Interesting, it's the first RGB Topre clone I've ever seen. I've never personally tried the Royal Kludge switches though, and the RGB backlight looks mediocre at absolute best.

Thinking about it. I wish it was 45g switches. Not positive on the 55g at the moment. I'm an MX reds man and used to lightweight switches.

If you're going for your first topre experience, I would go with real topre if you can afford it. This is more of an experimental thing.

You do realize these aren't exactly new right? They've been reviewed and we'll received.

Even with RGB?

Pretty sure people were trying the RGB ones first.

I had no idea! I was worried that adding RGB lighting might have affected how they designed the switch like it did on the earlier K70's, but I didn't realize people had already demoed RGB models.

The RGB lighting isn't new, I noticed the drop said V2 so it's possible something is different but as far as the backlighting goes expect to see even Type Heavens coming soon with that feature.

I'm less interested in a real Topre and more interested in an economically priced keyboard with Topre switches that I can put Cherry compatible keycaps on, given I'm likely delving into at least 2-3 SA sets in the upcoming months.
I might eventually delve into Topre more fully and buy a Realforce board but that price is a heavy driving force in keeping me away - particularly when I'm interested in the Axios and would focus money there first. The Kludge would be a cheap enough purchase that I wouldn't overly worry about it.

This sounds like it would actually be a pretty great choice then. If you're ok with 45g the Novatouch isn't that ridiculous either.

I wasn't overly impressed with SA on a royal kludge, but the royal kludge itself is a decent board.

I would take the royal kludge over novatouch any day.

I've heard at least a couple people mention that. I'm curious, but wondering about the 55g switches. I'm normally working on MX reds at home and am used to light switches. Blacks fatigued me after a while so I'm wondering if the 55g Topres will also cause the fatigue.
Worst case, I keep storing up Amazon credit and basically get a NovaTouch for free eventually.

There's so much personal preference and the feeling changes depending on what caps you use also.

At first glance, there appear to be two noticeable differences with the Gen 2 model. First is a translucent housing around the plunger, presumably to let the light shine through better. Second is an additional lighting zone that goes around the outside of the alphanumeric cluster from Esc, across the bottom row, and ending at backspace. Evolutionary changes, to be sure, but the price is still very good.

What's different about SA caps on a Royal Kludge? I'm also getting a few SA sets and was wondering about this board vs. the Novatouch.
Someone posted a video on reddit of their modded v1 and it sounds really nice.

Again it's probably more personal preference, it just wasn't my thing.

But was it how they looked? How they felt?

I just didn't care for the overall experience with SA caps.
I like the royal kludge with the thick Leopold pbt caps.
-
just be sure to remove the pre-installed o-rings if you buy a kludge, it's a decent value purchase after they're off.
-
If I've never tried a Topre board at all, is this a decent option to try first? I know it's not real Topre switches, but it also isn't $200 for a board I may not like.

Tell me more? I didn't see any o-rings on mine.

How about SA caps on the Novatouch? Have you had an opportunity to try that combination out?
-
Will probably have to pass, but lets say I got one, and put a quality set of thick caps on it. Would I be disappointed if I tried this side by side with a 55G switch realforce? Also how would it compare to a typeheaven (my only experience with topre).

It's no realforce but its cheaper and uses MX caps, unless you have a 55g realforce then you don't have to worry about making a comparison. :D
To me the type heaven is underated, I'm curious to see what the new type heaven with mx compatible stems is like.
I also like the royal kludge for its thin bezel compared to realforce boards.

I think I'm gonna pick one up at that price and see how thocky I can get it. Looks like the perfect board to put more keycaps on.
-
I do remember seeing this particular keyboard (V1) on massdrop a while back, its not new by any means. But it does look interesting. A much cheaper alternative to topre's and I'm definitely interested in them as I haven't tried topre's myself.
It kinda sounds like its rubbing on something while the key is being depressed and I'm kinda attracted to that. Looks Sounds like it feels good
