects I could do with this newfound medium?

I've done a little intarsia work but practically no marquetry or parquetry projects. It will be fun to experiment.

Some of the more figured ones would make excellent tops for guitars and basses.

Have a flamed maple top guitar and spalted maple top bass.  Great stuff.

That would look nice. The sheets aren't big enough for an entire top but could make some nice inlays.

Years ago I did a lot of investigation on acoustic instrument construction, specifically violin making. I came to realize that without a critical ear to make the subtle adjustments in the  thickness and placement of the various parts I would likely end up with a work of art that would screech like a freshly castrated pig.

Get enough scrap wood together and you could easily have enough for a top...

You know, it'd probably be a waste by area, but I've never thought of having a guitar-style flamed maple top wooden case... where would the nicest part go? Maybe the bottom, I dunno. Ooo maybe clamshell style would be neat!

It could be like the PRS I never owned hehe

A violin, then?
