Title: Shaving, Razors, etc. What you use?
Post by: mougrim on Sun, 25 October 2015, 03:10:57
So. I got fed with modern 3-4-5-infinity cartridge razor. First, they begun to cost a little fortune to me, as cartriges for them are crap and need to be replaced often. Second, the're near to impossibe to clean shave with, and even if you manage it, you'll get a nice big irritation.

So. I thew all this contraptions in the trash, and got myself Muehle R89, brush, some DE blades to try and shaving soap.

And - it totally worth it. Cleaner shaving with less irritation.

And looks cool too. Look at this chromed brass beauty...

Muhle r41 in rose gold mostly. I have a Merker laying around and a straight as well that I occasionally use. Still going through the thousand or so Astra blades I bought for like nine bucks off Amazon... So much cheaper than that Gillete crap!

Edit: Autocorrect is crap.

Well, I'm keen to try r41, and Muehle even sell replacement head to convert r89 to r41, but I'll wait for a month or so - i still need to weed out quite a few bad shaving habits. R89 is quite forgiving, but r41 might not be so.

As for Astra blades - I'll try them. Have a set of blades to try - Shark, Derby, Feather, Bic, Astra...

If you're not this committed but still want to save money, I highly recommend Dollar Shave Club's 4-blade razor and shave butter. I'm on the every 2 months plan and I still end up with a stockpile of extra blades.

I might be on the lazy side, for me razor takes a lot of my morning time
so I use the easy fast shaver, Braun is the only one to go

Well, you can get decent DE blades for as low as half a dollar/dollar a pack. And you can shave with one blade for about a week. Well, plus-minus day or two.

Well, I use an electric shaver, but only when I travelling. I found that I cannot get a clean shave with it - no matters how good the brand is.

I can tell that it has different result between people, from what I know the thickness of beard/hair you grow really makes the difference
for me it works very well, I use Braun series 7

Well, I'm glad that for you this is the case. But, alas, for me it was only half-decent shaving with constant redness of the skin. So - I tried rotor and "net" electric shavers, then spent a lot on various cartrige razors, and returned to T-shape razors in the end.

P.S. Actually I tried Braun and it was quite good. If not for my sensitive skin...

I prefer Astra blades as well but iamtootallwiththis keeps hooking it up with new blades and shave soaps. Right now I really like Barrister and Mann's Limon Latha.

It's the only setup I've found that doesn't tear my face apart. Gillette blades are nice and all, but they're so expensive I was using them for way too long which is worse.

I've been rocking an Edwin Jagger DE89 on a short handle with Kai blade for the last year and have loved it.  I used to be an electric shaver for years, but wet shaving with a DE razor has been great.

My recommendation is to get an intermediate razor like an 89 and get a sampler of the nicer blades to find the combination of blade and razor that works for you. I found that Feather blades were too aggressive, but the Russian made Astra and Gillette blades would pull rather than get a clean cut on my hair.

Second recommendation would be to get a good triple-milled soap rather than a cream. It'll save you some money in the long run, and is only slightly less convenient.

Also using an Edwin Jagger, DE89L with a Feather blade. Before that used a Merkur Barber Pole and before that was a Merkur 23C long handle.

I second the sampler pack of blades if you're newer to wet shaving. I went through probably 10 different kinds of blades before finding that Feather worked best for me.

I usually use soaps but am currently trying the Cella shaving creme and it's working out quite well. I'm using a generic boar brush for now.

If I was still traveling a lot I would probably go with a good shaving creme, but with my recent change to zero work travel I'm loving D.R. Harris soaps.

On the brush I spent a little more for a firmer finest badger brush.

Have you tried a shorter handle before? I've been tempted to get a longer one to compare.

I use a Braun electric razor with its own self-cleaning dock.

It works really great, but I have to buy cleaning fluid cartridges for the dock every few months.

I would love to try a traditional razor, but it is almost intimidating to think about it. ^-^

Nah, it's nothing to fear. Just begin with non-agressive razor like Muehle r89 or Edwin Jagger DE89.

I got the shaving creme from Amazon and it was priced right. I decided on it against the D.R. Harris soaps which is next on my tryouts list.

I've been looking into a better brush. I just haven't decided what I think I need or want. I just know I need to go softer.

The EJ I'm using now is the shortest handle I've used and I definitely prefer it. I feel like I have better control and more finesse.

None, I would rather have a beard than shave.

Though when I was in the Navy, I used a combination depending on what I needed to shave for.

When I would shave every day during the week, I used a double edged safety razor with everyday blades from a local drug store.  If I had to have a really close shave for an inspection or event of some sort, I would use that, then a quick shave with a Mach 3.

The Mach 3 gave me a very close shave, but to much irritation for every day use.  the one exception was when I was underway on the ship.  There I used a Mach 3 everyday straight out of the shower to minimize the irritation.

You're looking on a 50 bucks or so for a decent razor (in my opinion, you can not do wrong with aforementioned Muhle or Edwin Jagger -  they're of superb quality), a pack of a blades to try (diffetent kinds) - about ten bucks, brush (synthetic or hog will be OK for beginner, but you can go for badger at once) - 10-20 bucks, good shaving soap (try Proraso - it's good and pretty cheap). All in all, be ready to spent up to 100 USD.

You can spent less, go for Lord, or, god forbid, Weishi razor, but if you're want to save a few bucks, it's better to go without shaving soap and brush and use your current shaving foam or cream. But good razor is good razor.

I am always willing to spend a few extra dollars on the good stuff, and this seems to be a fair investment towards something different. I'll look around and post back if I do get into it. ^-^

Yep. You right on it. Oh, and if you'll buy natural brush - get stand for it, when it will be drying upside-down. It helps to prolong its "life". Plastic ones cost about 3 bucks.

If you really wanted to spend less, I wouldn't even recommend going without the soap/brush (it really does make a difference in how easily the blade glides across your face) - I would recommend checking the classifieds on a site like badgerandblade.com. Seriously, it's a site worth checking out anyways if you are interested in getting into traditional wet shaving - a lot of experienced people always willing to help and give advice.

Well, when you a newbie, you can't be sure you'll like Astra. So I advise a sample pack with first kit. And then yes, buying you favourite blades in a bulk saves your monies.

I use a kamisori. I also have an old super speed if I don't have time to strop.

There are places that offer sample packs of DE blades. I got a sampler many years ago from bullgoose shaving. It was something like 20 bucks for 10 different brands. Totally worth it. The blade/handle/face combo is important for long term happiness.

I use my grandfather's old Gillette Fat Boy DE handle. Old Safari brush and mug. All I paid for was blades (feather) and soap (new old stock Safari, then Taylor of Old Bond's on close out). I'm spending about $20 for a year's worth of shaving, or less, since I have some left over.

Don't think I can get it any cheaper than this.

I haven't used a nice western straight razor, so a comparison is probably not possible.  Theoretically, a single bevel razor can be honed to a finer angle than a double hollow ground blade.  Generally, I am a huge fan of Japanese cutlery which is a lot of why I went this direction.

It is a little odd at first not being able to use your other hand, or flip the blade around.  Some strokes, like going against the grain on my left cheek, are somewhat awkward.  I do appreciate the narrowness of the blade, and the feel of the whole thing.  The very hard steel, and larger surface does make it a pain to hone.  I'm actually in need of a different stone, and am currently shopping for a reasonably priced nakayama (which is a real challenge).

tl;dr: I like it, but it's a real commitment.

OK, now I officially like Feather blades. They're really smooth and nice - gave me pretty clean shave with only one nick - and that one due to mine lack of experence.

Also, for me Proraso Red worked better than Green. I found it more smooth and better smelling - although I like cooling effect of Green.

I use a Merkur 38c. I own two of TryABlade's Top 10 Samplers. I've gone through one and am on the second run through. I bought a pack of 100 Racer blades since I race cross country and track and I enjoyed the name. It's in my top 5 favorite blades, but it's sitting at 5th-ish.

I also have a Shumate's Ben Hur straight razor I use on my cheeks when I have a few weeks worth of growth going that I need to shave off. Still haven't manned up and used it under the corners of my jaw. I have used it on my neck and under my chin once. Unfortunately, I don't know the size on this.... It was honed and sold by someone on Reddit.

I started using a straight razor from the art of shaving a few years ago. It's a little time consuming at first, but once you get comfortable dragging a sharp knife across your face it doesn't take much longer than a regular razor.  It's weirdly relaxing now and I quite enjoy the whole process.

It's also not a great time sink for me because I can go a couple of days without shaving and won't look like a haggard mess.

Taylor of Old Bond Street are my go to for soaps, creams, aftershave etc

and the products last for many many months :)

Heard it's good, even if a bit pricey.

maggardrazors.com (http://maggardrazors.com) has samplers of a lot of different soaps if you're ever looking to try anything out.
Thanks! I'll check it someday. For now, I'll stick to what is readily available in my country, though. And those two 150ml jars of soap I have will go for a long way :)

Oh, and this site have a nice starter kit with EJ razor for under a 100 bucks.

Exactly! Although I tend to use my DE safety razor, it doesn't take any longer than a proper cartridge shave for me. The process is hugely relaxing to me as well. I looked forward to shaving with my cartridge razor, but it's even more fun with the DE/straight now. I'm trying to grow out some facial hair, and all I can think about is how fun it's going to be to shave off with my straight razor.

I've always been interested in switching to a safety razor with a nice German handle but currently I too use Dollar Shave Club. I usually do the every month for 3-4 months and then cancel for the rest of the year...end up with enough razors in that time period for 2 people for the rest of the year and spent less than one Gillette refill package.

Well, it's not all about price of shaving, but about feeling too. As with the keyboards ;)

Also, for me Proraso Red worked better than Green. I found it more smooth and better smelling - although I like cooling effect of Green.

I started with Proraso Green and moved to DR Harris. The Proraso soap bowls lasted me maybe 3 months (I'm an every-other-day shaver), but I'm 5 months in on the DR Harris and am maybe one-third through. So even though they're a little more costly up front they last quite a bit longer.

What's your favorite soap brand/scent?

Shea Moisture Men's Utility Soap is my go-to most days just because of how comfortable it is to use.  My wife loves the smell, it's got nothing weird in it, and my skin is happy afterward.

No offence here Well, I can buy most of the popular soaps here and abroad, just not in US stores - because of shipping cost. But there are a lot of European sellers and best DE razors are German anyway

I have not heard of them. If you're looking for a quality DE razor to try out the hobby with, I'd recommend an Edwin Jaggar DE89. They seem to have a great following. Most people will recommend the DE89 or Merkur's 34c to beginners. The latter being a slightly larger cost, but generally a slight upgrade. I use a Merkur 38c. It was my first DE as well. I prefer the slightly longer handle than the 34c, but that's just me.

Already have Muhle R89. As for this Schmidt razor - I googled about it, and people say the quality of the head is a bit lower than Jagger/Muehle, but still pretty decent. And it have a nice big handle. Maybe I'll buy it... Even if just for handle ;)

Ohh, then definitely give it a try! The handle does look really nice. It certainly seems like a good product, especially for that price. If the handle/bottom part of my razor weren't one piece, I might consider picking up a different handle for it.

I'd say go for it.  Price seems quite reasonable.  I don't think it's that big of a deal that the handle is smooth.  I'd prefer texture of course, but I don't think you will die.

I've got some random DE razor I got off Amazon and it does the job. I was using Colonel Conk shave soap in the Bay Rum scent, but I've been using some Jack Black shave butter recently. As for blades, I have a ton of Derby and Sharks, and I much prefer the Sharks. I feel like I get a better shave and they stay sharp longer.

Yep, I was shocked to even see that he used an electric once.  Still kinda cool to know my little old shaver is a 'Bond' merchandise that has its own web page.  :thumb:

Is Maggard razors handles and heads any good? They have some pretty cheap heads and nice-looking all-stainless-steel handles on their site.

The tolerances on the head were bad. But the handles are pretty nice. I'm using a Maggard Razor handle with a Merkur 34c head.

Lately I've been using Super Iridiums over Feather/7 o'clock. Very smooth and not as dangerous as using Feather.

Tried that supposedly "scary" Feathers last week. They gave me pretty smooth and clean shaving. I used them in a mild closed comb, though.

I almost always nick my chin with Feather. It's just _too_ sharp for me.

Well, my facehair is pretty hard and wiry, so I have a problems to shave it off even with a Feather. No nicks, though - only on the upper lip when I tried to shave it against the grain. It was a bad, bad idea :)

I shave my head and face 3 times a week with a Gilette Fusion Proglide dealy. My hair (what is left of it) is very thin, while my facial hair is extremely thick and stubborn. If my shaving cream is really foamy and not wet, the razor clogs the **** up every two seconds and I have to bash it against the sink to get the hair out before my next stroke. I end up throwing out the bottom 25% of every shaving cream can because it gets too fluffy.

What can I do? Can I go straight-razor? Different cream?

I use a double edged safety razor to clean up my haircuts and shave. I really like that with a brush and shaving soap (not the shaving cream can). I used to use the DE safety razors with the cream from a can but I found the shaves weren't that great. If you're not ready to make the jump to razors, I'd try grabbing a cheap boar hair brush and some shaving soap from Art of Shaving or somewhere cheap.

Or I could just throw some shaving supplies in the package I'll be sending your way. I'll do that. Soaps and brush. You'll have to find an old cup. And you'll have to pickup your own DE and blades if you want that since I don't have extras.

I don't know why people use the canned stuff, soap and a brush cheaper/better/longer lasting.

I went to the art of shaving a bunch before I realized how overpriced it all was. Then I found the reddit community for wicked edge and ended up getting 2 straight edge razors and a double edge. Love it! It's a Merkur double edge that I use mainly. I'm living in the middle east so a beard is required, but for the neck / cheek bones I use the Merkur.

Happy customer plug. Move done most of my business with Phil at bullgoose shaving and he's always been very helpful.

I've been thinking about the plunge into Straights but still chicken that I'd make the bathroom look like a slasher movie.  that and the work of keeping it sharp.  But since I sometime have a few days growth of heavy beard when I shave now I've been wondering if it's a better tool for me now.

Yes! I use a Merkur 38c as well. I love the soothing, relaxing feeling. And the shave is pretty incredible too.

What blades are you using?

Astra platinum. Got a 100 pack and they work really well. I think I'm gonna move up in sharpness once I run out. Probably some Feathers

Tried Astra today. Nice. So far one of the smoothest shaves I had. And pretty clean too. Not THE cleanest, but not bad.

Heck yes. Do it! The Feather razor blade I shaved with just astounded me. The Gillette's I've used provided a marvelous shave as well. The best stuff they make is the double edge razor blades (I shaved with a Gillette Silver Blue blade tonight). I'm a bit bummed that I bought a 100 pack of Racers now, but I still enjoy the name and shave. As soon as I finish my last sampler (more shaves on this Gillette blade and then about 4 more blades including a Feather and Gillette 7 O'Clock), I'll use the Racer's up. I'll most likely replace them with Feathers or some Gillette blade.

You should try DE razors. You can get a decend Gillette Tech on ebay for 20-30 bucks. Blades are cheap, and my dad gets about three weeks of shaving from one. Me - about week.

Yes, what he said.  It is so much more of a pleasurable experience, and yet I never knew how cheap shaving could get until I started using a DE.  100 blades for like $9 I think.  Bonkers.

I tend to shave with a Red Tip Gillette DE razor with Derby Blades. Though I tend to rotate among hard soaps and creams for my shaves.

Derby blades can usually be found for a good price in many places.

+1 I've been working my way through a box of Astra Platinum and they've been working great. Had a sample pack with Feathers in it before and enjoyed them too though.

I have some simple double-edge safety razor, can't remember the model. Suits me fine though, much better than disposables. I'm not crazy about shaving but it's nice to have something built well.

Been using feathers for over a year now, tried other brands, Astra, Personna, Derby, Treet, nothing else springs to mind. But none have felt as comfy as a feather has with the hair I have.

I use a Merkur Solingen, it's alright, feathers aren't sitting well lately as one sides shaving far better than the other.. Or that's normal and I've been doing something wrong this entire time, definitely not ruling that one out :G

Oh also finishing up a block of geo f. trumper's rose shaving soap, love the smell.

Welcome to geekhack!

A ton of people love feathers and praise them, but for me at least Astras in my Slim Adjustable are the best.

If you love that floral scent, check out Lavanille by Barrister and Mann. It is expensive but the ingredients and lather are worth the cost.

My techniques changed a lot over the past 2 years so I feel it's fair to dig up another sample pack and give it a crack. I remember Astras being a bit smooth so I'm a bit keen

Looks like I'll have to import the Lavanille, depends how much shipping bites me in the arse but I am curious. If I end up going through with it I'll probably snag a new brush too (helps justify the shipping cost as well).

its funny how many interests overlap within a group... mech keyboards, fountain pens, wet shaving...

I've been wrapped up with the straight razor communities for a few years now. I have quite a few straights, soaps, brushes, etc. Love it but I also have a big beard so although i'm into restoring and using straights I only shave my neck and cheeks. I also have a gillette slim DE and a cheap synthetic brush for travel.

Order something from maggardrazors.com

Boar brushes are great and cheap. The synthetic brushes are solid and the badger are great if you want a little step up.

Am I the only one to find that shaving is annoying ?  ;D Currently I can't have what I call a proper "beard", if I let my beard grow it will only be on some part on my face so it's really ugly and I need to shave it everytime it grows. Since I'm extremely lazy I find shaving is annoying  :'( Hoping someone here understands me.

I understand you. For the great part of my life I thought shaving is annoying and boring. Only when I got introduced to classical wet shaving I found all this - lathering, shaving, etc - could be fun.

I have to wait some years to have a "full beard" will see if shaving will become a fun activity to me  ;D

I hope thats not true. If so, don't despair as you are probably evolutionally advanced from the rest of us hairy folk.

I occasionally see these poor guys that have made an attempt at the current fashion trend of 'lumbersexual' and no one informed them that if you cant grow a full beard in a month, you probably have a pretty sad, thin, looking beard. Like this unlucky guy, he should just shave:

Why did you guys let this thread get so stale?

I got an email from West Coast Shaving that they now have their own branded DE razors.  They actually look pretty nice.  What do you guys think?

I like the look of the Black on Track. I've been thinking about getting a slightly more aggressive razor than my DE89.

I'm no DE expert but the price looks about average with what you might expect to get from Merkur or similar. A lot of the brands are exactly the same model just different prices based on whos name is stamped on it.
I personally prefer the vintage gillettes on ebay. You can get some fairly nice stuff (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1955-Gillette-Safety-Razor-Super-Speed-TTO-DE-Blue-Tip-A2-/111914802035?hash=item1a0ea45b73:g:0MAAAOSwWTRWzRTU) for $15.

Vintage razors look really sweet, but many of them are butterfly and those make me really nervous.

From a pure mechanical standpoint I don't trust the twist-to-open butterfly mechanisms. I know they shouldn't open up while shaving, but when holding sharp implements to my throat I prefer the three-piece design.  ^-^

Hmmm ok I can understand that but mine has never opened, and it's hard to explain why but I don't think it would ever open accidentally.  Are there reports of that?

I was using the Schick Hydro5 for a while, and then recently (about two months ago) switched to a safety razor. I bought the Van Der Hagen kit at Target and loved the new experience, but it got old pretty fast. It takes me so much longer to shave with a safety razor, and I end up with more irritation and a worse shave. This could honestly just be due to lack of experience.

For someone like myself who doesn't grow a ton of facial hair and doesn't have to replace blades very often, the Hydro5 works better. It's faster, it shaves closer (so far, since I'm not too experienced with the safety razor), and it's pretty hard to nick my moles.

I still use the safety razor on the weekend, but I don't feel like waking up extra early during the week. It takes like three times as long just because the process of lathering, storing, cleaning, and being extra careful not to slice my face open. I really like going through the process, but it's too much of a hassle when I'm getting ready for work because I'm really not a morning person.

I know a lot of people prefer safety razors, but I'm definitely not ready to completely switch.

I do want to get a Merkur 34C and some good quality shaving soap and see if that makes a difference. The Van Der Hagen stuff seems alright, but I have to only lather my face then shave, then lather my neck then shave, otherwise if I try to lather everything it's usually kinda dry by the time I get to my neck and then I get a ton of irritation.

Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong, but I've watched quite a few nick shaves videos and I don't really see what I'm doing wrong.

It seems your soap isn't very good. With thick lather from good soap you can lather all your face and shave at your leisure. I can recommend Proraso soap and creams. Maybe it is not the best soap, but it's pretty good and makes thick, slick lather.

If you face lathering, why don't you experiment with bowl lathering? From my experience it helps with lather quality control, and you can easy experiment with adding water, getting more soap on brush, etc.

Also, I don't say Van der Hagen razor is bad - but if you can, get yourself Merkur, EJ or Muehle. Or Gillette Tech from 1940s or 50s - there are a lot of them on eBay.

P.S. About time for shaving... It's 15-20 minutes for me, but it worth it.

I have a beard, but I still have to trim the neck/cheek line every couple of days. Probably like ten minutes for a regular shave, 20 minutes or so for shave and trim at home.

Awesome, thank you for the recommendation. I know that usually you get what you pay for, and $30 for a razor, bowl, soap, and brush is super cheap. The Van der Hagen soap is only like $3 by itself, where as other soaps I've looked into were $10-20. I know price isn't always indicative of quality, but when there's that big of a gap there's gotta be a good reason.

I was looking into some Barrister & Mann soaps, but those were like $16 each. I'll definitely order some Proraso and maybe the Merkur that I've been wanting and hopefully that makes a difference. Might order some different blades too.

You might want to order a sampler pack of blades; sometimes I think people underestimate how the different blades behave when shaving.  Some are just too sharp for people, others too aggressive a bevel, etc.

Well, you right - decent soap costs about 10 bucks, and any soap above 20, IMO, way overpriced. But there are exceptions - this Wednesday got MEM olive shaving cream from friend in Israel - it makes thick and slick lather, good for my skin and it's price just 10 shekels (about 2 and a half bucks). But, alas, when imported to, say, USA, it price soaring to 10 or 12 dollars. Worth to try anyway, IMHO - but after Proraso.

Oh, my personal favourites in Proraso soaps are Red and Green - Red has more masculine scent and Green is mentol-scented and has pleasant coolin effect on skin.

And also, by all means, get a sampler blades pack - some blades which works for one man, won't do for another. Astra, Personna, Shark, Gillette 7 O'Clock, etc.

Doesn't the green on have eucalyptus and the red one sandalwood? If so I'll definitely try the green one. Sandalwood is a little bit too heavy for my smell-buds. I love the smell of it, but for the morning I'd like something with eukalyptus, lemon, or something along those lines to help me wake up and feel refreshed throughout the day. So I think I'll go for the green one lol.

Ya I've heard Personna and Gillette 7 O'Clock were the best, but it doesn't hurt to try them all since they're so cheap.

Yep, you right about scents. Eucalipt/menthol and sandalwood.

Try a lot of blades and pick one you liked best ;)

Just got my Merkur 34C and Proraso soap. Noticeably better than the Van Der Hagen stuff. The soap is slicker, and I noticed that the razor curves the blade a little bit so I guess that could make it so I don't have to hold the razor at as much of an angle.

Well for daily shaving needs/ I usually use a baun electric shaver, but my problem is I've got really coarse facial hair ( Arab genes )  so it takes quite some time to really get a clean look. otherwise I just use a generic straight razor with half-blades from shark. each blade lasts me for 2 shaves max! What I really care about is the quality of the badger & the cream you use ( I use a Porter's Badger thats made in Bozeman, MT ) used to live there so thats always a friendly memento and Proraso cream, the stuff smells good and its works well with my skin. If i'm feeling extra lazy, our friendly neighborhood barbershop has a BYO straight razor policy  :p

Told you. As for myself - I prefer vintage razors, but Mercurs are solid pieces of engineering. And Proraso is not bad either. There are a lot of costlier soaps, but they ain't much better, really. Just more famous/organic/etc.

B&M are totally worth the money. The quality of ingredients and performance prove it. I can't speak highly enough of them.

Their new latha line performs just as well but is formulated so that it is lower priced.

I have to make my own shaving soap to prevent razor bumps. Every anti bump product makes the bumps worse.

Ingredients:
+ Aloe Vera Gel
+ Lemon Juice (closes my pores for a tighter shave)
+ Antibacterial Hand Soap (just a little for the germs/viscosity)
+ Shower Gel (small amount for viscosity)
+ Baking Soda (for freshness)

Kind of weird that this mixture has works for bumps. Maybe one of you knows my pain and can recommend a shave soap?

I can't use anything with oil added and I needs me some aloe vera.

I guess I could upgrade the ingredients in the future but it would be nice to just buy something that works.

I use this one most of the time: http://www.colconkproducts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=19

Tried a few of their other soaps and just really like that one. I have a super sensitive neck and that soaps seems to do the trick.

Neat thread.  Cool that it evolved into a discussion about old school shaving styles.
For daily use, I now just use a foamy canned shave cream and a Feather AC DX, non-folding.  It's quick and gives a nice clean shave - even with just a single pass.  No stropping with the swap-out blade (I use Captain Excelia blades).  If I decide to use a DE for whatever reason, I use a Slant with a Feather blade.  Nice and close, but not as good as the straight.
I have a bunch of straights - my favorites are a couple of Filarmonicas which I very rarely use anymore.  But they give great shaves.

BIC Flex 3 (made in Greece) are the only razors I can use. Everything else either cuts up my face or gives me bumps.

There's something about those Grecian blades! Just ordered another 100 Bic Astors myself.

I use the gillette venus embrace. Though I don't have facial hair, so I can't verify how it works on that...

Thats interesting because i would suspect a lot of those products contain irritants. What natural shave soaps have you tried? There are plenty of people with allergies to added perfumes and such that are often added. If its actually the soap you're allergic to and not some irritation from the shave itself, Mike's Natural Unscented is the standard for a great soap with nothing added. A couple others that people swear by would be Paraso's White soap, and Mystic Waters Natural. Its something that has countless posts of discussion on places like badger & blade or straightrazorplace. Have you tried creams? They are often a little more gentle and can be perfect for sensitive skin conditions.

I use a ton of aloe vera to counteract the unnatural soaps. I poked around the internet a bit after writing that and found a few alternatives that might work for me. I think once I upgrade to a better brush I wont have as many issues with oil. The oils in most products cause issues for me since I already have a ton of natural oils. Regardless of how much oil I eat I can't wear breathe right strips. They fall off my nose after a minute.

I've tried Paraso's sensitive skin formula, and that worked OK. I'm fine with scents. I can't use aftershave or pre shave oils so aloe vera is essential for me. I didn't realize it was the oils causing the problems until I used an Art Of Shaving kit my gf at the time bought me. Pre shave oil wrecked me.

I'll upgrade my equipment and try some soaps with tons of aloe vera and report back with the results.

I have a bunch of soaps but they're all scented and such. I do however, have some shaving cream that is no longer made that has some formulas for sensitive, oily, or problematic skin types. Shoot me a PM with your address and I'd be happy to mail you some samples.  :thumb:

I don't have to shave much but I was recently given a safety razor. I do not recall the name and there isn't anything on it to identify its brand. It's pretty nice though. Blades are a lot cheaper.

The closer it is, the smoother it is for longer. My girlfriend appreciates that fact  ;D
Also with a razer its easier to get a clean edge along the neck/cheek line, and easier to do small areas such as around the mouth when dealing with a beard.

I wanted to love my Norelco. I have a wet dry circular thing, I tried TP.. I really did  :'(

My experience is that I have to make so many passes with an electric razor it grinds the oils into my face in the process. I'm the kind of guy that can use orange pumice on my face and still have some oil left over

Its really not a big deal to me - I'm probably not going to get to it before it goes rancid. I have a huge beard and still have probably 10 years worth of other soaps and creams to get through. Its from Coates (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v68/bobcat50/Miscellaneous%20BC/Shave/Coates6-2014_zpsf3af5a3f.jpg), I bought a 6-pack when they were closing up shop.

Yup. As you said.

Electric razors also have issues with thick hairs. I got a lot of tugging and pulling after using an electric.

It worked great when I was younger but after a year or two it was painful.

but you're suppose to use a trimmer first to make it shorter, then the regular electric razor.

I went to The Art of Shaving last weekend looking for some soaps, brush, stand, and a shallower bowl than the one I have.

F THAT

$30 for soap
$40 for after shave lotion
$60 for a badger brush, $120 for a thicker badger brush

He tried to offer me 20% off, or a kit that basically came with a free soap (still like $175 total).

Uhhhh I'll have to think about it *walk away and never look back*.

Hell, even the more expensive soaps generally are $15-$20. Ain't no way I'm spending $30. And $40 for after shave lotion??? That's ridiculous. The Nivea Sensitive post shave balm is one of the most highly recommended from what I've seen, and only costs like $5 at Target. I guess the brush isn't too much of a ripoff depending on what you're comparing it to because brushes can get very expensive.

They had a Merkur 34C in there and I wanted to see how much they marked it up, but I didn't want to take any more of the guy's time because there was no way I was buying anything in there.

Use online stores. Maggard Razors is my go to. (Yes, I will continue to recommend them considering their great service and fast shipping times.)

Nivea products (other than the scrub) wreck my face. There are tons of decent alternatives to the most sought after products. I've used a boar hair brush once. The lather I got from it was like frothy milk :(. I think investing in a decent badger brush is the way to go.

I'm going to check out Maggard tonight. Thank you

I don't think the brush is the issue. Sounds like too much water in the lather. A badger brush is still a great brush though but I get great lathers with my badger brush.

Maggards has everything you could need though wet shaving wise.

I have Omega boar brush, and also Epsilon hoese and badger Zenith one. And i must say that I use everyday mainly boar and horse brushes. Badger brush I found to be great for face lathering, but I prefer bowl lathering. As for lather - first you need a decent amount of soap/cream on a wet brush, soaked in warm water, then add some water in a bowl (on the fingertips) and begin to make lather. If there are too little of it or it is too thick, add some more.

I've been using a Safety Razor, specifically a Merkur Progress to shave.  It holds a double edge razor blade.
The japanese razor blade company "Feather" makes outstanding blades that last a few weeks then you replace it.
It's way less expensive than buying Gilette or Mach 8 cartridges.

But seriously... a brush? Don't that get nasty and all after time passes? I like to use shaving cream and replace my blades once a month max.
