Title: Southern California Mechanical Meetup!
Post by: manofinterests on Mon, 19 October 2015, 14:27:24
Hello Everyone! I would like to invite everyone to the Third Southern California Mechanical Keyboard Meetup! Our friends at Originative, LLC. are nice enough to offer their office as a meeting spot. Here are the relevant details.

Location/Address:
Originative, LLC.
2500 Pacific Park Dr.
Whittier, CA 90601
Date: November 14th, 2015 (Saturday)
Time: TBD (Between 10:00am and 6:00pm

There will be a soldering demonstration, a spring swap demonstration, and a switch lube demonstration at the event if anyone would like to learn about these 3 aspects of mechanical keyboards. We would like to host a typing tournament if anyone is interested. There will be food (pizza) for attendees as well! We hope to see everyone there and hope to see a lot of interesting keyboards.

PS: If some people could bring folding tables (and maybe folding chairs) that would be perfect. We want to make sure we have enough space for all of the keyboards haha.

I hope GH'ers in the area can come out and talk keyboards :)

Vote Here for beer choice and pizza topping choice! -->https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1k3bWseSw5F-gfhm-G737VuV3VEEer5Vrk80ovWR85jU/viewform?c=0&w=1 (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1k3bWseSw5F-gfhm-G737VuV3VEEer5Vrk80ovWR85jU/viewform?c=0&w=1)

Third??  Where were you with the first two??  :P

Also, as absyrd said, it might be good to get in touch with Sent.  You're definitely welcome to host your own though if you'd like.

Oh wow I have not seen that original stickied thread. What a small world haha.

@Hoff,

The first one was only posted on reddit, although the second one was posted here on GH as well as Reddit. Our last meetup was at elitekeyboards' storefront which was really nice. I'm trying my best to use GH more, but sometimes I find the organization a bit tedious to be honest, but there are a good deal of friendly wonderful people there who also enjoy keyboards, so the more who can come the merrier :).

Edit: His meetup seems to be a nice meet and greet which is wonderful! His meetup isn't a keyboard meet, but it still sounds wonderful. If I wasn't out of town that weekend I'd go to that event too!

Cool!  No worries, we can't expect everyone to use geekhack.  ;)  I do hope you continue to post them here though, so we can hear the news.  I definitely think the format on geekhack is a bit more suited for these types of rolling threads, so hopefully you find it easier to use as you become more experienced.  Is there anything in particular you're having issues with?  There might be a simple trick to make it easier.  :)

The format on GH definitely helps with rolling threads a bit more than reddit which is nice. For me it becomes an issue once a thread reaches 10+ pages haha, but it's good that there can be a central thread for people to talk about an issue instead of making reposts or alternate threads. My main issues are following certain threads and keeping updated with information. Sometimes I feel like for groupbuy threads, I can't really stay up to date unless I read through 15 or so pages to find out what the OP is saying in response to certain questions.

I'll definitely be using GH much more since it never hurts to meet more wonderful people who also like keyboards.

Hopefully if you're free on the 14th you can make this meetup as well as Sent's meetup on the 7th :)

I was able to catch the Elite Keyboard meetup.  Nice bunch of guys. Nice bunch of keyboards  I'd encourage all you SoCal GHers to try to make it.

Awesome to see more meet ups around SoCal.  I'll definitely try to make this.  It's pretty close to me.

my favorite thing about GH is that once someone comments on a thread they continue to get updates. It makes it very easy to reuse the same thread for every meetup, as you can edit the OP and Title as well  :thumb: Learning curve is definitely there, but once you get it GH is very good for this kind of post!!! If you need held i'd be more than happy to lend a hand!

Hey Everyone! The 11/14/15 Southern California Meetup is coming up this weekend and I hope keyboard enthusiasts in the area will be able to attend! Judging by the comments on the stickied event post there will be a good turnout :)

And here’s a recap…
Location/Address:
Originative, LLC.
2500 Pacific Park Dr.
Whittier, CA 90601
Date: November 14th, 2015 (Saturday)
Time: 11am-2:30 (beers from 3-4pm, event ends at 5pm)

I do have a few exciting announcements for the event!

Datamancer has announced they will be attending the event and hosting a raffle for attendees.

Originative Co. will be having a photo contest in which a lucky winner (picked by /u/waikane ) will receive a prize! So bring out your camera and your keyboard photography skills!

I will be organizing a typing tournament! So please PM me or leave a comment if you wish to participate. I will allow signups the day of the tournament as long as you are signed up to compete by 12pm (Noon). There will be a prize for the first place winner courtesy of the typing tournament’s sponsor: Datamancer.

/u/waikane of Originative will be doing a soldering demonstration and I will be assisting him as well as helping with spring swaps. We will be talking about the overall process of building a custom keyboard, modding a keyboard, and answering any general questions we can answer.

For those bringing extra tables and chairs, thank you so much!

I hope to see y'all there! If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

How many people showed up?  That's a really large selection of boards for a local meetup!

I didn't take a head count, but probably about 50 or so. A good turnout for sure.

Interesting side note: There were about 5 or 6 ladies present and the rest were guys (obviously).  There was a raffle with 4 winners and 3 of the winners were girls. Not only that, the speed typing contest was won by a lady. We're getting killed guys! Datamancer contributed some really nice prizes, including a datamancer keyboard for the typing winner.

I would have liked to see more GHers there; the hobby can be even better with more bridges between the groups.

How did the meetup go?

Welcome to Geekhack and it's ok to be part of both GH and MK.  Monogamy is just for marriage, not keyboard forums.

I can only speak for myself but I think it was a real success.
