GROUPBUY IS LIVE
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=77618 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=77618)
Geekhack was rolled back a bit after being down, it is back though!
I will be running a little groupbuy for Z-cases made by Ziptyze. The cases are 3-D printed, but are quite good quality (not nasty flaky plastic like many 3-D printed things). The cases will be available in opaque, clear translucent, and colored translucent.
The pricing will look like this (these are estimates on the high side, I am looking for ways to lower them):
Opaque: $40
Premium Opaque (just some colors are harder to get and considered premium): $50
Uncolored (white) trans: $40
Colored trans: $50
Glow in the Dark: $60
Colored trans will depend on interest, but possible colors include: These colors are all available now, they will be produced as long as there is at least one order.
Violet, Green, Red, Blue, and Orange
Colored Opaque will be available in any basic color you can imagine! A full catalogue of available colors will be put together by at least the time the groupbuy starts.
Shipping:
CONUS shipping: $0
EU: $6 + $3 per additional case (Woohoo, thank Leandren for the proxy!)
Int: I will estimate this soon!
Estimated lead time is about 2-3 weeks from the end of taking orders if the orders stay below 50, if they go above I will have to get a new estimate on time from Ziptyze.
These cases are extremely good looking in trans with underlighting on keyboards, and would compliment the wkl boards from the latest Leandren groupbuy very nicely.
Testimony from Leandren :thumb:
The cases can be compared to wood in terms of the weight, there is almost no flexibility when purposely bending it. It feels sturdy and I am not able to bend it permanently. The texture is more matte than I thought. Not glossy. Feels more sturdy than all the plastic cases I have used before. Definetily a great product that exceeded my expectations by A LOT.
Fantastic product for the price
Also here are some sample pictures, I have more pictures coming soon:
Trans white with blue-ish underlighting

Opaque Orange courtesy of Leandren
You can see here the good quality of the cases, with nice texture without being flaky or icky low-quality plastic.

I could be interested, if the case would be here around the same time as LeandreNs stuff (or my alibaba case doesn't get sent in time).

It will, probably match perfectly with my GB. Or before.
-
GB will ship for US ou Europe? Because Leandren's gb is european.
-
Are there any pics of the trans with the lighting off?

Sorry shipping was deleted during rollback and I did not re-add it by accident. I will update with shipping prices in op. Leandren will be proxying, which will reduce euro shipping prices.
Are there any pics of the trans with the lighting off?
Zip is printing more cases to take better pictures of and we will add more soon.
-
So pricing is a bit rough at the moment, because the prices that ziptyze gave me included CONUS shipping directly from him. I noted it in the op, and I will have updated exact prices soon.
-
I'm also interested in seeing what the trans case looks like without the lighting. The case looks great with it!
-
Ooo violet sounds beautiful... I'm interested! :)

Yeah, I'm very interested to know how the violet trans case will look like.

Updated with new Euro shipping price, lower than expected!
-
Great news! Now Europe users can finally buy something without having it cost twice of the product itself. No VAT, 6$ shipping.

Awesome news for the EU! I love seeing my cases travel the globe! On another note... I guess I'm going to have to start posting over here more, eh?

Wow, hey dude. I think Trenza is also going to update /r/mechmarket and /r/mechanicalkeyboards. If he doesn't, i will :D Maybe Deskthority also, as they have a lot of Europe users.
Need to get the info everywhere!

For serious though, before the rollback there were some people asking questions about your process that I couldn't answer. If they come back it'll be great to have you here.

I second this. If we have a master of 3D printing available, we better use him!

I'll try to keep an eye on things as much as possible! Always good to add one more tab that's always open in my browser!

I currently have 34 tabs open in Chrome. I might have a problem...

Seems legit.

I would be down for a case!
-
I'd definitely grab a trans orange
-
I'm interested. Not sure on the color yet. It would be helpful to have color samples for the GB, but I'm definitely in for one.
-
If someone wanted to go with a more smooth finish, how do you think these would handle a sanding, then using acetone for a more glossy finish?

I print in PLA at the moment (my attempts at printing in ABS have not gone as well as I'd like). PLA isn't as sandable, and it won't smooth with acetone. I have tried a couple of different things over time to post-process, but haven't had a lot of luck with anything yet. Hopefully I can get ABS to work eventually, but there are a lot more color options with PLA since it's more popular and easier to work with.

Thank you for noting this, I should clarify for everyone, we will have a color catalogue available for at least the opaque colors by the time of the groupbuy. We may not be able to do samples for the trans colors, but we'll see.
Also, I hope to start the GB on Saturday or Sunday.

I'll be getting it together tonight, but I'm just a little too distracted at work to get it together

interested in trans cases :thumb:
stupid question: are you already using the highest "resolution" with the 3D printer?

No, if I did that they'd take about two days or more to print. Print time increases or decreases exponentially with the resolution. I aim for 6-7 hours per print, otherwise I'd need to charge considerably more.

Oh! didnt expect that. I might even be interested in paying a few bucks more for it being finer, but thats all nice in theory, does it even get considerably different? i guess you did try it at least once? :D

I normally print at .6mm extrusion width, and .3mm layer height. With my printer I can go as low as .25mm width and .05mm layer height. If I did the latter, the prints would actually be closer to 5-6 days now that I do the math, and longer print times also greatly increase the chance of failure. Even small things take a very long time at that resolution. Originally I did the cases at .4mm width, but they still took about 14 hours, which means I couldn't do more than one a day. The difference is definitely noticeable, but it doesn't really affect the overall look because the main area you'd see the difference in resolution is covered up by the keyboard when it's installed. If I ever got to the point that people were buying enough cases for me to buy a couple more machines, then I would definitely consider higher resolutions on a regular basis, but it's just not practical now. I'd have to charge more than tex cases, and that would probably destroy most of my target market.
-
thanks for explaining :thumb: that definitely makes sense :D
-
Wow. I think I am going to get either a trans. case or an opaque one. Does anyone have any pics of the opaque one? I'm trying to see if it will look good with my backlit poker 2

Opaque comes in whatever color you want basically. Search around on reddit for some pics (people have posted quite a few), or check out the pictures on 1upkeyboards. I need to get more of my own pictures...

The orange on up there is also a good example of opaque...

Ok I made an image for people to reference for colors. If you don't see a specific color that you had in mind, let me know and I'll see if it's something that I can order or get from somewhere else.

Ooops! I didn't realize I left that picture off of there! Well, it's definitely an option! Turning into my most popular "color"
-
Yeah, Dutch Orange, that is my favourite! I might need a more stealthy looking case for my other build, trying to figure out which color i should go with...
-
Oh man, that GiD option...
-
Yeah, Dutch Orange, that is my favourite! I might need a more stealthy looking case for my other build, trying to figure out which color i should go with...
Camouflage stealthy??? That olive green I found would fit that. I wish I would have found that a few weeks ago, there was a case I printed for someone that would have been perfect for that. All of those "premium" colors are the colorfabb ones, personally I really like the lilac. I need to do a snozzberry planck build with that.

More like grey/black/brown stealthy :) I just need to find a keyset that will match. As an ISO user, the keysets aren't THAT easy to come by.

I wish I could find a brown somewhere in between the dark brown and the light brown. The dark is pretty dark, and that light looks very light. I want something closer to the 76 brown

Yeah, i would have used 76 with the brown case. I like the dark silver one.

I have recently started to use ISO, and I don't quite understand this frustration. I have had quite an easy time finding keysets. In fact, OG cherry sets are much easier to find in ISO than ANSI.

Its not only ISO itself, its also the specific language for each country using ISO layouts. Not everyone wants blanks (i cant even type without letters on them :( ) and then it becomes more of a problem. Also do you mean new cherry sets or used ones?
-
Yeah sorry, i miswrote that. ISO sets are super easy to get new these days. All PMK buys, Vortex ISO PBT oldschool keyboards etc. However, they are hard to find on mechmarket and such because of all the ANSI users. I thought it would be easier to find a keyset for my JD40, apparently not. having a hard time finding a blue JD40 combatible set!

Is the thicker front lip part of the design or a requirement for the printing or something?
-
Is the thicker front lip part of the design or a requirement for the printing or something?
Not a requirement... Just sometimes I like my cases flush with the plate, sometimes flush with the bottom of the caps. If I make them in dual colors though it is a requirement simply to allow space for the threaded inserts and screws though

Just to clarify though, all cases for this groupbuy will be uniform height.

Yup. Even with plate

Looks like 1UpKeyboards has some Z-Cases for sale already and they have some color samples as well. More here (http://1upkeyboards.com/index.php?cPath=35).

Pretty interested in one of these. Hopefully I'll have some funds available.

lilac :) interested

Oh groupbuy is up by the way
taking orders until next saturday

What are most people doing to raise the angle of these keyboards? They don't look to be compatible with the usual aluminum feet that other acrylic cases are.

I have feet that can come in whatever other color you want, to add some color. If those other feet are standard, I could probably adapt it to use them as well, but I'd need to get some

I thought this style of feet was standard on non-angled and/or low profile 60% cases. See: TEX, GON (similar style, not sure if he has the same mounting style), and the chinese acrylic case that I have.

I guess it would be the same as a larger rubber bumper but these look a lot nicer. What do your feet look like? (no pics of real feet pls)

Since I created my cases from scratch taking measurements off of the PCB for the screw, dipswitch, and USB locations, I wasn't really conforming to a standard, other than the fact that those are supposed to be in basically the same place on all 60%'s. If someone can give me reasonably accurate dimensions on the holes and locations, I can easily incorporate them into the design!
