Muhle r41 in rose gold mostly. I have a Merker laying around and a straight as well that I occasionally use. Still going through the thousand or so Astra blades I bought for like nine bucks off Amazon... So much cheaper than that Gillete crap!Well, I'm keen to try r41, and Muehle even sell replacement head to convert r89 to r41, but I'll wait for a month or so - i still need to weed out quite a few bad shaving habits. R89 is quite forgiving, but r41 might not be so.
Edit: Autocorrect is crap.
I might be on the lazy side, for me razor takes a lot of my morning timeWell, I use an electric shaver, but only when I travelling. I found that I cannot get a clean shave with it - no matters how good the brand is.
so I use the easy fast shaver, Braun is the only one to go

Well, I'm glad that for you this is the case. But, alas, for me it was only half-decent shaving with constant redness of the skin. So - I tried rotor and "net" electric shavers, then spent a lot on various cartrige razors, and returned to T-shape razors in the end.I might be on the lazy side, for me razor takes a lot of my morning timeWell, I use an electric shaver, but only when I travelling. I can tell that it has different result between people, from what I know the thickness of beard/hair you grow really makes the difference
for me it works very well, I use Braun series 7
Also on the every other month plan with Dollar Shave Club :thumb:It's the only setup I've found that doesn't tear my face apart. Gillette blades are nice and all, but they're so expensive I was using them for way too long which is worse.
the shave butter usually lasts even longer than that tho
I've been rocking an Edwin Jagger DE89 on a short handle with Kai blade for the last year and have loved it. I used to be an electric shaver for years, but wet shaving with a DE razor has been great.
My recommendation is to get an intermediate razor like an 89 and get a sampler of the nicer blades to find the combination of blade and razor that works for you. I found that Feather blades were too aggressive, but the Russian made Astra and Gillette blades would pull rather than get a clean cut on my hair.
Second recommendation would be to get a good triple-milled soap rather than a cream. It'll save you some money in the long run, and is only slightly less convenient.
Also using an Edwin Jagger, DE89L with a Feather blade. Before that used a Merkur Barber Pole and before that was a Merkur 23C long handle.
I second the sampler pack of blades if you're newer to wet shaving. I went through probably 10 different kinds of blades before finding that Feather worked best for me.
I usually use soaps but am currently trying the Cella shaving creme and it's working out quite well. I'm using a generic boar brush for now.
I use a Braun electric razor with its own self-cleaning dock.Nah, it's nothing to fear. Just begin with non-agressive razor like Muehle r89 or Edwin Jagger DE89.
It works really great, but I have to buy cleaning fluid cartridges for the dock every few months.
I would love to try a traditional razor, but it is almost intimidating to think about it. ^-^

If I was still traveling a lot I would probably go with a good shaving creme, but with my recent change to zero work travel I'm loving D.R. Harris soaps.
On the brush I spent a little more for a firmer finest badger brush.
Have you tried a shorter handle before? I've been tempted to get a longer one to compare.

You're looking on a 50 bucks or so for a decent razor (in my opinion, you can not do wrong with aforementioned Muhle or Edwin Jagger - they're of superb quality), a pack of a blades to try (diffetent kinds) - about ten bucks, brush (synthetic or hog will be OK for beginner, but you can go for badger at once) - 10-20 bucks, good shaving soap (try Proraso - it's good and pretty cheap). All in all, be ready to spent up to 100 USD.I use a Braun electric razor with its own self-cleaning dock.Nah, it's nothing to fear. Thanks for the recommendations. Is it expensive to get everything I need for a setup? I'm not entirely sure what would be required.

You can spent less, go for Lord, or, god forbid, Weishi razor, but if you're want to save a few bucks, it's better to go without shaving soap and brush and use your current shaving foam or cream. But good razor is good razor.
Yep. You right on it. Oh, and if you'll buy natural brush - get stand for it, when it will be drying upside-down. It helps to prolong its "life". I am always willing to spend a few extra dollars on the good stuff, and this seems to be a fair investment towards something different. I'll look around and post back if I do get into it. ^-^

I've still got one of those blue and black 3 blade gilette things from the late 90's. Still on the original pack of blades.Nowadays Gilette cartriges ai'nt made to be durable as it was in the nineties.
I spent $60ish for my first setup.Well, when you a newbie, you can't be sure you'll like Astra. So I advise a sample pack with first kit. And then yes, buying you favourite blades in a bulk saves your monies.
$30ish for a Merkur DE from Amazon
$20ish for the Art of Shaving travel pack with the little boar brush and soap
$5-8 for a 30pack of Astra blades from Amazon
If you're not this committed but still want to save money, I highly recommend Dollar Shave Club's 4-blade razor and shave butter. I'm on the every 2 months plan and I still end up with a stockpile of extra blades.
Double edge safety razor here. Merkur 34C head with a Maggard Razor handle. Random Art of Shaving badger brush and an Imperial travel boar brush. I prefer Astra blades as well but iamtootallwiththis keeps hooking it up with new blades and shave soaps. Right now I really like Barrister and Mann's Limon Latha.

Me too. Loaded Feather blade in my razor for tomorrow shaving. Wish me luckWell, when you a newbie, you can't be sure you'll like Astra. So I advise a sample pack with first kit. And then yes, buying you favourite blades in a bulk saves your monies.
I wasn't sure I'd like em either but I just picked a brand and tried it out. A single pack or a 3 pack of anything isn't too pricey. Under $5.
And trust me, I'm still new to wetshaving.
I use a kamisori. I also have an old super speed if I don't have time to strop.
There are places that offer sample packs of DE blades. I got a sampler many years ago from bullgoose shaving. It was something like 20 bucks for 10 different brands. Totally worth it. The blade/handle/face combo is important for long term happiness.
Again Geekhack makes me want something better than what I have! :'( I use the cheapest disposable I can find and hope it doesn't cut me and ruin my skin with razor burnDollar shave club is super cheap and you get 4 blades. There's literally no reason not to try it.

I have been wanting to try a kamisori for awhile, but never really known anyone to have one. Have you ever used a traditional straight and, if so, what is it about the kamisori you prefer?

I started using a straight razor from the art of shaving a few years ago. It's a little time consuming at first, but once you get comfortable dragging a sharp knife across your face it doesn't take much longer than a regular razor. It's weirdly relaxing now and I quite enjoy the whole process.
It's also not a great time sink for me because I can go a couple of days without shaving and won't look like a haggard mess.
I've always been interested in switching to a safety razor with a nice German handle but currently I too use Dollar Shave Club. I usually do the every month for 3-4 months and then cancel for the rest of the year...end up with enough razors in that time period for 2 people for the rest of the year and spent less than one Gillette refill package.Well, it's not all about price of shaving, but about feeling too. As with the keyboards ;)
Also, for me Proraso Red worked better than Green. I found it more smooth and better smelling - although I like cooling effect of Green.

I have not heard of them. If you're looking for a quality DE razor to try out the hobby with, I'd recommend an Edwin Jaggar DE89. They seem to have a great following. Most people will recommend the DE89 or Merkur's 34c to beginners. The latter being a slightly larger cost, but generally a slight upgrade. I use a Merkur 38c. It was my first DE as well. I prefer the slightly longer handle than the 34c, but that's just me.

Already have Muhle R89. As for this Schmidt razor - I googled about it, and people say the quality of the head is a bit lower than Jagger/Muehle, but still pretty decent. And it have a nice big handle. Maybe I'll buy it... Even if just for handle ;)

Price appears to be the same... Well, my salary next week, so I might to order it then. My dad had been seriously unhappy with his Mach3 lately, calls it "money-burner" and wants to try DE Razors - so maybe I'll gift it to him for birthday.

I'd say go for it. Price seems quite reasonable. I don't think it's that big of a deal that the handle is smooth. I'd prefer texture of course, but I don't think you will die.

Bro we need a pic of that.
Merkur 38c 4oz here. Wife got it for me for our anniversary a bit over a month ago, along with 100 blades and a whole kit (badger hair brush, too :D). My first DE razor, and I'm actually loving it. I shave about every other day now, and it's super soothing/relaxing.
Is Maggard razors handles and heads any good? They have some pretty cheap heads and nice-looking all-stainless-steel handles on their site.
Lately I've been using Super Iridiums over Feather/7 o'clock. Very smooth and not as dangerous as using Feather.Tried that supposedly "scary" Feathers last week. They gave me pretty smooth and clean shaving. I used them in a mild closed comb, though.

Well, my facehair is pretty hard and wiry, so I have a problems to shave it off even with a Feather. No nicks, though - only on the upper lip when I tried to shave it against the grain. It was a bad, bad idea :)I almost always nick my chin with Feather. It's just _too_ sharp for me.Lately I've been using Super Iridiums over Feather/7 o'clock. I shave my head and face 3 times a week with a Gilette Fusion Proglide dealy. My hair (what is left of it) is very thin, while my facial hair is extremely thick and stubborn. If my shaving cream is really foamy and not wet, the razor clogs the **** up every two seconds and I have to bash it against the sink to get the hair out before my next stroke. I end up throwing out the bottom 25% of every shaving cream can because it gets too fluffy.
What can I do? Can I go straight-razor? Different cream?
No. You stop sending me ****, plz.
I'll try some soap from that joint as I really hate wasting anything even if it is just a quarter of a can of barbasol.

Astra platinum. Got a 100 pack and they work really well. I think I'm gonna move up in sharpness once I run out. Probably some Feathers

Nice. I shave with my late grandfather's Gillette Fat Boy every day. Love it!
Dang. You guys are fancy. I use the cheap 2 blade disposable razors and a quick run with the trimmer over the beard area. Normally, I can get 2 good uses out of each razor :D :D.You should try DE razors. You can get a decend Gillette Tech on ebay for 20-30 bucks. Blades are cheap, and my dad gets about three weeks of shaving from one. Me - about week.

Yes, what he said. It is so much more of a pleasurable experience, and yet I never knew how cheap shaving could get until I started using a DE. 100 blades for like $9 I think. Bonkers.

Been using feathers for over a year now, tried other brands, Astra, Personna, Derby, Treet, nothing else springs to mind. But none have felt as comfy as a feather has with the hair I have.
I use a Merkur Solingen, it's alright, feathers aren't sitting well lately as one sides shaving far better than the other.. Or that's normal and I've been doing something wrong this entire time, definitely not ruling that one out :G
Oh also finishing up a block of geo f. trumper's rose shaving soap, love the smell.
Welcome to geekhack!
A ton of people love feathers and praise them, but for me at least Astras in my Slim Adjustable are the best.
If you love that floral scent, check out Lavanille by Barrister and Mann. It is expensive but the ingredients and lather are worth the cost.

Thanks!
My techniques changed a lot over the past 2 years so I feel it's fair to dig up another sample pack and give it a crack. I remember Astras being a bit smooth so I'm a bit keen
Looks like I'll have to import the Lavanille, depends how much shipping bites me in the arse but I am curious. If I end up going through with it I'll probably snag a new brush too (helps justify the shipping cost as well).
I've gotten into DE and SE over the summer, quite addictive.
Using a vintage NOS Boker Red Injun, Gillette Fatboy and Slim.
My Brush is a simple Simpsons Berkeley in Best Badger.
Soaps : MLS Kraken + Aftershave Milk, MLS Panty Dropper, B&M Cheshire, B&M Fireside

i've been meaning to try one from Vie-long, but the QC problems prevented me from buying them.

Not scratchy - well, not like boar ones. As I said, for me it is an optimum between boar and badger.Well, you may consider trying Epsilon. It's Spanish-made, and it's quality is superb.
How is the scratchyness?

I really like Astras with my Merkur. iamtootallforthis was nice enough to send me a bunch of blades to try out but I find myself drifting back to Astras. They just really work for me.

My plastic drugstore brush is falling apart, anybody have a good recommendation for something reasonable to replace it?
Am I the only one to find that shaving is annoying ? ;D Currently I can't have what I call a proper "beard", if I let my beard grow it will only be on some part on my face so it's really ugly and I need to shave it everytime it grows. Since I'm extremely lazy I find shaving is annoying :'( Hoping someone here understands me.I understand you. For the great part of my life I thought shaving is annoying and boring. Only when I got introduced to classical wet shaving I found all this - lathering, shaving, etc - could be fun.

Why did you guys let this thread get so stale?
I got an email from West Coast Shaving that they now have their own branded DE razors. They actually look pretty nice. What do you guys think?

I'm no DE expert but the price looks about average with what you might expect to get from Merkur or similar. A lot of the brands are exactly the same model just different prices based on whos name is stamped on it.
I personally prefer the vintage gillettes on ebay. You can get some fairly nice stuff (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1955-Gillette-Safety-Razor-Super-Speed-TTO-DE-Blue-Tip-A2-/111914802035?hash=item1a0ea45b73:g:0MAAAOSwWTRWzRTU) for $15.

Vintage razors look really sweet, but many of them are butterfly and those make me really nervous.

From a pure mechanical standpoint I don't trust the twist-to-open butterfly mechanisms. I know they shouldn't open up while shaving, but when holding sharp implements to my throat I prefer the three-piece design. ^-^
Hmmm ok I can understand that but mine has never opened, and it's hard to explain why but I don't think it would ever open accidentally. Are there reports of that?

No idea, but rational arguments aren't going to stop my irrational fears -- or as I like to pretend "my abundance of caution" :))
I was using the Schick Hydro5 for a while, and then recently (about two months ago) switched to a safety razor. I bought the Van Der Hagen kit at Target and loved the new experience, but it got old pretty fast. It takes me so much longer to shave with a safety razor, and I end up with more irritation and a worse shave. This could honestly just be due to lack of experience. It seems your soap isn't very good. With thick lather from good soap you can lather all your face and shave at your leisure. I can recommend Proraso soap and creams. Maybe it is not the best soap, but it's pretty good and makes thick, slick lather.
For someone like myself who doesn't grow a ton of facial hair and doesn't have to replace blades very often, the Hydro5 works better. It's faster, it shaves closer (so far, since I'm not too experienced with the safety razor), and it's pretty hard to nick my moles.
I still use the safety razor on the weekend, but I don't feel like waking up extra early during the week. It takes like three times as long just because the process of lathering, storing, cleaning, and being extra careful not to slice my face open. I really like going through the process, but it's too much of a hassle when I'm getting ready for work because I'm really not a morning person.
I know a lot of people prefer safety razors, but I'm definitely not ready to completely switch.
I do want to get a Merkur 34C and some good quality shaving soap and see if that makes a difference. The Van Der Hagen stuff seems alright, but I have to only lather my face then shave, then lather my neck then shave, otherwise if I try to lather everything it's usually kinda dry by the time I get to my neck and then I get a ton of irritation.
Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong, but I've watched quite a few nick shaves videos and I don't really see what I'm doing wrong.
how long does it usually take u guys to shave? im a lazy **** that's why i have a beard.

If you face lathering, why don't you experiment with bowl lathering? From my experience it helps with lather quality control, and you can easy experiment with adding water, getting more soap on brush, etc.
Also, I don't say Van der Hagen razor is bad - but if you can, get yourself Merkur, EJ or Muehle. Or Gillette Tech from 1940s or 50s - there are a lot of them on eBay.
P.S. About time for shaving... It's 15-20 minutes for me, but it worth it.

Awesome, thank you for the recommendation. I know that usually you get what you pay for, and $30 for a razor, bowl, soap, and brush is super cheap. The Van der Hagen soap is only like $3 by itself, where as other soaps I've looked into were $10-20. I know price isn't always indicative of quality, but when there's that big of a gap there's gotta be a good reason.
I was looking into some Barrister & Mann soaps, but those were like $16 each. I'll definitely order some Proraso and maybe the Merkur that I've been wanting and hopefully that makes a difference. Might order some different blades too.

Oh, my personal favourites in Proraso soaps are Red and Green - Red has more masculine scent and Green is mentol-scented and has pleasant coolin effect on skin.
And also, by all means, get a sampler blades pack - some blades which works for one man, won't do for another. Astra, Personna, Shark, Gillette 7 O'Clock, etc.

Doesn't the green on have eucalyptus and the red one sandalwood? If so I'll definitely try the green one. Sandalwood is a little bit too heavy for my smell-buds. I love the smell of it, but for the morning I'd like something with eukalyptus, lemon, or something along those lines to help me wake up and feel refreshed throughout the day. So I think I'll go for the green one lol.
Ya I've heard Personna and Gillette 7 O'Clock were the best, but it doesn't hurt to try them all since they're so cheap.
Just got my Merkur 34C and Proraso soap. Noticeably better than the Van Der Hagen stuff. The soap is slicker, and I noticed that the razor curves the blade a little bit so I guess that could make it so I don't have to hold the razor at as much of an angle.Told you. As for myself - I prefer vintage razors, but Mercurs are solid pieces of engineering. And Proraso is not bad either. There are a lot of costlier soaps, but they ain't much better, really. Just more famous/organic/etc.
I use a Phillips Norelco electric shaver. Seems to have an infinite battery life as I rarely charge it :)) never really tried a traditional shaver, those probably get cleaner shavesThey sure are. Especially in the chin and neck area.

BIC Flex 3 (made in Greece) are the only razors I can use. Everything else either cuts up my face or gives me bumps.
Yup!BIC Flex 3 (made in Greece) are the only razors I can use. Everything else either cuts up my face or gives me bumps.
There's something about those Grecian blades! Just ordered another 100 Bic Astors myself.
I have to make my own shaving soap to prevent razor bumps. Every anti bump product makes the bumps worse.
Ingredients:
+ Aloe Vera Gel
+ Lemon Juice (closes my pores for a tighter shave)
+ Antibacterial Hand Soap (just a little for the germs/viscosity)
+ Shower Gel (small amount for viscosity)
+ Baking Soda (for freshness)
Kind of weird that this mixture has works for bumps. Maybe one of you knows my pain and can recommend a shave soap?
I can't use anything with oil added and I needs me some aloe vera.
I guess I could upgrade the ingredients in the future but it would be nice to just buy something that works.
I use a ton of aloe vera to counteract the unnatural soaps. I poked around the internet a bit after writing that and found a few alternatives that might work for me. I think once I upgrade to a better brush I wont have as many issues with oil. The oils in most products cause issues for me since I already have a ton of natural oils. Regardless of how much oil I eat I can't wear breathe right strips. They fall off my nose after a minute.I have to make my own shaving soap to prevent razor bumps. Thats interesting because i would suspect a lot of those products contain irritants. What natural shave soaps have you tried? There are plenty of people with allergies to added perfumes and such that are often added. If its actually the soap you're allergic to and not some irritation from the shave itself, Mike's Natural Unscented is the standard for a great soap with nothing added. A couple others that people swear by would be Paraso's White soap, and Mystic Waters Natural. Its something that has countless posts of discussion on places like badger & blade or straightrazorplace. Have you tried creams? They are often a little more gentle and can be perfect for sensitive skin conditions.
I have a bunch of soaps but they're all scented and such. I do however, have some shaving cream that is no longer made that has some formulas for sensitive, oily, or problematic skin types. Shoot me a PM with your address and I'd be happy to mail you some samples. :thumb:Aw man, that is super awesome of you! My pride won't allow me to accept. The closer it is, the smoother it is for longer. My girlfriend appreciates that fact ;D
Also with a razer its easier to get a clean edge along the neck/cheek line, and easier to do small areas such as around the mouth when dealing with a beard.

Its really not a big deal to me - I'm probably not going to get to it before it goes rancid. I have a huge beard and still have probably 10 years worth of other soaps and creams to get through. Its from Coates (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v68/bobcat50/Miscellaneous%20BC/Shave/Coates6-2014_zpsf3af5a3f.jpg), I bought a 6-pack when they were closing up shop.

Electric razors also have issues with thick hairs. I got a lot of tugging and pulling after using an electric.
It worked great when I was younger but after a year or two it was painful.

but you're suppose to use a trimmer first to make it shorter, then the regular electric razor.
I went to The Art of Shaving last weekend looking for some soaps, brush, stand, and a shallower bowl than the one I have.
F THAT
$30 for soap
$40 for after shave lotion
$60 for a badger brush, $120 for a thicker badger brush
He tried to offer me 20% off, or a kit that basically came with a free soap (still like $175 total).
Uhhhh I'll have to think about it *walk away and never look back*.
Hell, even the more expensive soaps generally are $15-$20. Ain't no way I'm spending $30. And $40 for after shave lotion??? That's ridiculous. The Nivea Sensitive post shave balm is one of the most highly recommended from what I've seen, and only costs like $5 at Target. I guess the brush isn't too much of a ripoff depending on what you're comparing it to because brushes can get very expensive.
They had a Merkur 34C in there and I wanted to see how much they marked it up, but I didn't want to take any more of the guy's time because there was no way I was buying anything in there.
Nivea products (other than the scrub) wreck my face. There are tons of decent alternatives to the most sought after products. I've used a boar hair brush once. The lather I got from it was like frothy milk :(. I think investing in a decent badger brush is the way to go.
I'm going to check out Maggard tonight. Thank you

The lather I got from it was like frothy milk :(. I think investing in a decent badger brush is the way to go.I have Omega boar brush, and also Epsilon hoese and badger Zenith one. And i must say that I use everyday mainly boar and horse brushes. Badger brush I found to be great for face lathering, but I prefer bowl lathering. As for lather - first you need a decent amount of soap/cream on a wet brush, soaked in warm water, then add some water in a bowl (on the fingertips) and begin to make lather. If there are too little of it or it is too thick, add some more.

I don't think the brush is the issue. Sounds like too much water in the lather. A badger brush is still a great brush though but I get great lathers with my badger brush.
Maggards has everything you could need though wet shaving wise.
