Title: [IC]TGR-Jane CE
Post by: yuktsi on Tue, 03 November 2015, 08:04:28

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will share about the my findings from samples made of different aluminum, i.e. Alcoa Mic 6, 6061 and 7075, some comparisons and why I decided to use 7075 for the next batch, some major improvements over the last run (such as the wrapping issues, the gap, the finishing of the brass, etc.), changes in design, price of the kit and delivery period.

The groupbuy should start next week if nothing goes wrong, in order to have the board delivered before Christmas. Stay tuned!

Material selection

from top: 6061, Mic 6, 7075

6061 is one of the most common aluminum alloys used for Korean keyboard, being economical, reasonably high strength and easy to machine. While 7075 does offer a much better mechanical properties compared to 6061, but many do agree that the additional strength is not needed for the usage of mechanical keyboard case. Alcoa Mic 6 on the hand, is best known for its good stress relieving properties, commonly used to machine parts that require high accuracy.

tl;dr

- stregth
7075 > 6061 > Mic 6

- price
Mic 6 >> 7075 > 6061

To determine the aesthetic appeal of different materials, all 3 materials went through the same process of machining, sandblasting and hard anodizing (35 micron). The major differences in the final products are the color and surface smoothness.

Taking aesthetic appeal, price and strength into consideration, 7075 will be used in the next groupbuy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improvements
- Gap

It is much more appealing than round 1. Although no one has made a complain about the gap, but it does bother me a lot.

- Brass finishing

mirror finish

normal buffing

electro nickel plating

The brass for CE will be electro nickel plated. I have not decided on what kind surface to go for thought (sandblast or mirror polish)

- wrapping issue

As you can see form the photos, the top part lies flatly even though it is not screwed to the bottom case.

- Anodize color variation

As much as I want a perfect anodize for CE, unfortunately it is not possible. What I can do is only to minimize the color variation.

mic 6 sample. To give you an idea, the above variation in color is not acceptable.

this is something i learnt from the OTD board. The mounting point of the plate. The plated is mounted at an very small angle, to reduce the contract surface with the case for maximum "thock"

I second this sentiment.
If not I'm still interested in cherry board. I would also like to know what's your timeline on with the current Jane GB and how it will interact with this buy?

the current groupbuy had all been delivered.

but Yong is finishing his work by week too.

my plan is to have the second round shipped out 2 week before Christmas.

I might have to get in on this. What slant will the case have? Will colours/price be the same as V1? Will we have the same plate options?
Title: Re: [IC]TGR-Jane CE

Damn! Nice! I don't have my board yet, but I hope I don't want this one too much!

Kinda bummed I didn't just wait. Didn't realize the improved version would arrive so fast. Ah, well. At least others can enjoy the board sooner.

yuktsi, do you know if the acrylic layer will be offered this time around? That would probably be the only thing that would make me join Round 2.

That's something that I will need to talk to the factory tmr. Hopefully 20 or 25 would be great.

With the exchange rate of myr vs usd, I'm hoping the price will be the same as the previous run, but using a better material and harder anodize. I want the brass weight to be sent for surface treatment too.

Let's just hope for the best.

Sounds great, will there be more anondization color options? I've always loved sky blue but just may need to grab a titanium one if not.

Just to clarify the price will be similar to the previous group buy which was $420 for the kit(case, pcb, plate). See a lot of new members expressing interest, I don't think that many new members are expecting such a high cost.

Doesn't matter the cost for me, I'm excited for Jane r2. Now I just need to get my r1 in the mail.
Yours will be out next Monday. For sure.

Thanks, can't wait to build it! :thumb:
$700???

Ended up buying the kit, vintage browns, mx lock, blue and white LEDs, sip sockets, gateron clear tops, diodes, and resistors. Just added it up now, ended up being $669.02 for the board and parts w/o keyset. Ended up being $776.72 including my GMK TA set that I'm planning on putting on it.

Shipping and assembly (if you opted for assembly in Malaysia) was $120, and I'm putting Zealios in mine, so that was an extra $66. Total cost for me was just over $600.

A Jane numpad would definitely be awesome, I don't think there would be enough time for it to be in this group buy if expected delivery date is two weeks before Christmas. If so, I hope that there will be one in the future. :thumb:

More questions: What color options are available for the plate (if any, trying to go for something similar to corsa), and is there offcenter spacebar support?
I think I will just stick with red.
do you mean off center for 6.25x spacebar?

Yes, I meant off center for 6.25x.

Any reason why you need an extra PCB and plate?  :blank:

As for numpad, I already have the case designed long time ago. Some people may have seen it (before Jane).
But now I feel that the numpad should use my own pcb, so it may still take awhile.

I will probably go for blue grey, although perhaps olive green.

If possible I'd like to be able to purchase more than one plate and PCB. One ISO and one ANSI.

I dunno. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Also, please work on that numpad!

Edit:
So glad titanium isn't offered this time. Makes me love my r1 even more! Got that Model M industrial look, except more gray.

Oops silly me, I meant to say to mx 11800, I was just checking out an 8100 on ebay and wasn't thinking when I was typing :p.
Still not vintage :( Marginally better than modern browns. I call them old browns.

Got confirmation back that they are indeed true vintage browns harvested from a g80-11801, the person whom I bought them off of also double checked the literal model number on the label. Placement of the logo and springs match up with vintage browns as well. They definitely feel different compared to the few new brown switches I have.

Yuktsi, I remembering you mentioning that there would be something in store for Jane r1 users. Are you still planning on this or changed your mind?

Yeah, those will be "old" browns. A bit nicer than modern ones. "Vintage" browns, which are nicer again, are only found in G80-5000 and G80-1838.

It's only on the inside of the case, it won't be visible. That's how it aas for r1 and that's what yuktsi's current pictures indicate as well.

So the main differences in obvious appearance are the notched bottom case and the hidden brass plate. While I much prefer the notched bottom half, I'm so happy to have my r1 Jane because of the color I've chosen.

The reason it can hit 700, is because you buy your own switches and diodes. Some people went out of their way to get a cap set specifically for it as well.

It's going to be around $420 for the kit(case, pcb, plate) which was the price of round 1. The $700 price you saw is what I paid overall for all the parts and the kit to build myself, including shipping. I went all out on my board trying to assure that it can be the best it can get, you wouldn't have to spend as much but it will still be well over $500.

Hey yuktsi,

I know you said you were planning on keeping the run size on this fairly low. I completely understand that, love the exclusivity value and hate waiting through a month of orders on most GBs.

What I'm wondering is how open you would be to extending the run size depending on interest in this board.

If this can be delivered by Christmas you would be my own personal Jesus Christ. I really don't want to miss out.

I'm in. For sure!

Also, if that pink comes back, I might be in for two... One for my better half, of course :)

(in the interest of full disclosure, got that idea from somewhere in the building stuff together sub, not sure who and I'm on my mobile right now, so I'm too lazy to look it up...)
filphil?
Very possibly.

Filphil an yuktsi were the only ones to order pink and I'm pretty sure yuktsi never posted pics of his, filphil did post a very nice and well detailed build log of his.

Then probably filphil. He polished the brass insert and put some black paint in it to really make the engraving pop.

Yeap that's him. His brass plate looks gorgeous, it's a shame it won't be visible.

If so from 1 to 25?

Since olive green color is hard to capture, can we have an idea of how it really looks like ? pick here (https://www.google.fr/search?q=olive+green+anodised&espv=2&biw=1360&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMI2JSel5f6yAIVhlsaCh3-YgwF&gws_rd=cr&ei=_8M7Vt3iFYW7afnvsNgH)

Would there be any changes to the anodizing process to minimize these effects?

This is true, and it's still an issue that will at least be reduced, as mentioned in the OP.

- Anodize color variation

As much as I want a perfect anodize for CE, unfortunately it is not possible. What I can do is only to minimize the color variation.

mic 6 sample. To give you an idea, the above variation in color is not acceptable.

There definitely seems like there is a lot more interest compared to last time. I still don't believe that all the people sharing there interest recognize the cost of the board so once the GB starts there probably won't be as many people but still sell out rather fast.

I think that's normal with 2 pieces board. I have some OTD board such as 360c , 356mini  , and i see that the top and bottom pieces always different , some have a huge difference , some just a little bit. However , There are still some colors which very hard to see the difference between 2 pieces i.e silver color.

BTW, anyone who have the Blue Grey r1 please post your keyboard T_T

For anyone interested in joining the group buy:
Yuktsi has kept up wth communication well.  When it came to meeting his deadlines it was among the top guns on geekhack and he responded well to criticisms regarding packaging(Joey Quinn, 2015).  It seems like there will be more group buys to come and provided that his enthusiasm and dedication to a quality product remains I'll be up to support him with my cash any day.

It looks like this latest pic has a sandblasted finish. I'm going to assume this is a step toward a better anodized finish?

There is one thing I'd like to suggest to yuktsi for those bothered by differing halves from anodizing like my own Jane(tbh the pics make it look harsh). How about selecting a different color for the top and bottom halves?  I think it would have liked weird on the R1 but the CE looks like it would look great with a silver bottom. The recent lz-cp and orion v2 buys indicate that this is a viable and popular option.  My very own orion v2 is blue-gray/silver.

I'm assuming this wouldn't add any extra cost as the two parts are manufactured separately anyway. It sounds like a good option - esp what you said about the silver bottoms.

I was thinking if I joined this of starting a tops/bottoms trade spreadsheet. But that would be over complicated compared to just taking separate orders for tops/bottom colors. If Yuktsi is willing to do it I think it could look really cool.

The silver color are removed so I think maybe the top & bottom parts getting different color wont be possible.

Why wouldn't it be possible just because silver isn't a color option? You cold mix and match any of them if you wanted, plus black is also a good bottom color as well.

I suppose the controllers will be pre-soldered.
The rest, meaning the diodes, switches, leds, resistors, and rgb leds will require soldering either by yourself, or pay an assembly fee for YongJK or other people with the tools and time to do it for you.

Apparently yuktsi is going through a bit of a personal rough patch this week. It sounded like the GB may be delayed a bit, if it's not happening today.

Yeap, a few of us have been in contact a little with him. We'll just have to give him a little bit of time to deal with some problems he may be going through.

price will be approximately the same as the previous buy, $420. though i wouldn't worry about the price if i were you, the 25 units available will be snapped up within mere hours

When you say not to worry about the price, do you mean that it will potentially decrease if there are more orders?  Pardon my ignorance--still quite new to GH!  :)

He's implying that you may not have to worry about paying for it because you may not get a spot due to how quickly r1 sold out. R2 will probably sell out just as fast.

I'd monitor yuktsi's posts heavily once he's ready to start the GB.

i meant that, due to the limited quantity, people will run each other over for a spot in the buy. i.e. availability and not price should be what you're concerned about.

btw the price for keyboard GBs are always fixed

It all depends if a mod is active at the time or not. It really is random just waiting for one of them to approve it.

The color options are so difficult to choose from. The olive green is really nice, especially since they are no other boards with similar color but I'm having difficulty thinking of a good keyset to pair with it. I really like blue grey as well but that's what my r1 is. Looks like I'll probably go with black, kind of reminds me of a modern day 456gt.

You're right, I feel like a good desko set as well would look pretty good. I thought the group buy would've been up by now especially since Hoff just approved the Troubled Minds GB page so he had to of been looking through GB's waiting for approval. I don't how if that's exactly how the system works though.

Can't go wrong with classic beige, that set goes well with any kind of color. Skidata+ and hyperfuse would match tho.

I wish there was like a silver option.

Black I just like any other board so then I don't want that (maybe I do.)

So I guess I'm either blue or pink

Problem is I'd have to think of what Keydets would go with it

There wasn't as many color options this time around because of the different metal(aluminum 7075), yuktsi was telling me the shop he is going to said it's impossible to anodize 7075 with titanium grey, I'm assuming the same goes for the other colors that are missing.

I was thinking black with Skidata+ would look amazing, or could always do Red Alert. CCnG was one that I was thinking for green but I'm not too big of a fan of green in general.

Still not vintage :( Marginally better than modern browns. I call them old browns.
