Title: Who has the best ergodox keycaps, and how did you get them???
Post by: sosurim on Wed, 25 November 2015, 04:45:11
Hello all,

My apologies since this question has been asked many times before, but I'm really having a tough time on how to get a decent set of keycaps for an ergodox that'll arrive any day now. After hours of googling, my options seem to be:

1) Buy a simple ergodox set of keycaps (PBT/DCS) from signature plastics for about $50,

2) buy a more generic pack (also PBT/DCS) from a south korean ebayer ($39 + 13 shipping).

3) Get a set of Rosewill 104 doubleshot keys from amazon

4) Buy a used vortex poker from craigslist (someone's selling one for $50 in my area) and cannibalize the keycaps

Can anyone advise me as to which option will be the cheapest, fastest and best quality method?

thanks.

BTW: anyone know where and how I can get the coffee/green/orange combo keycaps shown in this thread? I love the color combo:

The "coffee / green / orange" caps are from the Retro SA keycaps Group Buy: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=71636.0

The buy is complete, though, so the only to get them is through posting a request in that thread or in Classifieds, but you need more posts to be able to post in Classifieds first.

The ErgoDox uses a lot of 1.5u caps (12) and 2u caps (4) and no "normal" sets (like the Poker and Rosewill sets) will have all those keys. So if you want to fill the board properly you'll need a set of keycaps with an ErgoDox "kit" or a dedicated set of ErgoDox caps.

For just the 1u caps you can use caps from any Cherry MX compatible keycaps set.

What I'd probably do is get a base Modern Selectric set and fill out the extra keys with blank packs. IMHO, SA profile is much nicer than DSA.

Thanks for that!

When I sent signature plastics an RFQ with that picture, they quoted me $750, and for just one color. For the other colors, it would be another $750 each. So $2250 for them keycaps. Yikes!!

I'll try requesting on the thread. Thanks again.

Wow, I didn't know that the ErgoDox used so many oddly sized caps.  It also looks like the Troubled Minds SA keyset isn't going to hit MOQ for it's ErgoDox child deal so that isn't really an option either.

Keycaps should be comfortable to use in the first place, if you ask me. Sooo, there goes my ErgoDox (http://deskthority.net/photos-f62/post-your-keyboard-keycaps-t7834-510.html#p233196)…
