Title: Gateron Clears or Reds :O
Post by: Harms on Mon, 02 November 2015, 23:31:44
Hey guys I'm considering getting the Varmilo VA87MR. But, not sure what switch to get. Its going to be either Gateron Clears or Reds. I think I will like having a lighter linear switch but at the same time I don't want it to be like way to light. It may sound contradictory :P But yea, right now I have MX reds and think I can go lighter. Do any of u have Gateron Clears? If so how do you like them?

A buddy has a board with Clears. They are insanely soft. I played a game with a friend and he kept randomly pressing buttons. I typed on it a bit, and it was too soft for me. I like reds and browns, but don't think I could do Gateron clears for anything other than maybe gaming and even then it would take a bit of getting used to.

perhaps a ergo clear would fit

tried red, i didnt like it at all, it felt like i was pushing mush, a dead lifeless button

browns have more spunk, which is why i'm dying to try out zealios/ergo clears

I was in the same boat as you. I thought I could go lighter, but turn out I hate it, It just too light.

Gateron Reds are what MX Reds were meant to be. Get those  :thumb:

Clears are just too light IMO.

35g is a bit too light. I stand behind linear switches all the way. I use gaterons clears in my other board but personally so far my fav are linear grey stems from cherry with sprit 50g springs.

I would be curious if Gateron Clears + DSA (smaller footprint) might help with typing.

Thanks for all the input guys I think Ill just go with Gateron Reds :). However, instead of making a new thread I'll just ask here. How much a difference in smoothness do you find in Stock Gateron Red vs Stock MX Red

Good call keeping it in the thread lol

Gateron Reds are a lot smoother than MX Reds. They are also just a bit heavier to the touch despite having the same weight (I think), but I believe this is due to the better housing quality.

I'm currently using a VA87MR with Gateron clears and have a KBParadise V80 with MX reds nearby. The Gaterons are much smoother than any Cherry MX switch I've tried, but these clears are insanely light. I would not recommend them for even occasional typing unless you are very sensitive to spring weight. They're OK to game on, at least in the very limited time I've tried it.

I'd say you made the smart choice in going with the red Gaterons.

Gatorade clears are 10g lighter than mx reds

Aesthetically id go with clears and custom springs.

Not to derail the the OP - but since we are discussing Gateron Linears do any of you know the reasoning behind the yellow switch?  At one point it was thought of as a Super MX Black clone but that has been debunked; the specs state it as exactly the same as Gateron Blacks.
