Title: New Pok3r Backlit
Post by: droshi on Sat, 21 November 2015, 19:59:26
Has anyone gotten one yet?

I'm seeing it here, looks available:
http://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-coating-Keycaps-Mx-Clear/dp/B014T4PK0M/

Trying to decide if it's worth it over the regular pok3r with stock PBT caps.

ABS dual coating means just regular ABS caps with a coating over them right? Or is it real-double shot caps?

Wow, that's pricey.  I'm currently in the process of LED modding my POK3R and so far I've got a few LED's installed and working  :thumb:  Personally, I LOVE the stock keycaps on the regular POK3R.  The sound and feels are wonderful!

$130 vs 150 didn't sound like much of a price bump, I'm comparing both versions with MX clears, maybe other switches are a little cheaper?

For me, the link showed Amazon.ca for $220CAD + shipping.  It must have changed from my Canadian IP

Any issues with buzzing on an LED mod? I've heard a couple of reports of buzzing at full brightness.

If you have to buy gear for a self-install it seems like buying backlit is worth it. I agree with cryptokey though. I really like the stock pbt caps on my white pok3r.

The stock poker keycaps are really not bad - the ones on the backlit model look pretty awful though

If I adjust the brightness too much, then the lights go off and the red led under the spacebar goes on.  No buzzing.  I then just turn down the lighting and wait a bit or unplug/plug it back in. I'm using the most recent firmware.  Perhaps updating would solve that issue for some people.

Yeah I personally really enjoy the feel and sound of stock pok3r caps - minus how easily they get dirty.

The backlit ones? Judging by the pictures or has anyone yet seen them in person? In Pictures a lot of backlit boards I could see look bad. But I bet it's more to do with lighting and camera than the board.

Really? For $20 you can install LEDs on the old Pok3r and new keycaps? Of course discounting time and errors.

I can't decide which I'd like to get, but it seems most people are voicing odd concerns to justify the old Pok3r.

I thought it would be really more a debate of laser engraved PBT vs how good the new ABS caps are. According to here they are doubleshot:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1418

I've seen a lot of reports that the original stock PBT cap legends fade very quickly, so I'm guessing neither are perfect.

I've seen some good custom caps in other threads, but could never figure out, is anyone producing custom caps specifically for the Pok3r with the Fn layer printed as well?

A pok3r should be around $110 if you look around, and LEDs cost like maaaybe $5. There shouldn't be any errors installing  LEDs, it's literally so easy.

I know there have been a lot of delays with the LED version of the Pok3r. Has anyone seen a working version?

The video they posted on their Facebook page shows multi-color LEDs cycling through, but what I'm seeing on MK.com is just white.

From what I've heard the first run is white LED, next run will be blue or some other solid color, 3rd run will be the multi-color they showed on their facebook page.

It looks like the white LED version is just coming out, and I guess not many people have ordered or gotten theirs yet. So as a guess it's probably a while before the multi-colored ones come out.

They also announced development of a Poker 4 that splits in half, but I guess that's probably even further from coming out.

In the updated Pok3r manual, it shows RGB controls so it's definitely compatible with rgb lighting

Just getting back into the swing of all things keyboards, so pardon my newbie question...

Any idea what LEDs are going to be used in the RGB version? Is this the four pin LEDs, or something different?

I can't believe it took so long for them to put out the backlit version. Here I was thinking an RGB version would be out by now..

I heard they had some issues with the firmware. I don't know it's related to RGB or not, but that's why I opted to hold out until the backlit versions shipped.

Although there are 4-pin ones, 2-pin RGB LEDs exist as well.  Queue 2-pin RGB LED Dubstep video

holy jesus... are you telling me my recent order of 100 white leds was a mistake? :(
just kidding. i think rgb is excessively flashy anyway. i like the simplicity of white leds. do you know if it's possible to swap out the stock red/blue leds with white ones? even though i won't get the same indicators, i don't mind. i just want uniformity  ;D

I think I'm about set to go with the non-backlit Pok3r. Although some conflicting pictures, most seem to indicate that the backlit version won't have the Fn layer legends on the sides of the keys. This would be my first 60% board, so I'm pretty sure I'll need that to get used to things. For me, the backlighting was just an occasional thing in a dim lit room, and mostly I envisioned using it as a reference to the Fn layer. So overall I think it would be relatively useless for me.

Now to just decide white vs black. Normally I'd go with black to match pretty much everything else, but the Pok3r black keys seem a bit more charcoal, and the white looks pretty nice. Other than initial looks, is there any problems with white yellowing over time on these boards? Or pretty much a non-issue these days?

it's painted aluminum so you should be good re yellowing

Thanks, was thinking about the caps, but realized they are PBT, and shouldn't have issues either.

Still if anyone gets a backlit pok3r, please post here. I knew it was released not that long ago, but thought someone would have had one on here by now.

And that probably explains the delay. I have a few RGB LEDs I got from Sprit and in my testing they simply cycle through all the colors. I would imagine that the PCB has to allow for changes in voltage to distinguish specific colors, maybe?

Curious to see what the finished product looks like, but I'm going to wait until the RGB are available.

So I got the new backlit pok3r. My initial review is the new backlit version is better than the pok3r when they initially came out. The pbt keycaps that came with the nonbacklit version fade really quick and aren't as good as the pbt keycaps that come with the poker 2. Secondly, it seems that the pok3r with backlit come with a new aluminum case. The case is painted better, the texture, and the case is redesigned and doesn't have the plastic tray anymore when the pok3rs first came out.

By now, I've already installed LED's in my pok3r and updated the firmware with no issues.  The only thing I had trouble with was one LED that was completely related to my noob soldering skills.

Yeah, good idea.  Once the firmware update is available when the RGB version comes out, then it'll probably be safe to upgrade and install RGB.

Hello,

I managed to put temporarily one LED and it worked fine.
I played also with the caps lock Led, this one seems to be a dual led color like under the space bar.
So is it possible to change the color of this light ? I tried FN + Q but ...nothing.
