I've been given the opportunity to use a Novatouch for this week thanks to CptBadAss and my favorite things about this board is this thock.
Before I make the full transition into cupped rubber, which board gives the loudest or best thock?
-
HHKB, definitely.
No plate and a very resonant body.
-
Yep the HHKB 45g.
-
Yes HHKB, follow by Leopold FC660C.
-
I think the RF87U, with the metal plate, gives it the least thocky sound. The HHKB probably wins out on this one. ;D
-
I don't have any other Topre boards but I do have to say that the HHKB gives a wonderful and decently loud thock sound. I'm not a heavy typer though and I barely bottom out, so I'm sure it could be louder.
-
HHKB, but the novatouch and RF when silenced both give quite nice thocky sounds as well.
-
+1 to silenced, so that the clack from the upstroke isn't present to POLLUTE the sound!
-
I think fc660c makes pleasantly nice and loud sound.
-
Silencing Topre is like putting spinners on a Lamborghini...maybe even worse.

It ruins the sound pretty bad.
The HHKB thock is louder than the Realforce 87U for sure.
In fact, I'd say there's too much noise from the HHKB and the 87U is more refined.
-
The HHKB spacebar thock is pretty much one of the best sounds ever. So HHKB.
-
i so disagree! silencing and topre go so well together. i honestly much prefer silenced when it comes to topre.
i feel like that snappy clack from the upstroke doesn't belong at all :P
especially the PBT spacebar has a very loud 'tack', but silenced it has the most beautiful thock!
that type-s hhkb is some hardcore ASMR right there! ;p
i mean, i'm all for 'raw', but the silencing puts that extra emphasis on that thocky sound by nicely dampening that tacky/ticky sound. perfect!

So far I agree with you from those two links you provided. That silenced HHKB sounds pretty marvelous but can't say yet for touch/feel.
Thanks again for the responses everybody.

This is a thread. Of course there would be a thread about loud topre. So much complexity in the rubber cup.

As shown in the videos, the type-S just sounds muted in a muffled way to me. You really hear a gritty sound in the keystroke that sounds like a hiss or even a squeak sometimes. Maybe it would sound a bit better lubed and with sound deadening in the case.
The regular Topre upstroke sounds crisp and clear. My favorite Topre sound is the Realforce 87U with black keycaps (which are different from the white/grey). Very crisp.
To each their own!
-
I can't tell the difference between silenced topre and not. Its just a sound thing. The key travel is slightly reduced, but its marginal enough that I don't notice.
BTW, HHKB with SA keycaps is louder thock than HHKB with stock PBT
-
Can anyone who has used greens and a HHKB Topre describe the difference of the two?
Thinking of upgrading to a Torpe, my favorite switch is blue/greens. I have seen the sound videos up top but want some opinion from the experts.
-
Wouldn't an HHKB modded with 55g domes be louder than the 45g variety given that they have more force on the upstroke?

So the OP wants to love the "Thock" sound whilst others here hate that sound, what gives?
Is this why some of you demento's here spend an extra $100 to get an HHKB Type "S" :)) .
-
Not sure if 55g RF or 55g HHKB is louder, but 55g is definitely the way to go! ^-^
-
It's been a little while since I have had my 45 HHKB, but from faint memory, my 55g HHKB seems a tad louder on the upstroke.
-
Loudest thockiest board I've ever tried was mkawa's Realforce 10th anniversary. Somehow he wore out the lube I think and it was extra thocky.

even better with these PBT spacebars :thumb:
-
I tried to listen to the regular HHKB and the type-S and apart from a bit of muffling, I couldn't really tell that there was too much of a difference. Is it really worth the extra 100 USD or so?
On another note, I'm getting my PBT spacebar for my RF87U 55g. Will that increase the thockiness by a lot compared to the default ABS one?

Hypersphere's silencing rings for $36 seem to be more economical. I would rather buy those than a type S, to be honest.

No its not for me. The type s sounds bad and muffles the thock some what. I sold my type s and went back to the stock. The extra price makes people think its somehow better but for me the type s feels less topre. Also the way they changed the stems tightness makes it feel less alive.

Novatouch has the loudest CLACK!
-
My favorite Topre sound is the Realforce 87U with black keycaps (which are different from the white/grey). Very crisp.
To each their own!
Wow, I am not as one with the cup rubber as I thought. Glad I went with the black 87u though ;D
This thread is making it difficult to decide whether to get hypersphere's silencing rings for my 87u

I have no idea why Altis says this. He seems to be the only person who thinks that there's any difference due to dye used in the caps, when there clearly is not.

You remind me of someone who used to post here.
But to your point there have been a few threads discussing the sound difference between black and white topre caps. And there is no reason there couldn't be some difference due to dye used and or possibly different compositions in the plastics. Yeah they are pbt key caps but that doesn't meant they are exactly the same composition.

I found hipro to be thockier

no idea if the sound is different (never bothered to properly test), but there's definitely a difference in texture between the caps of the black RF, and those of the white RF.
funnily enough, the F and J caps of my white RF have more texture than the rest of the caps on the board. the texture of those two caps is similar to the texture of the black RF caps.

I mean.. why would they change the keycap composition just because of color? :l

Me, Altis, or Tararais?

Interesting. I have a white 55g coming in next month (I already have a black 55g). So you're saying that the white keys have LESS texture than your black Realforce?

absolutely. the specific boards i have are a black 55g (SE18T0) and a white type-s variable (SE070S).
i also noticed that the F and J keys on the white one reflect a lot less light than the other caps. you can actually see that they are different in texture, not only feel it.
peculiar stuff!
-
I doubt they would have different key molds by color.
-
I've owned HHKB/RF 55g/Novatouch i miss the sound of the HHKB the most. Thock on another level compared to my other two topre boards.
-
60% board with a price tag of 225$
well anyway coming from a mx switch user and exposed to realforce87 55g, the loudest thock is the realforce

HHKB with double/tripleshot ABS keycaps harvested from a Brother typewriter for loudest thock!
PS - I happen to be selling this exact keyboard (except for the orange Bro Cap you see in the video), PM me if you're interested.

I tried those once! I didn't really like the feel of them. They had a weird slope, and didn't have the best texture on top, so I told him to sell the keycaps instead lololl.
